SUMMARY:From Home to Classroom: Using Home Language to Strengthen Literacy Instruction
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Allison Bucklew\, Former Teacher\, Current Program Design Director\, UnboundEd; and Dr. Brandi Johnson Kent\, Early and Adolescent Literacy Instruction Expert & Consultant\, UnboundEd\nModerated by Clay Willis\, Vice President of Marketing and Communications\, UnboundEd \nSponsored by UnboundEd \nWatch the Recording\nLearn more about earning a CE certificate and our accessibility features. \nStudents develop complex language systems long before they enter school. Research in sociolinguistics and the science of reading shows that literacy instruction strengthens word recognition and language comprehension when it builds on home language instead of ignoring or replacing it. These intentional home-to-classroom connections foster the linguistic flexibility students need to navigate academic texts in a variety of contexts. \nThis edWebinar explores one powerful\, research-backed strategy for strengthening literacy outcomes: building authentic literacy partnerships with families. In these authentic partnerships\, teachers can intentionally create connections between home dialects and classroom instruction. \nRather than positioning families as helpers or volunteers\, this session reframes families as linguistic experts whose knowledge can inform and strengthen reading and writing development. Participants examine how structured partnerships between home and school can support metalinguistic awareness\, dialect shifting\, and academic language development. \nIn this session\, you explore: \n\nWhat research in linguistic flexibility and the science of reading reveals about literacy success\nHow to intentionally connect classroom literacy instruction to the linguistic assets students already develop at home\nA replicable strategy for connecting family language knowledge directly to reading and writing instruction\nExamples of how this strategy builds metalinguistic awareness and dialect-shifting\nWhat it takes to shift from correction-based approaches to bridge-building instruction\n\nParticipants leave with a clear strategy for moving language from home to the classroom so students expand their language repertoire without losing their voice. \nThis session is for leaders who want to build an asset-based literacy strategy that includes explicit instruction in linguistic flexibility. It is grounded in research and the science of reading\, and it previews a strategy that connects home language and classroom instruction. \n \n \nAbout the Presenters \nAllison Bucklew has 15 years of experience in math education and instructional leadership. She has taught at the elementary\, middle\, and high school levels\, and served in various instructional leadership roles\, most recently as the Director of Data and Assessment at Crossroads Charter Schools in Kansas City\, Missouri. As an educational consultant\, she supports school leaders through data-driven\, strategic feedback aligned to district literacy goals and provides teachers with targeted\, literacy-focused professional development and coaching. As an adjunct professor at the USC Rossier School of Education\, she designs and facilitates graduate-level coursework in curriculum design and pedagogy\, emphasizing culturally responsive teaching\, Universal Design for Learning (UDL)\, and reflective practice. \n \nAbout the Moderator \nClay Willis is a mission- and results-driven marketing and communications leader committed to making education work for every single learner. SUMMARY:A Math Education Game Changer: Assessing What Really Counts
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Jay McTighe\, Author and Consultant\, McTighe and Associates Consulting; and Jay Meadows\, Experienced Educator\, Current CEO\, Exemplars \nSponsored by Exemplars \nWatch the Recording\nLearn more about earning a CE certificate and our accessibility features. \nFeaturing special guest speaker Jay McTighe. \nWhat does high-quality student work look like in today’s math classroom? The recent versions of mathematics standards (e.g.\, NCTM\, CCSS\, TEKS) emphasize the development of mathematical reasoning\, problem-solving strategies\, and associated habits of mind (e.g.\, precision\, perseverance) along with computational accuracy. In addition\, many schools and districts have adopted a Portrait of a Graduate that identifies cross-disciplinary competencies that are valued in the modern world (e.g.\, creativity\, ability to work effectively in teams\, responsible citizenship\, communication using various media). Such learning outcomes have significant implications for mathematics instruction as well as for assessment practices. \nIn this edWebinar\, Jay McTighe and Jay Meadows explore what math teaching and assessment should look like in today’s schools for students to achieve these valued outcomes. Jay and Jay make the case for the increased use of authentic math tasks—on both large-scale\, end-of-the-year accountability tests and on classroom assessments—to measure what really matters and promote more engaging and relevant instruction. \nThey investigate the game-changing potential of artificial intelligence (AI) to transform mathematics assessment to enable educators to efficiently and effectively gauge all valued outcomes\, not just those easiest and cheapest to test. They describe TRISTAN\, an AI tool capable of reading students’ handwritten responses to open-ended tasks that ask students to show their thinking\, not simply select an answer from a given set of options. \nIt is now possible to transform the way we teach and assess mathematics towards what really counts! This recorded edWebinar is of interest to K-12 teachers\, school leaders\, and district leaders. \n\n \n \nAbout the Presenters \nJay McTighe is a veteran educator and accomplished author\, having co-written 18 books\, including the award-winning and best-selling Understanding by Design® series with Grant Wiggins. His books have been translated into 14 languages.
