SUMMARY:Integrating SEL into Everyday Instruction
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dr. Doug Fisher\, Professor of Educational Leadership\, San Diego State University \nSponsored by Achieve3000 \nWatch the Recording\nGet a CE Certificate for this edWebinar Learn more \nAcademic learning may be the explicit focus of schooling\, but what teachers say\, the values we express\, the materials and activities we choose\, and the skills we prioritize all influence how our students think\, see themselves\, interact with content and with others\, and assert themselves in the world. While social and emotional learning (SEL) is most familiar as compartmentalized programs or specific interventions\, the truth is\, all learning is social and emotional. This edWebinar makes the case for taking a deliberate approach to the “hidden curriculum” already being taught\, presenting a five-part model of SEL that’s easy to integrate into everyday content instruction. Learn the whys and hows of: \n\nBuilding students’ sense of identity and their belief in their ability to learn\, overcome challenge\, and influence the world around them\nHelping students identify\, describe\, and regulate their emotional responses\nPromoting the skills of cognitive regulation critical to decision making and problem solving\nFostering students’ social skills—including teamwork and sharing—and their ability to establish and repair relationships\nEquipping students to becoming active and involved citizens\n\nOur children’s emotional development is too important to be an add-on or an afterthought\, too important to be left to chance. This integrated approach to SEL empowers every educator to help students develop skills that will serve them in the classroom and throughout their lives. This recorded edWebinar will be of interest to campus leaders\, teachers\, and district-level curriculum coordinators and developers. \nAbout the Presenter \nDr. Doug Fisher is Professor of Educational Leadership at San Diego State University. He is a member of the California Reading Hall of Fame and is the recipient of an International Reading Association Celebrate Literacy Award\, the Farmer Award for excellence in writing from the National Council of Teachers of English\, and a Christa McAuliffe Award for excellence in teacher education. SUMMARY:Character Education: Interview with Medal of Honor Recipient James E. Livingston (Vietnam War)
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the Congressional Medal of Honor Society \nWatch the Recording\nGet a CE Certificate for this edWebinar Learn more \nSign up for this upcoming edWebinar in the Medal of Honor Character Development Program’s edWebinar series. \nPlan for your class to watch the on-demand recording with Medal of Honor Recipient James E. Livingston. Livingston was awarded the Medal of Honor for risking his life while serving as Commanding Officer in Vietnam. After his company had launched an assault on a heavily fortified village in which a Marine company had become isolated\, Livingston fearlessly led his men in an assault against enemy emplacements within the village. Livingston moved to the points of heaviest resistance\, shouting words of encouragement to his Marines and directing their fire. Although painfully wounded twice\, he refused medical treatment. When another company passing through was attacked\, Livingston disregarded the heavy volume of enemy fire and maneuvered his men forward\, halting the enemy’s attack. Wounded a third time and unable to walk\, he steadfastly remained in a dangerously exposed area\, deploying his men to more tenable positions and supervising the evacuation of casualties. Only when assured of the safety of his men did he allow himself to be evacuated. \nThis edWebinar is an inspiring learning opportunity for middle and high school students to connect directly with an American hero. Interviews with Medal of Honor Recipients are part of the Medal of Honor Character Development Program\, a free program that helps students build character and promotes responsible citizenship through a deeper understanding of stories of courage and sacrifice. Before viewing the edWebinar\, we encourage teachers to review Livingston’s story with their class. \n \nAbout the Presenter \nFor conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while serving as Commanding Officer\, Company E\, Second Battalion\, Fourth Marines\, Ninth Marine Amphibious Brigade in action against enemy forces in the Republic of Vietnam. On 2 May 1968\, Company E launched a determined assault on the heavily fortified village of Dai Do\, which had been seized by the enemy on the preceding evening isolating a Marine company from the remainder of the battalion. Skillfully employing screening agents\, Captain Livingston maneuvered his men to assault positions across 500 meters of dangerous open rice paddy while under intense enemy fire. Ignoring hostile rounds impacting near him\, he fearlessly led his men in a savage assault against enemy emplacements within the village. While adjusting supporting arms fire\, Captain Livingston moved to the points of heaviest resistance\, shouting words of encouragement to his Marines\, directing their fire\, and spurring the dwindling momentum of the attack on repeated occasions. Although twice painfully wounded by grenade fragments\, he refused medical treatment and courageously led his men in the destruction of over 100 mutually supporting bunkers\, driving the remaining enemy from their positions\, and relieving the pressure on the stranded Marine company. As the two companies consolidated positions and evacuated casualties\, a third company passed through the friendly lines launching an assault on the adjacent village of Dinh To\, only to be halted by a furious counterattack of an enemy battalion. Swiftly assessing the situation and disregarding the heavy volume of enemy fire\, Captain Livingston boldly maneuvered the remaining effective men of his company forward\, joined forces with the heavily engaged Marines\, and halted the enemy’s counterattack. Wounded a third time and unable to walk\, he steadfastly remained in a dangerously exposed area\, deploying his men to more tenable positions and supervising the evacuation of casualties. Only when assured of the safety of his men did he allow himself to be evacuated. Captain Livingston’s gallant actions uphold the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service. \n \nAbout the Host \nCathy Ehlers Metcalf joined the Medal of Honor Character Development Program as Vice President of Education in 2015 after serving as a Regional Curriculum Trainer. SUMMARY:PBIS and Middle School: Reversing the Engagement Decline
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Eric Davis\, Head of Learning and District Innovation\, Classcraft\nHosted by James Shetler\, Head of Mid-Market Sales\, Classcraft \nSponsored by Classcraft \nWatch the Recording\nGet a CE Certificate for this edWebinar Learn more \nPositive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is the best tool administrators have to promote positive behavior change\, and middle school is the most important place where PBIS can be implemented. Middle school is when student engagement begins to plummet\, never to bounce back. \nThe problem? While PBIS implementations often lead to incremental improvements in behavior\, they miss a larger opportunity to improve learning outcomes by neglecting the issue of student engagement. \nIn this edWebinar\, discover why implementing a PBIS framework that focuses holistically on student engagement — and not simply behavior — is not only more likely to promote positive behavior change but to lead to measurable gains in SEL and school climate. \nAfter viewing this edWebinar\, you’ll have a better understanding of the relationship between behavior and engagement\, the relative impact of extrinsic and intrinsic motivation and how each can be represented within the context of PBIS\, and PBIS’s potential to create a safe space for failure and experimentation that is critical to the development of middle school students. \nThis recorded edWebinar will be of interest to school and district leaders of middle school grade levels. \n \nAbout the Presenter \nEric Davis\, Head of Learning and District Innovation at Classcraft\, is a seasoned educator\, organizational leader\, product designer\, fundraiser\, thought partner\, and professional coach. He specializes in building culture\, curriculum\, and programs featuring practical strategies in experiential contexts. \n \n \nAbout the Host\n\nJames Shetler has 10 years of experience helping organizations reach their goals by leveraging technology. After seeing the impact that can be made in the classroom\, James eagerly joined Classcraft as its first partnership manager. Through his time at Classcraft\, he has supported districts and schools to make meaningful changes to engage students and facilitated presentations at ISTE\, TCEA\, among others. \n \nJoin the Creating a Positive School Climate community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming edWebinars\, and view recordings of previous programs to earn CE certificates. \n\nBy promoting happier\, more engaged classrooms and stronger relationships between teachers and students\, Classcraft makes teaching more fulfilling.
