SUMMARY:Technology in Rural Schools: Leading with Why
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Jamie Foreman\, Deputy Chief Technology Officer\, Albemarle County Public Schools\, VA; Luke Meinert\, Assistant Superintendent\, Yukon-Koyukuk School District\, AK; and Tim Smith\, Supervisor of Instructional Practice and Technology Integration\, Red Lion Area School District\, PA\nHosted by Dr. Beth Holland\, Digital Equity and Rural Project Director\, CoSN \nThis edWebinar series is co-hosted by CoSN and edWeb.net \nWatch the Recording\nGet a CE Certificate for this edWebinar Learn more \nThe Consortium for School Networking (CoSN) is pleased to partner with edWeb.net on this new “Technology in Rural Districts” series. \nIn this first edWebinar of the 2019-2020 season\, Deputy Chief Technology Officer Jamie Foreman\, Assistant Superintendent Luke Meinert\, and Supervisor of Instructional Practice and Technology Integration Tim Smith\, share how they have addressed one of the biggest challenges associated with adopting new technologies in rural contexts: defining\, explaining\, and communicating The Why. Too often\, conversations about technology begin with the “what” – devices and infrastructure – instead of first articulating the “why” or the greater purpose behind the initiative. A strong “why” for implementing technology guides everything from purchasing and future budgets to professional learning plans and staffing. Further\, as these leaders explain\, when everyone in the district understands the greater purpose behind the technology initiative\, then it becomes easier to get community buy-in and support. \nThis recorded edWebinar will be of particular value to superintendents\, assistant superintendents\, district technology leaders\, and school leaders in rural schools. \n \nAbout the Presenters \nJamie Foreman is the Deputy Chief Technology Officer for Albemarle County Public Schools in Virginia. He is passionate about student-centered approaches to teaching and learning and believes technology can powerfully support all students’ access to learning\, increase student agency and voice\, and can support high-quality learning experiences that incorporate the 5 Cs. Jamie started his career as a language arts and science teacher at Fluvanna Middle School. He then transitioned to the role of Instructional Technology Resource teacher at the same school\, which he continued until 2010. In 2010\, he was hired by Albemarle County Public Schools as an instructional technology specialist. Jamie holds a B.A. in psychology and an M.T. in elementary education from the University of Virginia. He recently added a School Administration Endorsement through coursework at James Madison University. \n \nLuke Meinert is the Director of Technology for the Yukon Koyukuk School District in Alaska. He holds master’s degrees in both educational technology and educational leadership. Luke is passionate about providing innovative services and solutions for our Alaskan students. He founded Esports Alaska in 2018 that had over 30 teams compete in its inaugural season. SUMMARY:E-rate and Fiber Networks: Demystifying Special Construction
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Joe Freddoso\, COO and Co-Founder\, Mighty River LLC; Kim Friends\, Vice President\, E-Rate Compliance Services\, CSM Consulting\, Inc.; and Roy Hoover\, Network and Telecommunications Coordinator\, Lancaster-Lebanon Intermediate Unit 13\nHosted by Cynthia Schultz\, Esq.\, Managing Member\, Broadband Law Group\, PLLC \nSponsored by Velocity Fiber \nWatch the Recording\nGet a CE Certificate for this edWebinar Learn more \nThe high one-time and recurring costs of constructing and maintaining telecommunication infrastructure has long been a barrier to K-12 school districts seeking access to affordable\, high-speed broadband — particularly for small and medium school districts. For many districts\, utilizing E-rate discounts for special construction has allowed them to build a high-speed Wide Area Network (WAN) that is both affordable and scalable for their future bandwidth demands. \nIn this edWebinar\, we discuss all things fiber and the E-rate program: the highs\, the lows\, the ups\, and the downs. Our expert panel spans the gamut of experience with successful E-Rate Fiber Special Construction applications and boots on the ground implementation of fiber WANs. Prepare yourself for a lively recorded session with relevant and timely insight on the special construction process from contract to connection! \nThis recorded edWebinar will be of interest to school and district leaders. \nAbout the Presenters \nJoe Freddoso is a former Cisco executive (2000-2007) and former President and CEO of MCNC/The North Carolina Research and Education Network (2007-2014). From 2009-2012\, Joe helped lead MCNC’s efforts to build a state-wide 2600-mile fiber network that serves as the North Carolina’s community anchor backbone network. Joe and his wife April founded Mighty River in 2014. Mighty River has consulted on over 40\,000 linear miles of fiber construction for private and public entities. These fiber networks serve both middle and last mile markets and often connect community anchor institutions to upstream colocation and network access point (NAP) facilities. Mighty River\, through past or current consulting contracts with USAC\, EducationSuperHighway\, the state of Nevada\, and individual E-rate applicants\, has worked in some capacity on over 1000 E-rate special construction applications for districts as large as Broward County\, Florida and projects as small as single public or tribal library. \n \nKim Friends is recognized as one of the nation’s foremost experts in the field of E-rate compliance. She owns and manages one of the country’s largest E-rate consulting firms\, working with almost 400 applicants (schools\, libraries\, and