SUMMARY:How STEAM Activities Prepare Students for the Global Economy
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Amy McCooe\, CEO\, Level Up Village; Esra Murray\, Fifth Grade Teacher\, International School at Dundee\, CT; and Fran Kompar\, Director\, Instructional Technology and Digital Learning\, Wilton Public Schools\, CT \nSponsored by Level Up Village \nWatch the Recording\nGet a CE Certificate for this edWebinar Learn more \nThis edWebinar highlights the necessity of global learning now\, provide global collaboration options available today\, and emphasize the benefits of global inclusion in all aspects of the classroom. \nThe growth of emerging and developing economies offers great opportunities but it also requires businesses to take on greater risks and require global communication and collaboration skills from its workforce. Large multinational and international companies are responding to national policy environments and realizing they need to establish local operations and alliances with local firms\, rather than just exporting to a country. They are looking for employees with 21st century global collaboration and communication skills. \nSimultaneously\, today’s young citizens have been raised with a greater awareness of global issues\, such as water scarcity and pollution\, than any other generation. In order to engage this population in STEAM\, and to remain relevant\, the learning must be authentic and fully immersed in the backdrop of the global context. To teach global citizenship\, we must recognize our role in impacting and engaging students in STEAM activities through global inclusion\, equity and diversity so they may reach their full potential in any K-12 classroom. Global project-based learning programs that connect students around the world virtually deliver the importance and immediate impact of global context when teaching STEAM in the classroom. \nThis recorded edWebinar will be of interest to preK-8 teachers\, librarians\, and school and district leaders. \nAbout the Presenters \nAmy McCooe brings a wealth of business experience and her lifelong passion for education to the global STEAM arena. SUMMARY:Using Adaptation and Extension to Bring Sociocultural Connections into Your Classroom
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Professor Alex Monceaux\, Director\, Lamar University Pathway Program\, Lamar University \nSponsored by VIPKid \nWatch the Recording\nGet a CE Certificate for this edWebinar Learn more \nAs educators\, we always work to find unique ways to meet each student’s individual needs. “Adaptation” and “extension” are two of the most reliable tools we have to build personalization into our lessons. However\, as we all know\, education functions best when social and cultural ties are part of the program\, even at the earliest stages of learning. This edWebinar will aim to help teachers think about their students\, their surrounding community\, and how the two can be successfully brought together in the classroom through adaptation and extension. \nWhen considering the social and cultural aspects of learning\, schools\, teachers\, students\, and parents are all critical to the process. But there are also a variety of other entities such as local businesses and regional organizations that are critical too. For example\, local businesses can help teens get ready to enter the workforce and therefore could be engaged as part of the process. When adequately leveraged using adaptation and extension in the classroom\, these entities can enhance learning dramatically. \nJoin us for this edWebinar\, as participants will learn how integrating a child’s sociocultural structures and reinforcing those connections through in-school activities can elevate a student’s overall educational experience. This presentation will be of interest to teachers\, librarians\, and school leaders at all levels. There will be time to get your questions answered at the end of the presentation. \nAbout the Presenter \nDr. Alex Monceaux began teaching K-12 in 1999 and in 2006\, began teaching ESOL students at Lamar University. Since then\, he has offered educators workshops and sessions in South Korea\, Malaysia\, Indonesia\, Thailand\, Spain\, France\, Italy\, UK\, Costa Rica\, and Chile. SUMMARY:Helping Youth Transform Negative Behavioral Patterns
