SUMMARY:Elementary Inquiry: K-12 Vertical Alignment for Teaching Research Skills to Our Youngest Learners
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Michelle Luhtala\, Library Department Chair\, New Canaan High School\, CT; Samantha Bremekamp\, Media Specialist & Innovation Facilitator\, Shrewsbury Borough School\, NJ; and Jim Knox\, Curator of Education at Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo \nSponsored by Mackin Educational Resources \nWatch the Recording\nGet a CE Certificate for this edWebinar Learn more \nRaising the bar on equity demands that all learners leave high school equipped with inquiry skills that will empower them to pursue civic reasoning throughout their adult life. At edWeb.net/emergingtech\, we frequently focus on inquiry instruction for middle and high school students. In this session\, we walk that learning way back to the elementary years. How can we prepare our elementary learners for success throughout their inquiry journey? Please watch Michelle Luhtala for a conversation with Samantha Bremekamp\, Media Specialist & Innovation Facilitator at Shrewsbury Borough School in New Jersey and Jim Knox\, Curator of Education at Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo to look at inquiry projects to participate in a discussion about inquiry for young learners. \nThis recorded edWebinar will be of interest to grades K-12 educators across subject areas.  \n \nAbout the Presenters \nMichelle Luhtala\, Library Department Chair at New Canaan High School in Connecticut\, was one of five school librarians named as a “Mover and Shaker” by Library Journal in 2015. She is the winner of the 2011 “I Love My Librarian” Award and the Library Association’s 2010 Outstanding Librarian Award. The New Canaan High School Library won AASL’s National School Library Program of the year in 2010. Follow Michelle on Twitter @mluhtala. \n \nSamantha Bremekamp is a media specialist and innovation facilitator at Shrewsbury Borough School in New Jersey\, going into her fifth year in these roles. Prior to that\, while obtaining her master’s degree in library and information science and her teaching credentials\, Samantha worked as a reference librarian in a modest-sized 27-branch library system. Inquiry has always been important to her as has her ability and doggedness to get down to the facts. Before becoming a librarian\, Samantha was an assistant director at NYU\, where she worked with undergraduates and graduates. It was there that she realized how education was lacking that inquiry drive due to a massive loss of school librarians. Determined to help change that\, Samantha went back to school and found a job working with preK through 8th-grade students. Having an ability to ask questions and a foundation to find the answers is vital to pursuing civic reasoning through high school\, college\, and adulthood. \n \nJim Knox is a TEDx Speaker with more than 3\,000 presentations to his credit. As a wildlife expert and keynote speaker\, he revels in sharing his passion for working with the world’s most remarkable animals to transport audiences into his wild world. Early on\, Jim realized he had a unique opportunity to partner with others to save the world’s wildlife through the power of the spoken word. A graduate of Cornell University\, Jim has written for PBS television and appeared on The Today Show\, The CBS Early Show\, and Fox News\, and has been featured in the New York Times. \n  \nJoin the Emerging Tech for Schools and Libraries community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming edWebinars\, and view recordings of previous programs to earn CE certificates. \n\nMackin is one of the top providers of library and classroom materials for grades PK-12. Working with over 18\,000 publishers and a database of nearly 3 million printed titles\, and more than 1.9 million digital titles\, Mackin supplies print books\, eBooks\, online educational databases\, audiobooks and video resources to schools around the globe.

Successfully leading digital transformations within rural school districts has a tremendous impact on our nation as a whole. \nTechnology planning and investments can typically be quite complicated. Often the challenges begin almost from the moment a district begins to consider next steps in a comprehensive technology plan. With tight budgets and multiple stakeholders involved\, each with valid concerns\, along with the constant evolution of technology tools and resources\, a framework for evaluating technology initiatives and guidelines for arriving at well-supported decisions are more important than ever before. \nWatch this edWebinar with three tech-savvy superintendents\, from three different states\, as they share how they lead their districts in creating technology plans that align priorities\, costs\, and outcomes and also assure that the ability to sustain technology initiatives over time is part of the planning process. Each superintendent explains their strategies and imparts their expertise on the total cost of ownership\, student outcomes\, budget management\, and the value of investment. Tools and resources to evaluate\, rethink and strengthen technology planning and decision making will be shared. \nGiven the current challenges involved with the efforts to continue teaching and learning in the midst of multiple school closures\, the issues involved in school districts’ strategic technology planning are now more urgent and relevant than ever. Our three superintendents share strategies they have implemented to lead learning for all students in their school districts during these most unprecedented and complex times. \nThis recorded edWebinar will be of particular value to school superintendents\, K-12 school and district leaders\, and aspiring leaders.  \nAbout the Presenters \nDr. Jeanne Barker is the director of schools for Lenoir City School District in Lenoir City\, Tennessee. DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dr. Lisa Strohman\, Psychologist\, Author\, and Founder of Digital Citizen Academy; Dr. Susan Enfield\, Superintendent\, Highline Public Schools\, WA; Dr. Tom Leonard\, Superintendent\, Eanes Independent School District\, TX; and Dr. Michael Muñoz\, Superintendent\, Rochester Public Schools\, MN\nHosted by Annie Galvin Teich\, Writer\, Editor\, and K-12 Market Specialist \nSponsored by Gaggle \nWatch the Recording\nGet a CE Certificate for this edWebinar Learn more \nToday’s students are experiencing an unprecedented shift in the way they learn. School buildings across the country have closed in response to the pandemic\, affecting more than 55 million students. Educators have worked hard to move to distance learning\, ensuring that students can still be engaged in their education from home. But with more than a dozen states announcing their intention to keep buildings closed for the rest of the semester\, it’s unlikely that students will return