SUMMARY:The Power of Home Libraries: What Does the Research Show?
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dwaine Millard\, SVP\, National Sales & Partnerships\, Scholastic; and Lindsay Marczak\, Senior Director of Research\, Scholastic \nSponsored by Scholastic Education Solutions \nWatch the Recording\nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nIn the wake of COVID-19\, educators\, communities\, and families are doing all they can to combat its toll on student learning. Especially among children in low-socioeconomic areas. To do so\, schools and homes need every resource possible\, particularly those that make a big impact with a small investment. \nHome libraries are powerful\, purposeful\, and productive. When built by educators and students\, they deliver an undeniable bang for a book. They rival programs that need more expense and manpower. Books at home reduce student learning loss\, increase reading skills\, and engage families. SUMMARY:Measuring Success: Defining Quality Education for Multilingual Students
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dr. José Viana\, Senior Education Advisor\, Lexia Learning; Breanna Guzman\, Senior Language Product Specialist\, Lexia Learning; Dr. Linda Cavazos\, Executive Director\, ELLAS Consulting (English Learner Leadership Advocacy Support); and Martha Hernandez\, Executive Director\, Californians Together\nModerated by Cassandra Wheeler\, Director of Lexia LETRS® State Success\, Lexia Learning \nSponsored by Lexia Learning \nWatch the RecordingListen to the Podcast \nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nEmergent bilingual students need different academic supports and structures than their monolingual peers\, and many educators have to rely on instructional models designed for students who already speak English—leading to a disconnect for our ELL students. Ensuring all emergent bilingual and multilingual students have access to a quality education first requires defining what that education looks like. \nLexia Learning’s Cassandra Wheeler (Director of LETRS State Success) and Breanna Guzman (Senior Language Product Specialist) with Dr. Linda Cavazos (Executive Director of ELLAS Consulting) and Martha Hernandez (Executive Director of Californians Together) broke down what a quality education for emergent bilinguals looks like\, diving deeper into how second languages are learned\, where and how that learning occurs\, and how teachers themselves learn and develop as expert professionals. \nIn this session\, viewers gain understanding of the value oral discourse brings to literacy learning\, how to implement effective ELD practices across districts\, schools\, and classrooms\, and useful resources for creating language frames on a practical level. \nThis recorded edLeader Panel is of interest to PreK-12 teachers\, ELL and ESOL specialists\, librarians\, school and district leaders\, and education technology leaders. \nThis edLeader Panel is part of Emergent Bilingual Week: A New Era in Multilingualism. \nThis five-day event\, October 23rd – 27th was designed to inspire educators and leaders in service of our 5 million+ multilingual students across the country. SUMMARY:A Revolution in PK-2 Literacy: Invest in Prevention and Do Less Intervention
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Floyd Jolley\, Director of Curriculum\, Peach County Schools (GA); Luis Quan\, Principal\, P.S. 126X Dr. Marjorie H. Dunbar Elementary School (NY); and Libba Reed\, Regional Literacy Coach\, University Charter School (AL)\nModerated by Jeanette Russell\, VP of Customer Success\, Capit Learning \nSponsored by Capit Learning \nWatch the RecordingListen to the PodcastRead the Article \nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nFor years\, schools have predominantly focused on a core ELA curriculum complemented by an intervention program. However\, mounting evidence suggests this approach has been less effective than anticipated. Many schools are shifting their focus and implementing a dedicated core phonics curriculum that seamlessly complements their existing ELA framework. \nTransitioning to a preventive model can pave the way for a more robust\, comprehensive literacy foundation. Ensuring students receive essential phonics instruction early on significantly reduces the need for later interventions\, translating into better student outcomes and more efficient resource allocation. Join us for this eye-opening edLeader Panel as we: \n\nExamine the inefficiencies and pitfalls of the traditional core ELA + intervention strategy\nShowcase empirical data that underlines the transformative potential of integrating a core phonics curriculum\nIllustrate real-world success stories where schools have reduced the need for intervention through proactive phonics-based approaches\n\nViewers: \n\nUnderstand the long-term benefits and cost efficiencies of prioritizing prevention over intervention\nGain insight into the design and structure of an effective core phonics curriculum\nReceive actionable strategies to integrate phonics instruction within the existing ELA framework\n\nA special literacy grant offer will be given to viewers. The grant gives educators access to the CAPIT Reading Curriculum and Teacher Professional Development to help ensure their first-grade students gain a solid foundation in literacy. \nThis recorded edLeader Panel is of interest to PreK-2 teachers\, curriculum directors\, ELA coordinators\, and school and district leaders. \n \n \nAbout the Presenters \nFloyd Jolley serves as the director of curriculum at Peach County Schools in Georgia.