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Lidia Genovese\, Fellow of the Australian Psychological Society\, Counseling\, Educational/Developmental and Clinical Psychologist\nHosted by Ramsey Jay\, Jr.\, Partner\, 21st Century Thinking \nSponsored by 21st Century Thinking \nWatch the Recording\nGet a CE Certificate for this edWebinar Learn more \nAs Dr. Allan Schore put it\, “Kids’ behaviors are simply an expression of their neurological needs.” So\, when young people act out—with violence\, disrespect\, aggression\, withdrawal—in a very real way\, this behavior is how they are managing the discomfort and pain that they feel inside. \nThrough the CABCAA (Cognition\, Affect\, Behavior\, Consequences\, and Adaptive Affect) model\, this edWebinar teaches educators how to help youth change negative behavioral patterns and improve their mental health using an “inside/out” (as opposed to an “outside/in”) approach. The model reflects how all of us create our own reality. Beginning very early in life\, we meet our neurological needs by adjusting to the environment around us through our actions. These actions\, motivated by feelings and reinforced by the consequences of those actions combine to form a “track\,” an ongoing pattern that we often fall into without even realizing. Over time\, our tracks become the personal reality that we experience. \nBy helping young people to surface their tracks\, particularly the unproductive ones\, they can proactively decide which behaviors and thoughts to change. Programs using the CABCAA model are in use throughout Australia and are being piloted in the United States. Some versions specifically target the negative impact of trauma on learning and behavior. Studies have shown that the programs lead to an improvement in the areas of depression\, aggression\, anxiety\, and self-destructive behavior. \nThis recorded edWebinar will be of interest to teachers and school and district leaders at the elementary through higher education levels. \nAbout the Presenter \nLidia Genovese began her professional life as an elementary school teacher and only later\, in 1976\, became a school psychologist. She holds a Masters of Psychology from Curtin University of Technology in Western Australia. She has held leadership roles in the Australian Psychological Society (APS) and is currently Chair of the APS Perth branch. Lidia has developed training programs\, CABCAA – Changing Tracks\, for leaders based on cognitive behavioral principles. CABCAA (the acronym for Cognition\, Affect\, Behavior\, Consequences\, Adaptive Affect) programs are designed for groups that are experiencing psychological difficulties in their lives ranging from elementary school children to adolescents and young adults. Lidia inspires people to make changes in their lives. Her presentations\, delivered with humor and enthusiasm\, are thought provoking\, entertaining\, and based on best practice learning principles. Throughout her career she has developed and run countless workshops for professionals and the community and presented at conferences all around the world. \n \nAbout the Host \nRamsey Jay\, Jr. is a partner in 21st Century Thinking. SUMMARY:Letting Students Guide Their Learning in Middle School Science—How and Why Should We Do It?
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Anthony Baker\, Project Director\, Next Generation Science\, Digital Promise; Emi Iwatani\, Learning Sciences Researcher\, Digital Promise; and Katie Leist\, Science Teacher\, Middletown Middle School\, OH\nHosted by Sierra Noakes\, Senior Research Project Manager\, Digital Promise \nSponsored by Digital Promise \nWatch the Recording\nGet a CE Certificate for this edWebinar Learn more \nReimagining science instruction to be driven by student questions and investigation is central to the vision of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). This idea is also at the heart of the deeper learning competencies developed by the Hewlett Foundation\, which contend that students should “be active participants in their education…immersed in a challenging curriculum that requires them to seek out and acquire new knowledge\, apply what they have learned\, and build upon that to create new knowledge.” \nDriven by this goal\, 18 teachers from three districts in the League of Innovative Schools\, along with curriculum writers and researchers from Digital Promise\, formed a Challenge Collaborative—a cross-sector effort to co-design solutions for real challenges facing public education—to create NGSS-aligned materials and gain a better understanding of how deeper learning can occur in student-centered science classrooms. \nIn this edWebinar\, hear the processes around the Challenge Collaborative that led to pedagogical shifts and impacted student outcomes\, hear from teachers involved in the study\, and learn more about how challenge-based learning can meet the goals of the NGSS while giving students agency to lead their learning. This recorded edWebinar will be of interest to K-12 teachers\, school and district leaders\, and researchers.  \nAbout the Presenters \nAnthony Baker works on learning experience initiatives involving the Next Generation Science Standards at Digital Promise\, always looking for opportunities to increase equity and student choice in science instruction.
