SUMMARY:Let’s Explore Effect Size with John Hattie: How We Impact Schools with Researched Thinking
DESCRIPTION:Presented by John Hattie\, Professor\, Melbourne Graduate School of Education; Brendan Scribner\, Director of Implementation and Success\, Exemplars; and Jay Meadows\, CEO\, Exemplars \nSponsored by Exemplars \nWatch the RecordingListen to the Podcast \nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \n“Featuring special guest speaker John Hattie.” \nEducators are managing challenging workloads and are susceptible to high rates of burnout. Join us as we examine practices that have a positive impact in schools. Professor John Hattie helps us lean into extensive research around how to de-implement practices that just aren’t effective\, and replace them with cost-effective\, high-yield moves to transform your classroom\, school\, and district. This edWebinar explores the following questions: \n\nWhat is effect size? How can effect size shape pedagogy?\nResearch suggests that the process of schooling is often overengineered. How does that give us permission to dial back\, carefully?\nWhat are some steps in the process for deciding which initiatives are most effective—and how do we let go of the ones that are not?\nHow can we offer useful tools\, templates\, and charts that educators can immediately use with de-implementation work at school\, in teaching teams\, or at the system level that improve student learning?\nIf you were starting a new school\, what practices would you suggest they lean into?\n\nThis edWebinar is of interest to K-12 teachers and school and district leaders. \n\n \n \nAbout the Presenters \nProfessor John Hattie of the University of Melbourne\, Australia\, has long researched performance indicators and evaluation in education. His research\, Visible Learning\, is the culmination of more than 25 years of examining and synthesizing more than 2\,100 meta-analyses comprising more than 132\,000 studies involving 300 million students around the world. \nProfessor Hattie wanted to understand which variables were the most important. Although “almost everything we do improves learning\,” why not prioritize the ones that will have the greatest effect? He set about calculating a score or “effect size” for each\, according to its bearing on student learning and taking into account such aspects as its cost to implement. The average effect size was 0.4\, a marker that represented a year’s growth per year of schooling for a student. Visible Learning+ professional learning enables schools and districts around the world to effectively implement the core findings of the Visible Learning research. \n \nBrendan Scribner\, Director of Implementation and Success for Exemplars\, began his career in education as a middle school math teacher in Vermont in 1998\, before spending the last 20 years as a fourth-grade classroom teacher in Hanover\, New Hampshire. He earned his master’s in the science of teaching mathematics from the Vermont Math Initiative. As a passionate classroom educator\, he strives to be a mathematical identity builder with a keen focus on learning experiences that cultivate wonder and joy and reveal the beauty of mathematics for all. Brendan supports educators at Exemplars\, with a strong commitment to building contextually relevant problem solving into established curricula. An area of particular importance in his work is the power of productive discourse and how “talk moves” within a classroom. When he is not immersed in his work as an educator\, he enjoys family time\, cycling\, hiking\, skiing\, leisure travel\, and crafting unique wood products. \n \nJay Meadows serves as Exemplars’ Chief Executive Officer. He is a former middle school math and science teacher and has been working in education for almost three decades. Jay holds a Master of Arts in Teaching from the University of Vermont and a master’s in mathematical pedagogy from Southern New Hampshire University. \nJay is also one of Exemplars’ primary performance task writers and professional development consultants for the middle level. Leading sessions throughout the United States\, Jay works with teachers to integrate performance tasks and research-based best practices into their curricula. Through Exemplars\, Jay dreams of teaching a generation of students to become powerful problem solvers. Prior to his career in education\, Jay coordinated delegations from the former Soviet Union through programs with the U.S. State Department. Jay has also worked alongside a number of international non-profits and is a former Peace Corps Volunteer. \n\nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nJoin the Creating a Positive School Climate community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming edWebinars\, and view recordings of previous programs to earn CE certificates. \n\n \nExemplars provides performance tasks\, rubrics\, and student anchor papers for schools and districts in Math\, Science\, and Writing. Our performance material engages students and promotes reasoning\, communication\, and higher-order thinking. Performance tasks are classroom-tested and may be used for assessment\, instruction\, and professional development. SUMMARY:Raising Reading Scores\, Restoring Educators: Achieving Equitable Reading Outcomes Through Family Engagement
