SUMMARY:How to Encourage a Sensory-Friendly Classroom During a Pandemic
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Keriann Wilmot\, OTR/L\nHosted by Stephanie Roselli\, Executive Editor\, Gryphon House \nSponsored by Gryphon House \nWatch the Recording\nGet a CE Certificate for this edWebinar Learn more \nOffering a sensory-friendly classroom through movement activities\, fun manipulatives\, and flexible seating can help all children engage and attend more during the early childhood learning process. Children with sensory processing difficulties\, though\, need special strategies as part of a “sensory diet” in order to succeed\, especially if they are overwhelmed with the classroom environment. \nThis edWebinar describes fun experiences to include in the sensory-friendly classroom\, some information on sensory processing issues\, and what a sensory diet looks like in the classroom\, so teachers can incorporate these activities seamlessly into their daily routines. However\, COVID-19 has provided new rules and situations that may make sensory experiences and routines in the classroom different. There may be the smells of new cleaning products\, potential rules and requirements of wearing masks\, and social distancing of students who were previously able to congregate in small areas playing together. We are all in unchartered territory. \nThis recorded edWebinar will be of interest to preK-3 teachers. \n \nAbout the Presenter \nKeriann Wilmot is a full-time pediatric occupational therapist. With more than 20 years of clinical experience\, professionally Keri specializes in working with infants\, young children and their families by promoting developmental milestones in clients’ homes\, in the public school system and in the community. \nOver time it was clear that Keri had developed a talent for finding developmental toys that promoted a child’s educational skills\, in fun\, natural and playful ways. In 2009 ToyQueen.com was developed as a resource for all parents\, caregivers and educators to learn about toys\, experiences and play tips to improve the lives of children. \nKeri’s first book\, Wired Differently: A Teacher’s Guide to Understanding Sensory Processing Issues\, will be published by Gryphon House on September 1\, 2020. In addition\, Keri is an expert contributor as an occupational therapist and play expert to organizations such as Understood.org\, Common Sense Media and The Genius of Play. \n \nAbout the Host \nStephanie Roselli is the executive editor at Gryphon House\, Inc.\, the leading publisher of educational resources for teachers and parents\, where she acquires and develops the latest books from today’s top early childhood experts. \n  \n  \n  \nJoin the Early Learning Book Chats community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming edWebinars\, and view recordings of previous programs to earn CE certificates. \n\nGryphon House\, Inc. is an award-winning publisher of early childhood resources for teachers and parents.

SUMMARY:Strengthening Problem Solving Virtually and in Person Part 1: Mathematical Discourse and Collaboration
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Sara Delano Moore\, Ph.D.\, Director of Professional Learning\, ORIGO Education \nSponsored by ORIGO Education \nWatch the Recording\nGet a CE Certificate for this edWebinar Learn more \nProblem solving is an essential skill. Confident problem solvers can identify and frame a problem productively\, they have strategies to help them approach the problem\, and they can assess whether their solution strategy is successful. Rigorous mathematics instruction includes a strong focus on applications of mathematics; these applications are often grounded in problem solving. Problem-solving tasks can occur in real-world contexts or in mathematical contexts. In either case\, collaboration and discourse is essential for problem solving. The more complex the problem\, the more important multiple perspectives are in finding a good solution. Selecting appropriate tasks and facilitating productive collaboration and discourse are critical teacher skills for supporting problem solving in the classroom. \nIn this first edWebinar of a two-part series\, Sara Delano Moore\, Ph.D.\, Director of Professional Learning for ORIGO Education\, focuses on strategies for facilitating productive collaboration and discourse. The session shares strategies for collaborative work in both face-to-face and virtual settings with an emphasis on providing every student with opportunities to share ideas and give feedback to classmates. The session also discusses a variety of question types and contexts for using each one. Questioning is critical to supporting rich discourse within small groups. Watch Sara in this session solve some math problems and learn strategies for discourse and collaboration in problem solving. \nThis recorded edWebinar will be of interest to elementary-level teachers and school leaders. \nPart 2 – Strengthening Problem Solving Virtually and in Person Part 2: Mathematical Task Selection \n \nAbout the Presenter \nSara Delano Moore\, Ph.D. serves as Director of Professional Learning and Chair of the Mathematics Advisory Board at ORIGO Education. A fourth-generation educator\, Sara’s work emphasizes the power of deep understanding and multiple representations for learning mathematics. Her interests include building mathematical comprehension and operation sense\, incorporating high-quality literature into mathematics instruction\, and connecting mathematics with engineering design and computational thinking. Sara has served as a classroom teacher of mathematics and science\, a mathematics teacher educator at the University of Kentucky\, Director of the Kentucky Center for Middle School Academic Achievement\, and Director of Mathematics & Science at ETA hand2mind. She has authored numerous articles in professional journals and is a co-author of the Mathematize It! series of books. She is also a member of the Visible Learning for Mathematics writing team\, including two volumes of the Teaching Mathematics in the Visible Learning Classroom series. \n  \nJoin the Mathematics for Young Learners community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming edWebinars\, and view recordings of previous programs to earn CE certificates. \n\nORIGO Education is dedicated to making learning meaningful\, enjoyable and accessible for all students with Pre-K to Grade 6 print and digital instructional materials\, as well as professional learning for mathematics.
