Davis\, Superintendent of Richland School District Two\, offers a response to the question\, “Are all the children well?” that addresses the philosophy\, research\, and intentionality necessary to ensure premier learning experiences and outcomes that illuminate\, validate\, and celebrate the capabilities of all children. Through this work\, the teachers and administrators in Richland Two are truly preparing students for their chosen pathways to live and work in a global society. \nThis vision and mission are amplified by the work of Dr. Helen Grant\, Chief Diversity and Multicultural Inclusion Officer\, who shares specific examples of how Richland School District Two works to ensure systemic change through district-wide education\, development\, and outreach. Dr. Sabina Mosso-Taylor\, a Richland School District Two principal\, shares insights into how she and her teachers foster and support social justice issues through systematic and ongoing professional development\, culturally relevant practices\, and authentic teacher/student/family engagements at the elementary level. \nThis recorded presentation will be of particular value to school superintendents\, K-12 school and district leaders\, and aspiring leaders. \n \nAbout the Presenters \nAn educator for more than 20 years\, Dr. Baron R. Davis is Richland School District Two’s Superintendent\, and the first African American to hold this position in the district’s 90-plus-year history. Dr. Davis served a transition year as the superintendent-elect prior to assuming leadership of the district in 2017. In one of his first tasks as Superintendent\, the 2017-2020 Strategic Plan\, Dr. Davis lays out his vision for partnering with families\, staff\, and the community to make Richland Two the premier school district. \nDr. Davis has advanced the district’s long-standing commitment to providing superior learning experiences in top-notch facilities. Under his leadership\, voters in Richland Two approved a request to borrow $468 million to address district facility needs in the areas of safety and security\, academic learning spaces\, transportation\, technology\, and arts/athletics. The bond referendum projects are part of a 10-year facility plan that provides a pathway to premier facilities across the district. Dr. Davis has opened doors for small and minority vendors to do business with Richland Two by hosting vendor fairs specifically for them. \nDr. Davis’s inclusionary practices led Richland Two to become one of only three districts in South Carolina and 250 nationwide to be placed on the 10th Annual AP® District Honor Roll by the College Board. To earn this distinction\, Richland Two had to\, since 2017\, increase the number of students participating in Advanced Placement while also increasing or maintaining the percentage of students earning AP Exam scores of 3 or higher. \nDr. Davis has made increasing recruitment and retention of male teachers of color a priority by launching the Premier 100 initiative. About six percent of Richland Two’s teachers are male and minority. However\, nationwide that number drops to less than two percent\, despite the fact that the percentage of students of color continues to rise. Premier 100 partners with the Call Me MISTER program to recruit and retain male educators of color. \n  \n \nIn August 2015\, Dr. Helen Nelson Grant became Richland Two’s first Chief Diversity and Multicultural Inclusion Officer. She is among the first to pioneer this work in K-12 public education in South Carolina. \nIn her role in the school district\, Dr. Grant is responsible for recommending\, developing\, implementing\, and managing programs and initiatives aimed at advancing diversity and multicultural inclusion. She serves as the chief advisor to the superintendent in the development and implementation of diversity and multicultural practices and initiatives and she is the district’s chief spokesperson and district representative for diversity and multicultural matters. Her work includes providing professional development to district staff\, coordinating and implementing district-wide cultural celebrations\, and advising administrators on issues or concerns regarding diversity and inclusion. \nThe Office of Diversity and Multicultural Inclusion facilitates Community Conversations\, a series of events that bring together district families\, employees\, community members and business partners on a variety of topics impacting education. The Office also facilitates district-wide celebrations and recognitions including Hispanic Heritage Month\, Black History Month\, Women’s History Month\, Kindness Month\, and Inclusion Month. \nDr. Grant serves as the lead for Richland Two’s AASA 2020-2021 Equity in Action cohort and for the district’s Equity Work Group. She is a member of the district’s Opportunity/Knowledge Gap Task Force and she assists with the coordination of district initiatives to evaluate and promote more equitable systems\, policies\, and procedures. \n \n \nDr. Sabina Mosso-Taylor is an experienced principal with a demonstrated history of working in the education