SUMMARY:Nature-Based Emergent Curriculum: The Power of Place for Planning

Many educators find themselves wanting to jump in wholeheartedly. Yet\, it’s not always clear where to start or what even counts as “nature.” When planning\, we can consider how we bring nature inside\, how we accomplish curricular goals outside\, and how we connect children’s learning across the three spaces of the Inside\, Outside\, and Beyond. \nThis edWebinar first explores the fundamental principles of the nature-based approach. Then\, Dr. Rachel Larimore explores how we can live these principles in day-to-day teaching practices—especially if the goal is an emergent curriculum rooted in play and children’s interests. By focusing on the seasonal events that occur in our local place in the world\, we can intentionally integrate nature into teaching practice—no matter our current situation. This session addresses the theory and specific strategies related to: \n\nIdentifying predictable natural and cultural events from year to year\nPreparing the physical environment to facilitate nature play\nMaking more intentional connections between outdoor and indoor learning\nPreparing teacher-led activities that build off of children’s experiences and interests\n\nViewers leave this edWebinar with tangible ideas that can be implemented the next day as well as some ideas that can be worked toward into the future. When teachers and students come from different linguistic and cultural backgrounds\, the language we choose can become a bridge. Our classrooms are vibrant communities where diverse languages and cultures meet. CORE Learning’s Maya Goodall leads a conversation with Dr. Lillian Ardell\, founder of Language Matters\, as they discuss the power of the metalanguage mindset for teachers in language-diverse classrooms and how small changes in how we talk and listen can make a big difference. \nIn this first session of CORE Learning’s Structured Literacy and Language Diversity Week: Spring ’24 Series\, learn how a metalanguage mindset can help you: \n\nConnect Deeply with Students: Learn how to consciously use language that positively frames linguistic diversity as an asset.\nIdentify and Reduce Biases: Spot and mitigate unconscious linguistic biases to create a more fair and welcoming classroom.\nImplement Inclusive Teaching Practices: Ensure every student receives the instruction they need and deserve.\n\nThis recorded edWebinar is of interest to PreK-12 teachers\, school leaders\, and district leaders. \n\n \n \nAbout the Presenters \nDr. Lillian Ardell is a trailblazer in bilingual education who is deeply committed to changing how we teach languages.
