We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. \n\n\nLearn more about earning a CE certificate and our accessibility features. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nToday's students are surrounded by short texts\, rapid-fire content\, and quick answers. Research shows many struggle to sustain focus and read with deep understanding\, even with short texts\, let alone longer\, more complex ones. Yet the ability to follow ideas\, people\, and arguments across an entire book is central to strong comprehension and to success in school and beyond. \nIn this edWebinar\, literacy expert Jennifer Serravallo explores why whole-book reading is essential for building comprehension\, critical thinking\, and lasting engagement. She will share the compelling research behind teaching with whole books\, including how extended reading builds stamina\, vocabulary\, and background knowledge in ways that short passages alone cannot. \nAttendees will also learn what to consider when selecting appropriate\, grade-level whole texts\, from text complexity and content to student interest and instructional purpose. Jen will then walk through five steps for planning explicit\, engaging comprehension lessons that help students build the skills and strategies they need for deep comprehension. \nWhether you teach in a classroom\, coach teachers\, lead intervention\, or set literacy priorities for a school or district\, you'll leave with practical\, classroom-ready moves you can put to work right away. These strategies work alongside any core literacy program and help teachers extend reading instruction beyond the ELA block\, into social studies and science. \nThis edWebinar will be of interest to grades 1-6 teachers\, librarians\, school leaders\, and district leaders\, as well as pre-service teachers. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Presenter \nJennifer Serravallo is a New York Times bestselling author\, award-winning educator\, literacy consultant\, and frequent invited speaker at state and national conferences. SUMMARY:Reading Isn't Enough: Why Writing Is the Missing Lever
DESCRIPTION:Events\n\n\n\n\nPresented by Amy Siracusano\, M.S.Ed.\, Experienced Educator\, National Literacy Consultant; and Dr. Cheryl Lundy Swift\, Experienced Educator\, Director of Professional Learning and Academic Partnership\, Learning Without Tears \nSponsored by Learning Without Tears \n\n\n\nRegister Here\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLearn more about earning a CE certificate and our accessibility features. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMany schools are making important gains in early reading through structured literacy and evidence-based instruction\, yet many principals are noticing a troubling disconnect: students who can decode text still struggle to write complete sentences\, explain their thinking\, and demonstrate comprehension. This edWebinar explores why writing is not simply an outcome of reading instruction\, but a critical driver of it.  \nDesigned for elementary principals and instructional leaders along with teachers\, this session examines how explicit instruction in handwriting\, spelling\, sentence construction\, and written expression strengthens phonics\, orthographic mapping\, language development\, and comprehension. Attendees will learn how writing functions as an essential component of a coherent literacy system rather than an add-on.  \nThrough classroom examples and leadership "look-fors\," attendees will gain clarity on what effective writing instruction looks like in practice and how principals can support it through scheduling\, professional learning\, and instructional feedback without increasing teacher overload. The presenters will also address common misconceptions that sideline writing and offer practical leadership moves to elevate writing as part of core literacy instruction. Attendees will leave with actionable strategies to strengthen reading outcomes by intentionally leveraging writing to support not only decoding\, but also language\, thinking\, and communication for all learners.  \nBy the end of this edWebinar\, attendees will be able to:  \n\nExplain how explicit writing instruction\, including handwriting\, spelling\, and sentence construction\, strengthens foundational reading skills such as phonics\, orthographic mapping\, language development\, and comprehension\nIdentify key instructional "look-fors" that signal effective writing instruction and use focused feedback to strengthen both reading and writing outcomes\nApply leadership strategies to elevate writing as a core component of literacy instruction through intentional decisions about scheduling\, professional learning\, and instructional coherence without adding initiatives or increasing teacher overload\n\n This edWebinar will be of interest to elementary teachers\, principals\, instructional leaders\, and district leaders. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Presenters \nAmy Siracusano worked in public education for 23 years before becoming a national literacy consultant.