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Amanda Hamilton Roos\, Former Educator\, Current Senior Director\, Learning Design\, Family Educator Partnerships\, Springboard Collaborative \nSponsored by Springboard Collaborative \nWatch the Recording\nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nToo often\, educators feel crushed by the challenge of dramatically impacting student reading outcomes all by themselves. Their jobs feel unwinnable\, leading to an annual cycle of stress and burnout. District leaders feel similarly frustrated. They invest in promising practices and interventions\, but reading scores hardly budge. Achievement gaps widen between historically marginalized students and their white peers. But there’s an alternative path hiding in plain sight. \nIn this edWebinar\, viewers leave with concrete tips to transform reading outcomes by engaging families as partners in teaching and learning. Designed for both educators and administrators looking for new approaches to supporting young readers\, viewers also learn about solutions that can help embed family-educator collaboration into core district practice. \nThis recorded edWebinar is of interest to PreK-3 teachers and school and district leaders. \n \nAbout the Presenter \nOver the past 20 years\, Amanda Hamilton Roos taught in public schools\, private schools\, community centers\, and libraries. She’s written hundreds of pages of literacy curricula\, published numerous articles on family engagement\, and sent passionate letters to school boards. But she’s also sat at the kitchen table and battled homework with her three children\, and she knows the angst of seeing your child struggle to read. So\, for Amanda\, the work to help teachers and families form partnerships is not abstract. Amanda holds a BA from Duke University where she discovered her passion for literature and education. As she leads the team that designs resources for teachers and families at Springboard Collaborative\, she hopes to instill a love for learning to read in all adults. \nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nJoin the Be a Literacy Hero community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming edWebinars\, and view recordings of previous programs to earn CE certificates. \n\nSpringboard Collaborative helps districts bring families and educators together to drive reading gains at scale for PreK-4th graders. Partners choose to implement Springboard as a high-impact tutoring program\, an afterschool foundational reading supplement\, or as a robust summer reading program.

We guide educators to practice\, apply\, and embody mindfulness in their day-to-day interactions so they can nurture social and emotional well-being\, strengthen relationships\, and help all students thrive. \nMindfulness is a simple\, accessible\, and profound entry point for addressing the disconnect between what overwhelmed educators know and what they have capacity to do. Through our courses\, curriculum\, and consulting work\, we support school leaders to make a lasting change. Together\, educators learn to manage stress\, become aware of and address bias\, create trauma-sensitive classrooms\, and cultivate resilient communities of belonging\, inclusion\, and well-being.

SUMMARY:The Knowledge Gap: How It Affects Reading Performance and How to Fix It
DESCRIPTION:Presented by John Carroll\, GM\, K12 Curriculum Services; and Natalie Wexler\, Consultant and Author \nSponsored by XanEdu\, a Scholarus Learning Company \nWatch the RecordingListen to the Podcast \nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nOur students’ performance on the whole on national reading tests has not improved over the past two decades (NAEP\, 2023). More troubling\, the gap in scores between socioeconomic groups has remained stubbornly wide. \nRecent reform efforts have focused on improving instruction in phonics and other foundational skills. That’s crucial\, but the evidence indicates it’s not enough. We also need to change our approach to reading comprehension to take account of a key factor that has long been overlooked: knowledge. \nSome students are better able to acquire knowledge of the world outside of school beginning at birth\, enabling them to read more complex text. Others rely on school for that kind of knowledge. If they don’t start acquiring it early\, the gap between “good” and “poor” readers only grows wider as grades go up. \nView this edWebinar to hear Natalie Wexler\, education journalist and author of The Knowledge Gap: The Hidden Cause of America’s Broken Education System—and How to Fix It\, share the research along with her insights and perspectives on how we can give all students access to the kind of knowledge that enables reading comprehension—and learning in general. \nThis recorded edWebinar is of interest to K-12 teachers\, librarians\, and school and district leaders and is part of the Leading by Design: 6 Initiatives You Can’t Afford to Get Wrong district leadership series where you learn from leaders who are pulling together the elements of successful schooling. \n\n \nAbout the Presenters \nJohn Carroll joined XanEdu\, now a part of the Scholarus Learning group of companies\, as the GM\, K12 Curriculum Services.
