SUMMARY:Measuring the Quality of Nature-Based Classrooms Using the NABERS Tool
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Rachel Larimore\, Ph.D.\, Chief Visionary\, Samara Early Learning; Patti Bailie\, Ph.D.\, Associate Professor of Early Childhood Education\, University of Maine at Farmington; and Arianna Pikus\, M.S.\, Doctoral Candidate\, Department of Human Development and Family Studies\, Michigan State University\nModerated by Jennifer Lewis\, President\, Gryphon House\, Inc. \nSponsored by Gryphon House \nWatch the Recording\nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nNature-based education is a rapidly growing approach in early childhood. The Nature-Based Education Rating Scale (NABERS) is a tool developed to help identify the quality and level of “natureness” for those PreK and K-3 programs adding nature to their curricula. This edWebinar first identifies the core principles of Nature-based Early Childhood Education (NbECE) and then discusses tangible measures of quality. Viewers leave the session able to identify nature-based practices in the program structure\, staffing\, physical environment\, community partnerships\, and family engagement. \nWhile other measures of quality exist in early childhood education (e.g.\, ECERS\, CLASS) this is the first tool to specifically address the features of nature-based education. NbECE is considered the blending of early childhood and environmental education and the NABERS tool focuses specifically on the overlap between these two disciplines. That is\, NABERS does not address measures of quality related to early childhood in general\, but rather those practices specific to the nature-based approach. For example\, family engagement is important whether a program is nature based or not. Thus\, NABERS only addresses aspects specific to family engagement such as family education related to the benefits of nature-based learning. \nView this edWebinar to learn how to: \n\nIdentify the core principles of a nature-based early childhood approach\nDescribe quality nature-based practices related to program structure\, staffing\, physical environment setup\, and family engagement\n\nThis recorded edWebinar is of interest to PreK-3 teachers and school and district leaders. \n\nAbout the Presenters \nRachel A. Larimore\, Ph.D. is an educator\, consultant\, speaker\, researcher\, and author. She has written multiple books including Establishing a Nature-Based Preschool; Preschool Beyond Walls: Blending Early Childhood Education and Nature-Based Learning; and the forthcoming Evaluating Natureness: Measuring the Quality of Nature-Based Classrooms in Pre-K Through 3rd Grade. Dr. Larimore is the founder and Chief Visionary of Samara Early Learning\, an organization focused on helping early childhood educators start nature-based schools or add nature-based approaches into their existing programs. Prior to founding Samara\, she spent more than a decade starting and directing one of the first nature-based preschools in the United States. \n\nPatti Bailie\, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor of Early Childhood Education at the University of Maine at Farmington. She has worked in the field of early childhood environmental education for 30 years at three different nature centers: as founding Director of the Schlitz Audubon Nature Preschool in Milwaukee\, WI\, Co-Director of the Early Childhood Outdoors Institute at the Fontenelle Nature Association in Omaha\, NE\, and an early childhood environmental educator at the Nature Center at Shaker Lakes in Cleveland\, OH. SUMMARY:Boost Reading Comprehension and Learning: How Explicit Writing Instruction Can Help
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Natalie Wexler\, Education Writer and Author \nSponsored by Voyager Sopris Learning \nWatch the Recording\nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nOnly 27% of American students score proficient or above on national writing tests. One reason? Writing is hard. Another: Most teachers haven’t received good training in how to teach it. But when the writing process is broken down into manageable chunks that are explicitly taught in a logical sequence\, all students can learn to write well. With the right instructional method—and intervention when needed—writing can also identify and compensate for gaps in background knowledge that interfere with comprehension\, familiarize students with the complex syntax of written language\, deepen and cement knowledge of content\, and foster analytical thinking. \nIn this edWebinar\, viewers learn: \n\nWhy writing is potentially the most powerful lever we have for building academic knowledge and vocabulary\nWhy standard instructional approaches to writing have failed to unlock its potential\nWhy any reading intervention should include a writing component\nWhy it’s important to modulate the heavy cognitive load that writing imposes on working memory\nHow sentence-level activities can modulate cognitive load\, build writing skills\, familiarize students with complex syntax\, and deepen knowledge\nHow teaching students to create a linear outline can modulate the cognitive load imposed by writing at length while deepening their understanding of content\n\nThis recorded edWebinar is of interest to K-12 teachers and school and district leaders. \nAbout the Presenter \nNatalie Wexler is an education writer and the author of The Knowledge Gap: The Hidden Cause of America’s Broken Education System—and How to Fix It (Avery\, 2019). SUMMARY:Paving the Path to World Language Proficiency: Adopting a Can-Do Attitude
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Michael Griffin\, Director of Content Specialty\, World Languages\, Carnegie Learning; and Andrew Bowen\, Director of Instructional Design\, World Languages\, Carnegie Learning \nSponsored by Carnegie Learning \nWatch the Recording\nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nMany world language educators are faced with the challenge of implementing a more proficiency-based approach to language instruction but are limited by their traditional world language materials. Adopting a growth mindset can be the first step in overcoming this hurdle. Studies show that a growth mindset increases student motivation\, achievement\, and willingness to take risks—all vital skills to language acquisition. Building a growth mindset culture empowers students and teachers alike to view challenges as opportunities and celebrate their growth and successes. \nAs we apply this mindset to world language instruction\, we flip the switch on traditionally structured lessons and take a deep dive into results-driven lesson design. We also consider how realistic goal setting with Can-Do statements can facilitate growth in proficiency. In this edWebinar\, viewers take the next steps for their own growth by: \n\nAnalyzing the benefits and strategies of fostering growth mindset skills in the language classroom\nUsing Can-Do statements to prioritize performance and proficiency\nSetting skill-based goals for students and practicing backward design to elicit tangible evidence of student growth\nWorkshopping content by breaking it into small “chunks” for students to use with communicative tasks\n\nThis recorded edWebinar is of interest to K-12 teachers and school and district leaders. \n\nAbout the Presenters \nMichael Griffin taught Spanish and French for 16 years before joining Carnegie Learning\, Inc. He has also developed educational content materials for Carnegie Learning world language programs and has presented at many regional and national conferences\, including NECTFL\, CSCTFL\, and ACTFL. \n\nAs a former world languages educator and lifelong language learner\, Andrew Bowen has devoted his professional (and at times\, personal!) life to ensuring that all students have access to effective language learning resources. His current role as Director of Instructional Design for World Languages is led by his passion for languages being learned the right way\, with students feeling empowered to put these important skills to practical use and having tangible evidence of their multilingual accomplishments.
