SUMMARY:Free the Anxious Generation Movement: A Call for K-12 School Leaders
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dr. Jonathan Haidt\, Thomas Cooley Professor of Ethical Leadership at New York University’s Stern School of Business\, and Author of The Anxious Generation\nModerated by Jenn David-Lang\, Founder\, The Main Idea and School Leader Masterminds \nSponsored by Penguin Random House Education and Penguin Press \nWatch the RecordingListen to the Podcast \nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features.  \nAdolescents are in a mental health crisis. Major depressive episodes among American teens have more than doubled since 2010 as their social lives moved onto smartphones loaded with social media apps. The only available explanation for why this happened in many countries at the same time is that the ancient “play-based childhood” was replaced by the “phone-based childhood.” This “great rewiring of childhood” has interfered with children’s social and neurological development\, covering everything from sleep deprivation to attention fragmentation\, addiction\, loneliness\, social contagion\, social comparison\, and perfectionism. \nSchools and education departments can take the lead in setting new norms that will roll back the phone-based childhood and restore more free play and independence. In this edWebinar\, social psychologist Dr. Jonathan Haidt walks educators through the research on our urgent youth mental health crisis\, present four norms for collective action\, and outline what schools can do now to improve mental health for kids and teens. Viewers should consider what questions they have for Dr. Jonathan Haidt about the role of schools in dealing with social media\, phones\, and adolescent mental health issues. \nThis recorded edWebinar is of interest to K-12 teachers\, librarians\, school leaders\, district leaders\, education technology leaders\, and school counselors and psychologists. \n \n \nAbout the Presenter \nDr. Jonathan Haidt is a social psychologist at NYU’s Stern School of Business. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1992 and taught for 16 years at the University of Virginia. His research focuses on moral and political psychology. His latest book\, The Anxious Generation\, explores how the rise in youth mental health challenges is attributed to the transition from a play-based childhood to a phone-based childhood. Dr. Haidt is also the author of The Coddling of the American Mind (written with Greg Lukianoff)\, The Happiness Hypothesis\, and The Righteous Mind. He writes the After Babel Substack. \n \nAbout the Moderator \nJenn David-Lang has worked as a teacher\, school administrator\, consultant\, and founder of educational organizations for over 30 years. When she noticed that school leaders had little time for their own professional learning\, Jenn founded The Main Idea. Her subscribers receive a thorough book summary each month\, connecting them with the latest and most compelling ideas in education and leadership. Jenn also facilitates Masterminds (online groups of educational leaders learning together)\, leads workshops\, coaches educational leaders\, and conducts school evaluations. \nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nJoin the Mental Health and Wellness community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming edWebinars\, and view recordings of previous programs to earn CE certificates. \n\nAt Penguin Random House Education we believe that all children can learn to read. Access to books is the key to learning to read\, to read proficiently\, and with joy. It is our mission to foster a universal passion for reading by partnering with the greatest authors to create stories and communicate ideas that inform\, entertain\, and inspire students everywhere. \nDedicated to publishing quality nonfiction and literary fiction\, Penguin Press seeks to publish ideas that matter\, storytelling that lasts\, and books that don’t just start conversations\, but detonate them. How does it work? In this edWebinar\, we explore amplification from Les Paul’s early experiments to The Beatles’ struggles to be heard and ultimately consider why we should thank the tinkering scientists of the 1960s and 70s Grateful Dead entourage for many of the standard elements of how we experience live music today. \nTeachRock’s Bill Carbone and Gina Machado are joined by photographer Richard Pechner and craftsman Anthony Coscia\, builder of the internationally acclaimed Wall of Sound replica. Anthony’s work brings rich context and history to TeachRock’s resources. \nViewers explore hands-on science lessons that help students define and demonstrate sound through interactive activities\, as well as identify the basic components of a PA system by assembling a working loudspeaker. SUMMARY:The Power of Interactions: New Evidence for SEL Impact on Literacy Learning
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Carol D. Lee\, Ph.D.\, Edwina S. Tarry Professor of Education in the School of Education and Social Policy and in African-American Studies\, Northwestern University; Bridget Hamre\, Ph.D.\, CEO and Co-Founder\, Teachstone; David Adams\, CEO\, Urban Assembly; and Marnetta Larrimer\, Client Success Manager\, Teachstone \nSponsored by Teachstone \nWatch the RecordingListen to the Podcast \nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nMany educators understand that social-emotional learning (SEL) and academic development are connected\, but we often think of teaching literacy and building relationships with students as separate responsibilities. Time-strapped teachers have a lot on their plates as it is—delivering reading lessons\, helping struggling students\, and managing challenging behaviors—and it’s not always easy to balance both students’ emotional well-being and their academic progress. School leaders also face questions about how to measure this connection and put it into practice. \nIn this edWebinar\, we examine new research from the Collaborative for Academic\, Social\, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) on how SEL supports literacy development\, along with Teachstone’s evidence of meaningful adult-child interactions in the classroom. Experts discuss how SEL can boost literacy skills in early childhood and elementary grades and share strategies that leaders can use to support educators’ positive impact on their students. \nThis session is designed for early childhood leaders\, instructional coaches\, district leaders\, and childcare directors who are looking for practical ways to apply new research to support SEL and literacy development. \n \n \nAbout the Presenters \nCarol D. Lee\, Ph.D. is the Edwina S. Tarry Professor Emerita of Education at Northwestern University and President of the National Academy of Education. Dr. Hamre is a co-author of the Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS) and\, in partnership with Dr. Robert Pianta\, led the use of CLASS to scale as an assessment and professional development tool nationwide. She collaborates with the Office of Head Start on their CLASS implementation as a part of the federal monitoring process and consults with numerous states on their Quality Rating and Improvement Systems. Dr. Hamre received her bachelor’s degree from the University of California\, Berkeley\, and her master’s degree and doctorate in clinical and school psychology from the University of Virginia. \n \nDavid Adams is the Chief Executive Officer of the Urban Assembly (UA). He started in 2014 as the Director of Social-Emotional Learning\, where he created the Resilient Scholars Program (RSP)\, integrating SEL into curriculum and classroom practices across the UA network. RSP has grown into a national program\, serving schools and districts in Los Angeles\, Houston\, Syracuse\, and beyond. In 2022\, David was named one of Crain’s 40 Under 40 honorees and in 2021 he received the Champion of Equity Award from the American Consortium for Equity in Education.
