SUMMARY:Digital Collection Development
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Michelle Luhtala\, Library Department Chair\, New Canaan High School\, CT; and Mesa Heise\, Director of Digital Services\, Mackin Educational Resources \nSponsored by Mackin Educational Resources \nWatch the Recording\nGet a CE Certificate for this edWebinar Learn more \nPurchasing digital educational content is tricky business. The big trade publishers can change licensing agreements in ways that impact schools because K-12 is not their priority market. Textbook publishing\, which seemed simple and profitable in the print format is far more complex for eTexts. The term “eBook” calls to mind an alphabet soup of delivery formats (EPUB\, MOBI\, AZW\, IBA\, PDF\, and more). Purchasing as we have traditionally known it is replaced by a wide array of “leasing” models where a dropped contract can result in collection depletion. Managing a digital collection requires attention to detail. The screen reading vs. print reading debate rages on. \nIn the meantime\, software developers scramble to innovate e-reading for education with varying degrees of success. A decade ago\, the eBook market was labeled as the wild west of publishing\, and while much has changed\, volatility has not. In this edWebinar\, watch Michelle Luhtala\, Library Department Chair at New Canaan High School in Connecticut\, and Mesa Heise\, Director of Digital Services at Mackin Educational Resources\, for a discussion about effective digital collection development in K-12 schools. \nThis recorded presentation will be of interest to K-12 librarians\, teachers\, and administrators. \nAbout the Presenters \nMichelle Luhtala is the Library Department Chair at New Canaan High School in Connecticut and was one of five school librarians named as a “Mover and Shaker” by Library Journal in 2015. Follow her on Twitter @mluhtala. \n  \nMesa Heise\, Mackin’s Director of Digital Services\, brings a wealth of experience to the company and the customers it serves. Her expert infusion into this family-owned business is evidenced by the deep knowledge and dedicated passion she shares every day with school administrators\, librarians\, media specialists and teachers. An experienced and vivacious presence\, Mesa serves as Mackin’s chief public speaker. Throughout the year\, she travels the country\, attending national and local conferences\, educating the public on the virtues of Mackin and their multiple award-winning\, free digital resource management system\, MackinVIA. Her contributions to Mackin go beyond public education. Mesa has been instrumental in the design of the user interface and functionality of MackinVIA and the eBook reader. It is through her persistent efforts and tireless energy that Mackin has remained at the forefront of the print and digital realm within PK- 12 education. \nJoin the Emerging Tech for Schools and Libraries community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming edWebinars\, and view recordings of previous programs to earn CE certificates. \n\n Mackin is one of the top providers of library and classroom materials for grades PK-12. SUMMARY:Preschool Beyond Walls: Integrating Nature into the Preschool Classroom
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Rachel A. Larimore\, Owner\, Samara Early Learning\, LLC\nSponsored by Gryphon House \nWatch the Recording\nGet a CE Certificate for this edWebinar Learn more \nWith a growing awareness of the benefits of outdoor play\, it seems everywhere one turns there is talk of children and nature. One particular approach that is receiving a lot of attention is nature-based or forest preschools. While the number of nature-based preschools is increasing\, there are more young children needing experiences with nature than these programs can provide. At the same time\, many early childhood educators who understand the value of outdoor experiences find themselves in a traditional setting unsure of how to meaningfully integrate nature into their programs. \nThis recorded edWebinar will help early childhood providers\, no matter their situation\, consider the principles fundamental to a nature-based approach and integrate those principles into teaching practice. These high-quality nature-based early childhood education (NbECE) practices don’t happen overnight\, but rather occur through daily programmatic and teaching decisions. Using a continuum of NbECE as the overarching framework\, Rachel Larimore provides concrete ways to better integrate nature into your program structure\, physical environment (inside and outside)\, and teacher-child interactions. \nViewers will leave the edWebinar with tangible ideas that can be implemented the next day as well as some ideas can be worked toward into the future. This recorded presentation will be of interest to preK-3 teachers\, librarians\, and school and district leaders. \nAbout the Presenter \nRachel is the founder of Samara Early Learning\, a consulting business focused on supporting early childhood professionals in implementing nature-based administrative and pedagogical practices. Prior to this\, she worked for 15 years as the director of education at Chippewa Nature Center (CNC) in Midland\, MI. In 2007\, in this role\, she developed the Nature Preschool at CNC and implemented the on-the-ground work to bring it to reality. She continued as the founding director of the program until 2016 when\, at her departure\, the program served 140 children each year through public and private funding sources. Rachel is also pursuing a PhD in curriculum\, instruction\, and teacher education at Michigan State University. Rachel is the author of Establishing a Nature-Based Preschool\, focused on program administration\, and Preschool Beyond Walls: Blending Early Learning Childhood Education and Nature-Based Learning\, which focuses on integrating nature-based practices into the preschool classroom. \n \nJoin the Early Learning Book Chats community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming edWebinars\, and view recordings of previous programs to earn CE certificates. \n\n\nGryphon House\, Inc. is an award-winning publisher of early childhood resources for teachers and parents.

SUMMARY:Supporting Preschoolers’ Social and Emotional Development Through Music and Movement Activities
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dr. Lili M. Levinowitz\, Director of Research\, Music Together Worldwide\, and Professor Emeritus\, Rowan University\nSponsored by Music Together \nWatch the Recording\nGet a CE Certificate for this edWebinar Learn more \nHealthy social-emotional skills in early childhood can have a profound impact on a child’s overall development and learning. In fact\, many early childhood experts see positive social skills as the most important factor for school readiness and later school success. Developmentally appropriate\, participatory\, group and dyad music and movement activities have special characteristics that not only support young children as they develop socially and emotionally but also support group cohesion in the classroom. \nIn this edWebinar\, Dr. Lili M. Levinowitz introduces participants to the important dimensions of social and emotional development and demonstrate fun and accessible songs and other music activities that support a range of social and emotional skills\, including self-regulation\, self-confidence\, leadership\, social competence\, and emotional intelligence. You’ll leave this edWebinar with a deeper understanding of the ways in which music can naturally support children’s social and emotional development in the preschool years! \nThis recorded presentation will be of interest to educators working with toddlers\, preschoolers\, and kindergartners.\n  \nAbout the Presenter \nLili M. Levinowitz\, Ph.D. is Professor Emeritus of Music Education at Rowan University. She is the coauthor of the early childhood music and movement program\, Music Together\, and Director of Research for Music Together Worldwide. Dr. Levinowitz is considered a national authority on early childhood music and is actively involved in teaching very young children as well as graduate students. Her articles appear frequently in professional journals and popular magazines. She received her M.M. and Ph.D. from Temple University\, and her B.M. from Westminster Choir College. \nJoin the Music in Early Learning community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming edWebinars\, and view recordings of previous programs to earn CE certificates. \n\n At Music Together\, we understand the importance of music in early childhood—from birth\, in fact. Because the truth is\, most people are born with enough music aptitude to play in a symphony orchestra when they are adults\, if they choose. But first we must learn how to “speak music”—to take the musical instrument we all have\, ourselves\, developing that musical capacity from a very young age. The sounds we make\, our movements\, our rhythms—these are the building blocks of music and of early childhood learning. And that’s what Music Together is all about.