management industry. She is skilled in K-12 education\, NBCT – EC Generalist\, classroom management\, lesson planning\, differentiated instruction\, culturally relevant teaching\, and curriculum development. Dr. Mosso-Taylor is a strong education professional with a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) focused on early childhood education – early literacy from the University of South Carolina-Columbia. Currently\, she is the principal of Jackson Creek Elementary School in Columbia\, South Carolina. \n \nAbout the Host \nDr. Valerie Truesdale joined AASA early in 2019 as the assistant executive director responsible for guiding leadership development services and programs. With years of experience in the superintendency and roles in instructional technology\, she knows that AASA’s Leadership Network can be a substantial resource for school leaders trying to keep pace with the rapidly changing delivery of K-12 education. \n \nClosed captioning will be added to the recording within 2 weeks of the live presentation. \nJoin the Leading for Equity community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming edWebinars\, and view recordings of previous programs to earn CE certificates. \n\n\n \n \n\n \n \n \nThe AASA Leadership Network drives superintendent success\, innovation\, and growth\, shaping the future of public education while preparing students for what’s next. SUMMARY:The Science\, Art\, and Craft of Teaching Reading and Writing
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dr. Shane Templeton\, Educator\, Researcher\, Speaker\, and HMH Into Reading Program Author \nSponsored by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt \nWatch the Recording\nClosed captioning will be added to the recording within 2 weeks of the live presentation.\nGet a CE Certificate for this edWebinar Learn more \nHow do we balance the science\, art\, and craft of teaching reading? We bring a developmental– and classroom-based perspective to the “Science of Reading.” We begin by demonstrating that it is not possible to teach beginning reading effectively without attention to writing as well: Research shows that reading and writing advance together as two faces of the same knowledge coin. For emergent and beginning readers and writers\, the development of phonemic awareness\, letter-sound knowledge\, fluency\, and vocabulary are developmentally intertwined. The art and craft of teaching literacy involve understanding this complexity and applying it in the moment with learners. \nIn this edWebinar\, educator and researcher Dr. Shane Templeton shows that by appropriately determining the timing\, pacing\, and type of instruction for these intertwined types of knowledge\, teachers ensure that more learners will successfully attain their literacy potential. For those children who may still struggle\, we will be better able to adjust instruction appropriately and effectively. \nThis recorded edWebinar will be of interest to K-5 teachers\, literacy coaches\, and curriculum leaders. \n \nAbout the Presenter \nDr. Shane Templeton\, co-author of Words Their Way\, is Foundation Professor Emeritus of Literacy Studies at the University of Nevada\, Reno\, and a former classroom teacher at the primary and secondary levels. His research has focused primarily on developmental word knowledge in elementary\, middle\, and high school students\, and he has been published in both research and practitioner journals. \nIn addition to Words Their Way\, Shane has authored or co-authored a number of books on the teaching of literacy and word study including Teaching Reading and Writing: The Developmental Approach; Vocabulary Their Way: Word Study for Middle and Secondary Students; and Orthographic Knowledge and the Foundations of Literacy. Since 1987 Shane served as a member of the Usage Panel of The American Heritage Dictionary. He has served as an educational consultant for The American Heritage Children’s Dictionary and was a consultant for and wrote the foreword to Curious George’s Dictionary. SUMMARY:Mathematics Pedagogy: Rigor and Engagement
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Prof. Raz Kupferman\, Co-founder and Chief Scientist\, Matific \nSponsored by Matific \nWatch the Recording\nClosed captioning will be added to the recording within 2 weeks of the live presentation.\nGet a CE Certificate for this edWebinar Learn more \nWe’ve heard again and again about the educational challenges of the 21st century. From the point of view of policymaking\, a classroom is where our future scientists\, engineers\, programmers\, doctors\, economists and entrepreneurs currently sit. We have a moral duty to provide every child the chance to succeed in life and realize their potential. \nWhen you look at the same group of children 20 years later\, the vast majority of our children will fail to achieve their dreams and realize their full potential. The common grounds of all the skills that are needed and will be needed in an evolving world are the foundational skills of literacy and mathematics. None of us can tell what the job market will look like in 20 years\, but we know that strong foundations of literacy and mathematics will keep being the key to success. To make it into a slogan\, there is no STEM or STEAM without the M. \nIn this edWebinar\, Prof. Raz Kupferman discusses the interplay between rigor and engagement in developing deep conceptual understanding and cultivating curiosity in mathematics. He also discusses an approach to mathematical education that puts students at the intersection of encouragement and engagement where they confront ideas and problems that are meaningful. \nThis recorded edWebinar will be of interest to teachers and school and district leaders of the kindergarten through elementary levels.  \n \nAbout the Presenter \nProf. Raz Kupferman co-founded Matific in 2012\, and since then has been its Chief Scientist and Head of Pedagogy. McNulty\, President\, Successful Practices Network\, and Dr. Michael Conner\, Superintendent\, Middletown Public Schools (CT)\nModerated by Dr. Valerie Truesdale\, Assistant Executive Director\, AASA\, The School Superintendents Association \nHosted by AASA\, The School Superintendents Association \nAASA’s Leadership Network\, providing premier professional learning for educational leaders \nWatch the Recording Listen to the Podcast \nClosed captioning will be added to the recording within 2 weeks of the live presentation.\nGet a CE Certificate for this edWebinar Learn more \nSince mid-March 2020\, our daily routines have been ruled by a public health crisis unlike anything most of us have seen. We feel frustrated\, annoyed\, overwhelmed and unsure of what to do next. The normality in education has been shattered\, and while COVID-19 has been the catalyst for the process\, the changes both inside and outside of education have been constant over the last 20 years. The realities of COVID-19\, economic uncertainty and emphasis on systemic racism and inequities have brought school districts across the United States to a crossroads. Systems must learn to adapt with a future-focused vision and an ability to apply innovative principles and processes to their work. We are not powerless in this challenge; we must be the ones to act. \nIn this session\, Ray McNulty shares strategies and practices helpful to the challenges that leaders\, educators and students are facing. Schools and districts have never been more challenged in supporting the needs of students while navigating a world that is Volatile\, Uncertain\, Complex and Ambiguous (VUCA). One school district leading the way is Middletown Public Schools in Connecticut\, led by Dr. Michael Conner whose focus on building trust has enabled movement throughout the system. His emphasis has been centered on several important strategies\, polarity management\, professional learning\, systemic agility and many others. Action by leaders matters more now than ever before\, and just because the future is uncertain\, it doesn’t mean you can’t influence it. \nThis recorded presentation will be of particular value to school superintendents\, K-12 school and district leaders\, and aspiring leaders. \n \nAbout the Presenters \nRaymond J. McNulty is the president of the National Dropout Prevention Center (NDPC) and the Successful Practices Network (SPN). He is committed to raising performance standards for both teachers and students and to building solid connections between schools and their communities. Ray believes strongly that education systems cannot wait for the children and challenges to arrive at school; rather\, schools need to reach out and help forge solutions. \n  \n \nMichael T. Conner\, Ed.D. is the superintendent for Middletown Public Schools in Middletown\, CT. Previously\, he served as Chief Academic Officer (Norwalk\, CT)\, Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning (Willimantic\, CT) and Principal of Augusta Lewis Troup School (New Haven\, CT). SUMMARY:Science and Literacy Instruction: You Don’t Have to Choose
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Rebecca Abbott\, Professional Learning Lead\, UC Berkeley’s Lawrence Hall of Science \nSponsored by Amplify Science \nWatch the Recording\nClosed captioning will be added to the recording within 2 weeks of the live presentation.\nGet a CE Certificate for this edWebinar Learn more \nHow is a knowledge-rich curriculum essential for the development of literacy proficiency? How can making room for science in grades K-5 enable you to prepare your students to make sense of the world in which we live while strengthening their abilities to read\, write\, listen and speak? Join Rebecca Abbott from the University of California\, Berkeley’s Lawrence Hall of Science to explore the relationship between literacy and science instruction. \nIn this edWebinar\, Rebecca examines how the shifts in the science standards invite convergence with ELA and math. She shares research that shows how this can not only help strategically make room for science in packed instructional calendars but also results in more effective ways for students to learn both science and literacy. Attendees will see examples to help them envision how a focus on science can help achieve instructional goals in their classrooms and remotely. \nSo much of what scientists do is reading\, writing\, listening\, and speaking in order to obtain\, evaluate\, and communicate information about the natural world. To prepare the next generation of scientists and critical thinkers\, we need to combine what we know about excellent literacy instruction with what we know about excellent science instruction. Situating literacy instruction in a content area like science brings with it several benefits: \n\nIt helps students develop ways of thinking that are characteristic to the discipline.