to their normal routines anytime soon. \nDistance learning can be challenging and isolating for students\, who may feel disconnected from friends and teachers. Educators can get a sense of students’ mental health and well-being in the classroom\, but losing that face-to-face contact makes it harder to gauge how students are doing during this stressful time. While schools may have protocols in place to support struggling students on campus\, educators may be unsure of how they can help remotely. \nWatch this edWebinar for a discussion about this “new normal” of distance learning. We dive into the trends of how and what students are doing as seen through Gaggle’s data\, as well as how educators can keep students safe and connected while they learn at home. \nThis recorded edWebinar will be of benefit to school and district leaders of elementary through high school grade levels. \n \nAbout the Presenters \nDr. Lisa Strohman is a clinical psychologist\, author\, public speaker and the founder and director of Digital Citizen Academy. She established Digital Citizen Academy to proactively prevent and educate students\, educators\, and parents on the issues resulting from technology use and misuse. In addition\, Dr. Strohman was a Visiting Scholar for the FBI working on homicidal pedophilia when Columbine occurred\, giving her the opportunity to be on the front lines of how technology impacts our youth. She has continued to work with law enforcement and the FBI on safety and cybercrimes involving adolescents\, while also lending her knowledge and guidance to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. \n \nDr. Susan Enfield serves as Superintendent of Highline Public Schools in Washington. Knowing every student by name\, strength\, and need is the promise of Highline Public Schools. Under the leadership of Dr. Enfield\, the district is delivering on this promise by implementing a bold strategic plan committed to ensuring that students graduate bilingual and biliterate with problem-solving and critical thinking skills that will prepare them for the future they choose. \nA former high school English\, journalism\, and ELL teacher\, Dr. Enfield served as Chief Academic Officer and then as Interim Superintendent for Seattle Public Schools before coming to Highline in 2012. She previously held leadership positions in Evergreen Public Schools (Vancouver\, WA)\, Portland Public Schools\, and the Pennsylvania Department of Education. \n \nDr. Tom Leonard serves as Superintendent of Eanes Independent School District in Texas. He was recently named Citizen of the Year by the Westlake Chamber of Commerce. \n \n \nDr. Michael Muñoz serves as Superintendent of Rochester Public Schools in Minnesota. Dr. Muñoz began his tenure in this role in 2011. SUMMARY:The Five Pillars of Reading: A Foundation for Literacy Success in a Virtual World
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Jason Carroll\, Director of Product Management\, Texthelp; and Kimberly Nix\, Senior Professional Development Manager\, Texthelp \nSponsored by Texthelp \nWatch the Recording\nGet a CE Certificate for this edWebinar Learn more \nAll the best things in life start with a strong foundation and the ability to read is a critical building block of every student’s literacy journey. \nEvery child is different\, each one of them unique with their own star qualities\, strengths\, and challenges. And for many students\, being in a class and now learning remotely from home can feel intimidating and even overwhelming\, which can lead to a loss in reading achievement. \nAcademic success isn’t a given for an alarming 60% of US students classified as ‘struggling’. This group includes low performers on The Nation’s Report Card\, as well as English Language Learners\, or those qualifying for an Individualized Education Program (IEP). Factor in students with learning differences like dyslexia\, and that’s an awful lot of students facing an uphill climb each day. \nNow\, can you imagine being able to give every single child in your class – regardless of age or ability – the proper one-on-one support they need while they practice their reading\, even remotely? Imagine helping them understand the meaning of unfamiliar words and giving them a full appreciation of the cadence and content of any reading passage\, whether in the classroom or from home. \nIn this edWebinar\, we explore the five pillars of reading and why they are essential to successfully teach students to read. In particular\, we explore how technology provides that much needed one-on-one support to further develop these pillars and\, in turn\, prevent students from losing reading achievement in times of change and in remote learning environments. \nThis recorded edWebinar will be of interest to kindergarten through middle school teachers and school leaders. \nAbout the Presenters \nJason Carroll is Director of Product Management at Texthelp. He has trained thousands on the effective use of educational technology throughout the United States and beyond since his start in education over a decade ago. It is not just another tool for your teaching tool belt. Empowerment is so much more than that. It can be as simple as the feeling students get when their opinions are validated (little e empowerment)\, or it can be as complex as taking action to reduce ocean pollution (big E empowerment). School districts that have begun to shift their focus from engaging students to empowering them\, and from differentiation to personalized learning\, have seen a rise in test scores\, motivation\, attention\, and self-confidence. \nIn this edWebinar\, Patti Drapeau shares practical\, evidence-based practices that focus instruction on empowerment. She provides stories of real ways students have made a difference within their school and beyond\, and delivers powerful messages about student voice\, choice\, and independence. Drapeau presents the results of a survey that indicates the differences between what students say empowers them and what teachers say empowers their students. Discover what happens when teachers give over different degrees of control and let their students direct their own learning. \nThis recorded edWebinar will benefit K–12 teachers\, school and district leaders\, coordinators\, teacher leaders and specialists\, and special and gifted education professionals. \n \nAbout the Presenter \nPatti Drapeau is an internationally active educational consultant\, author\, and presenter\, with more than 25 years of classroom experience. SUMMARY:Inspiring Student Empowerment: Moving Beyond Engagement\, Refining Differentiation
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Patti Drapeau\, International Educational Consultant\, Author\, and Presenter \nSponsored by Free Spirit Publishing \nWatch the Recording\nGet a CE Certificate for this edWebinar Learn more \nEmpowerment is a philosophy of teaching and an approach to learning.
