SUMMARY:Reading Comprehension Starts with Sounds: Using Phonology to Connect Home Languages and English
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Antonio A. Fierro\, Ed.D.\, Vice President of Professional Learning and Academics\, 95 Percent Group; and Maya Goodall\, Chief Strategy Officer\, CORE Learning\nModerated by Kristie Shelley\, Chief Product Officer\, CORE Learning \nSponsored by CORE Learning \nWatch the RecordingListen to the Podcast \nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nLanguage systems are interconnected\, and for multilingual learners\, their home languages actively shape how they acquire English. Recognizing and building upon these connections is crucial to providing meaningful instruction. In this edWebinar with Dr. Antonio Fierro\, we explore how phonology—the study of speech sounds—strengthens structured literacy by tapping into these relationships. Through cross-linguistic transfer\, phonology helps students build on the strengths of their home languages\, enabling them to apply those skills to their English literacy development. \nDr. Fierro’s career focus on positionality—a well-known concept in cognitive science that explains how students juggle the cognitive demands of learning multiple languages—ties all of this work together. While widely recognized in research\, it hasn’t yet made its way into most classrooms. This session aims to change that. We show how positionality helps educators better recognize the connections between students’ languages and apply this understanding to structured literacy. \nIn this second session of CORE Learning’s Structured Literacy and Language Diversity Week: Fall ‘24 Series\, you gain practical\, evidence-based practices for using phonology and cross-linguistic transfer\, along with tools to advocate for policies that fully address the needs of multilingual learners. SUMMARY:Honoring Black Language: A Path to Inclusive and Effective Structured Literacy
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dr. Jasmine Rogers\, Adjunct Professor\, School of Education\, American University; and Maya Goodall\, Chief Strategy Officer\, CORE Learning\nModerated by Kristie Shelley\, Chief Product Officer\, CORE Learning \nSponsored by CORE Learning \nWatch the RecordingListen to the Podcast \nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nToo often\, Black Language is treated as something to “correct” rather than recognized as a legitimate language system with its own rules\, grammar\, and structure. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn from leading experts and enhance your understanding of effective literacy strategies. \n \n \nAbout the Presenters \nCarrie Willer\, PhD is the Director of Elementary Education for the Appleton Area School District\, the sixth largest public school district in Wisconsin. An experienced educator\, middle school assistant principal\, elementary principal and district administrator\, Carrie has supported student learning for over twenty-six years at the PreK-8 levels. In her district\, Carrie leads a variety of instructional teams\, to include: the district elementary literacy interventionists\, site coaches\, district coaches\, and district math interventionists and provides curriculum support to over 17 elementary schools in the areas of literacy\, math\, science\, and social studies. She was recognized for her Doctoral work and named the “Outstanding Doctorial Student.” Her dissertation on the Leadership and Managerial Needs of New Principals was selected for publication in Educational Leadership and she has led workshops on family engagement practices\, as well as weaving standards through interdisciplinary literacy at conventions in Wisconsin. \n \nUpon assuming her role as superintendent of the City Schools of Decatur on July 1\, 2023\, Dr. Gyimah Whitaker\, embarked on establishing a strong foundation to implement the district’s five-year strategic plan\, focusing on ensuring educational equity and success for all students. \nDr. Whitaker’s appointment was influenced by her successful tenure as Deputy Chief Academic Officer and Area Superintendent at Fulton County Schools (FCS). During her time at FCS\, she implemented a tiered autonomy system for school leaders\, which led to a significant decrease in failing schools from 16 to 2 in just three years. The two remaining schools were on the brink of being removed from state oversight before being disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. \nDr. Whitaker directed approximately one-third of FCS’s $262 million pandemic aid toward a structured literacy approach aimed at supporting the district’s academic recovery post-pandemic. The “Every Child Reads” initiative focused on training teachers and administrators in the science of reading methodology\, along with the addition of K-2 literacy coaches in all 60 elementary schools. This initiative aimed to provide all students an equal opportunity to maintain grade-level proficiency\, regardless of their socioeconomic background. The remarkable success of the initiative in FCS led to Dr. Whitaker being invited to testify before the Georgia House Education Committee\, which was considering the statewide adoption of “Every Child Reads.” Her testimony proved instrumental in the state’s legislation\, House Bill 538\, that session. \nPrior to her tenure at FCS\, at Atlanta Public Schools\, she served as Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning as well as Gifted Coordinator. Dr. Whitaker earned both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from The University of Pennsylvania and an Educational Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Georgia State University. She is the recipient of numerous awards\, and serves as a current and former board member for organizations that focus on our future\, the