\nIt offers opportunities to refine sense-making skills that are essential to both disciplines.\nIt provides an authentic reason for reading and writing—to better understand science ideas under study.\n\nThis recorded  edWebinar will be of interest to kindergarten through middle school teachers\, librarians\, and school and district leaders.  \n \nAbout the Presenter \nRebecca Abbott is the professional learning lead for the Learning Design Group at UC Berkeley’s Lawrence Hall of Science. For the last seven years\, she has been providing support for teachers and district leaders implementing Learning Design Group approaches and curricula\, and currently leads the Hall’s professional learning efforts nationwide for their research-based and NGSS-designed curriculum\, Amplify Science. SUMMARY:10 Ways to Reimagine the Role of Educator as Literacy Leader
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Terrie Noland\, Ph.D.\, CALP\, Vice President\, Educator Initiatives\, Learning Ally \nSponsored by Learning Ally \nWatch the Recording\nClosed captioning will be added to the recording within 2 weeks of the live presentation.\nGet a CE Certificate for this edWebinar Learn more \nIn education\, the concept of “leader” is often reserved for administrators. This false concept has allowed many classroom teachers and specialists to assume they do not have a voice and capacity to impact and influence others. This edWebinar hones in on ten different leadership principles that will move an educator from a successful leader to a significant leader. \nSuccessful leadership says that you’ve accomplished something for yourself. Significant leadership says that you’ve made a significant impact on others. Transformational actions based on these ten principles\, such as understanding an influence framework and how to build relationship capital\, will impact teams to build collective efficacy. These principles might even challenge assumptions about what it means to lead for administrators and classroom educators by breaking the mold of leadership in education. \nViews will understand why literacy leadership matters in education. They will be introduced to the collective efficacy concept that supports the idea that everyone in a school or district can be involved in efforts to promote literacy. They’ll also identify which of the ten ways they could move toward significant literacy leadership that impacts struggling readers through an A.C.T. 24 model of action. \nThis recorded edWebinar will be of interest to preK-12 teachers\, librarians\, and school and district leaders. \n \nAbout the Presenter \nListen. Learn. Teach. It’s that simple. Terrie Noland uses this philosophy as an innovator and a motivator\, and it’s evident as she leads\, coaches and mentors thousands of K-12 educators about the science of reading each year. She has a unique perspective on the need to unify all stakeholders around a vision for education to smash the reading divide for the millions of struggling readers. Her daily mission is to add value to educators to help influence transformational changes in school districts across the country by addressing the needs of marginalized students. Terrie seeks to share her expertise and passion\, to encourage\, and to illuminate a path towards success and measurable outcomes. \nIf you looked at Terrie’s resume\, you would be confused. Her undergraduate and graduate degree work placed her in the field of criminal justice. However\, it was through continuous listening and learning that led her on a journey in education starting out in preschool teaching and administration\, then becoming a Certified Academic Language Practitioner (CALP)\, and currently working towards a Ph.D. in literacy and educational leadership from St. John’s University. Terrie is also a John Maxwell certified speaker and coach. \nAs Vice President of Educator Initiatives at Learning Ally\, Terrie works to ignite enthusiasm and excitement by building champion educators and administrators on creating cultures of literacy and learning. \nClosed captioning will be added to the recording within 2 weeks of the live presentation. \nJoin the Empowering Struggling Readers community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming edWebinars\, and view recordings of previous programs to earn CE certificates. \n\nLearning Ally is a leading education solutions organization committed to transforming the lives of struggling learners.