consortia) throughout 15 states. Kim and her talented staff tackle some of the most challenging E-rate situations in their day-to-day operations resulting in a wide swath of experience across all aspects of the program\, which in turn allows CSM to recognize potential concerns often before they are known by the program’s administrators. CSM’s primary offices are located throughout California\, however\, there are satellite offices in Nashville\, TN\, Tallahassee\, FL\, and the greater Washington\, DC area. \n \nRoy Hoover has over 30 years of experience working with technology in K-12 educational environments. He has an associate degree in electronics from York Technical Institute and a bachelor’s degree in management and organizational development from Eastern Mennonite University. He started his career as an audio-visual technician at a school district and held a number of technology positions before moving to Lancaster-Lebanon IU13 as a technology specialist. His current role at IU13 is Network and Telecommunications Coordinator where he is responsible for the regional wide area network that provides network connectivity to public and private schools in the region. This network serves approximately 79\,000 students in Pennsylvania. He is also responsible for the local area networks in IU13 buildings as well as landline telephones\, mobile phones\, and video conferencing services. Roy holds a Global Information Assurance Certification from the SANS Institute. \n \n\nAbout the Host \nCynthia Schultz\, Esq. is one of the nation’s leading experts in E-rate and is passionate in her work to close the digital divide. She is the Managing Member of Broadband Law Group recognized in both the public and private sectors as an authority on federal regulatory and compliance requirements governing the broadband\, communications\, and technology sectors focusing on education and healthcare. She served as general counsel of a broadband company\, and as a partner in a major international law firm in Washington D.C.\, where she also specialized in technology and communications law with a focus on federal technology grants and E-Rate. Cynthia also served as the Chief Compliance Officer for the $4.7B BTOP Program at NTIA and as the Director of Service Provider Support for the $2.25B E-rate Program at USAC\, where she managed compliance issues and advocated on behalf of over 4\,000 service providers nationally. She received her J.D. from American University and B.A. from the George Washington University. \n \nJoin the Technology in Schools community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming edWebinars\, and view recordings of previous programs to earn CE certificates. \n\nVelocity Fiber builds Networks for the Next Generation. We offer managed leased lit and leased dark fiber wide area networks (WANs) to K-12 school districts across most lower 48 states\, and all of our networks are E-rate Category 1 eligible. Velocity Fiber WANs are designed to scale incredibly cost-effectively as bandwidth demands increase\, because school districts should grow minds–not network costs.

SUMMARY:Addressing the Crisis in Adolescent Mental Health: How Districts Can Identify and Support Struggling Students
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dr. Lisa Strohman\, Psychologist\, Attorney\, Author\, and Mother; Kathleen Tuck\, Director of Communications and Community Relations\, Nampa (ID) School District; Dr. Melissa Williams-Scott\, Executive Director of Information Systems\, Dickinson (TX) ISD\nHosted by Annie Galvin Teich\, Writer\, Editor\, and K-12 Market Specialist \nSponsored by Gaggle \nWatch the Recording\nGet a CE Certificate for this edWebinar Learn more \nA crisis in adolescent mental health is forcing school districts to become more proactive in monitoring student mental health and providing services to support students in need. Suicide is now the second leading cause of death among 10–19-year-old adolescents. During this edWebinar\, a panel of experts discuss the research that is helping educators and administrators understand and respond to this deepening crisis; causes of the crisis\, such as academic anxiety\, social pressure\, and childhood trauma; and what two districts —one in Texas and one in Idaho—are doing to address these problems. Funding additional student services\, introducing social-emotional learning\, conducting schoolwide interventions\, and creating a community-based action plan will all be discussed. \nEducation experts now recommend that schools look to the wellbeing of the “whole child.” Many schools are implementing curriculums that include social and emotional learning to teach students skills they can use to moderate and manage their own behavior\, treat others with understanding\, and develop persistence and resilience in the face of their personal challenges. Schools report that students who receive interventions exhibit less violence\, bullying\, and other problem behaviors. \nWatch our panel for a frank discussion on the causes of this crisis and the tools and resources districts are using to address these issues in a holistic way. This recorded edWebinar will be of particular benefit to elementary through high school district and school leaders. \n \nAbout the Presenters \nDr. Lisa Strohman is a clinical psychologist\, author\, public speaker\, and the founder and director of Digital Citizen Academy. Because the truth is\, most people are born with enough music aptitude to play in a symphony orchestra when they are adults\, if they choose. But first we must learn how to “speak music”—to take the musical instrument we all have\, ourselves\, developing that musical capacity from a very young age. The sounds we make\, our movements\, our rhythms—these are the building blocks of music and of early childhood learning. And that’s what Music Together is all about.