children. \n \nShanna Beber is the Executive Director of Literacy at the Louisiana Department of Education where she leads the literacy team in the development of the state’s comprehensive literacy strategy. Shanna has not only a deep passion for literacy but also for coaching teachers and leaders. This passion has led to the development of the Department’s literacy vision to have improved student literacy outcomes through high-quality instruction and interactions by an effective teacher supported by leaders and families. She prides herself on the progress Louisiana has made in such a short amount of time and is honored to lead the state’s literacy improvement work as they strive to provide every child with what they need to become a skilled reader. \n \nMarjorie Bottari is the Director of Content Development at Heggerty and an adjunct professor at DePaul University. An experienced teacher\, reading specialist\, reading coach\, and elementary administrator\, Marjorie has worked with a variety of grade levels from Pre-K-8. She holds a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Elmhurst College\, a master’s degree as a reading specialist from DePaul University\, and a master’s in educational leadership and administration from Benedictine University. Marjorie joined Heggerty in 2018 and is the co-author of Bridge the Gap 2025; Bridge to Reading\, Grade 3; and the Early Pre-Kindergarten curriculum. \nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nJoin the ELA Today community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming edWebinars\, and view recordings of previous programs to earn CE certificates. \n\n \nThe Heggerty Collection is your comprehensive solution for literacy education\, designed to empower educators and engage students. SUMMARY:Inspiring Curiosity and Connection with Nature: Discovering the Wonders Right Outside Your Door
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Joe Rackley\, Biological Consultant and Environmental Educator\, Guidecraft\nModerated by Laura Wilhelm\, Ed.D.\, VP of Professional Learning Services\, Kaplan Early Learning Company \nSponsored by Kaplan Early Learning Company \nWatch the Recording\nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nNature offers endless opportunities for discovery right at our doorstep—in the nearest tree\, bush\, or flower. Children take the time to explore and observe in ways many adults have forgotten\, reminding us of the joy and wonder that comes from slowing down and truly seeing the world around us. \nIn this engaging edWebinar\, we reconnect with nature through the lens of biology. You don’t need a doctorate to marvel at a pollinator at work\, wonder what creature left tracks in your flower bed\, or get curious about what could be growing in that strange ball on a leaf. When we take the time to notice\, we uncover the beauty\, complexity\, and stories hidden in the life around us—and perhaps rediscover something within ourselves too. \nAll organisms\, living and extinct\, are given names and assigned to families to help us better understand relationships and facilitate study around the globe. Understanding this naming protocol can help make sense of the species you and your students encounter. Whether you’re observing backyard wildlife or tackling classroom activities\, this knowledge empowers students to build deeper connections with the natural world. \nThis recorded edWebinar is of interest to PreK through elementary teachers. \n \n \nAbout the Presenter \nJoe Rackley is a Biological Consultant and Environmental Educator at Guidecraft. He grew up in rural Oklahoma exploring nature and hunting bottles in the remnants of a boom town. Joe has been a volunteer environmental educator and arts instructor during much of his career. Studying botany and zoology at a comprehensive research institution led to a first career as an academic advisor in zoology\, biology\, and wildlife and fisheries\, and later to a position as a student services director in a school of education in New York. He has spent the past 15 years in agriculture\, inspecting nursery plants and coordinating statewide surveys for invasive agricultural pests in Oklahoma. \n \nAbout the Moderator \nAs the Vice President for Professional Learning at Kaplan\, Laura Wilhelm\, Ed.D. draws on decades of experience teaching young children and early childhood professionals\, starting with toddlers in the 1980s\, followed by PreK-third grade in urban and suburban schools\, and as a university lab school director. Since earning her doctorate in ECE curriculum and instruction in 1999\, she has served as a program director\, full professor\, national validator for the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC)\, and a site visitor for the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Programs (CAEP). She enjoys planning professional development\, speaking at conferences\, leading study tours\, visiting early education programs around the world\, and returning home to her family. She is the author of The Neglected Child: How to Recognize\, Respond\, and Prevent (2013); Treasure Baskets: Heuristic Learning for Infants and Toddlers (2017); Enticing Environments for People Under Three (2021); and Living Loose Parts: Creatures of Curiosity (coming in 2024)\, all from Gryphon House. \nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nJoin the Classroom Management for Early Learning community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming edWebinars\, and view recordings of previous programs to earn CE certificates. \n\nFor more than 50 years\, Kaplan Early Learning Company has been a champion for play. From our research-based curricula to enriching classroom environments and innovative technology solutions\, Kaplan’s products and services inspire a lifelong love of learning in children and educators.
