SUMMARY:When Science and Health Misinformation Go Viral: How to Help Students Find Facts
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dr. Melissa Clarke\, Physician\, Author\, Speaker\, and Patient Advocate; and Brittney Smith\, Senior Manager of Education Partnerships\, News Literacy Project \nSponsored by News Literacy Project \nWatch the Recording\nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nScience and health misinformation is contagious—don’t let it go viral among your students! \nAs we continue to heal from a global pandemic\, falsehoods presented as fact remain an issue in digital spaces such as social media. It is hard for young people to know what to believe\, and misinformation confuses us all about the best steps to take for our own and our community’s health. Further\, long histories of unfair and biased reporting and inhumane research practices have left certain communities often targeted by misinformation (with a distrust of news organizations and scientists\, as well). Join us to learn about some of these past examples of misinformation’s impact on targeted communities. Then\, explore steps you can take to help students avoid misleading claims and build confidence in making health decisions rooted in fact. \nIn this edWebinar\, Brittney Smith of the News Literacy Project hosts a panel conversation with special guests. They discuss how to recognize when communities are being treated unfairly and share free resources for teaching your students tips to avoid falling for science and health misinformation. Relevant interdisciplinary lessons from the Checkology®️ virtual classroom—including Be Health Informed and Harm & Distrust—is introduced\, along with ideas for incorporating the lessons into your curriculum during Black History Month and beyond. \nThis recorded edWebinar is of interest to K-12 teachers as well as school and district leaders. \n \n \nAbout the Presenters \nDr. Melissa E. Anytime we got an assignment\, we’d race to get the CliffsNotes that demystified expectations. These days\, instruction that once filled secondary school classrooms has moved into the upper elementary grades\, and kids are even more mystified—and more pressured\, too\, as writing about reading has become high stakes. \nIn this edWebinar\, Dr. Lucy Calkins\, one of the world’s foremost teachers of writing\, equips you to bring your kids along a logical cross-grade progression of instruction on writing literary essays so that you equip all your students with the skills they need to write insightful essays\, including essays on characters\, relationships\, themes\, and author’s craft. \nJess Mazzone and Katy Wischow\, two co-authors of the soon-to-be-released Units of Study in Writing\, follow this work by sharing high-leverage small groups and a set of potent tools that together can help your students explore the fine points of effective essays\, learning about evidence\, detail\, symbolism\, sentence complexity\, and the like. \nFinally\, you see how all of this can help your students feel ready for the expectations of state tests. This recorded edWebinar is of interest to elementary teachers and school and district leaders. \n \n \nAbout the Presenters \nDr. Lucy Calkins is the Founding Director of The Reading and Writing Project at Mossflower. IS possible and is absolutely worth the investment. Because challenging behavior is…challenging and resistant to change\, many schools resort to containing\, ignoring\, or removing students without actually addressing underlying needs and developing missing skills.
