Why do some classrooms experience more learning loss than others? View this edLeader Panel for an evidence-based discussion to learn how principals\, teachers\, and curriculum leaders can develop a culture of thinking to transform student performance and engagement. \nKey takeaways from this session include: \n\nWhat thinking is and what it’s not\nHow thinking moves form routines and mindsets\nCommon curriculum and instructional barriers to student thinking\nAdministrative “look-fors” that bring a culture of thinking into focus\n\nThe panelists use K-8 science as a context for discussion\, exploring ties between thinking and new performance-based standards such as the Next Generation Science Standards\, using elements of KnowAtom’s evidence-based core science curriculum designed for K-8 Next Generation Science Standards in adaptive and adoptive states. \nThis recorded edLeader Panel is of interest to K-8 curriculum administrators\, principals\, teachers\, and instructional coaches. \nAbout the Presenters \nDr. Ron Ritchhart is a world-renowned educator\, researcher\, and author. For over 25 years\, Dr. Ritchhart served as a Senior Research Associate and Principal Investigator at Project Zero at the Harvard Graduate School of Education where his research focused on understanding how to develop\, nurture\, and sustain “cultures of thinking” for both students and teachers. After leaving Harvard in 2021\, Dr. Ritchhart has continued his classroom- and school-based research and writing to further the ideas of visible thinking and the creation of schools as cultures of thinking. Dr. Ritchhart’s ability to seamlessly merge theory\, research\, practice\, and application together in a highly accessible and engaging manner has made him a best-selling author of numerous books including Intellectual Character\, Making Thinking Visible\, Creating Cultures of Thinking\, The Power of Making Thinking Visible\, and his highly anticipated new book\, Cultures of Thinking in Action. \nFrancis Vigeant\, KnowAtom’s Founder and CEO\, is a former public K-12 science\, engineering\, and math teacher\, top-performing in New Hampshire statewide testing. They nurture student creativity and shape the next generation of problem solvers. But all teachers achieve more with complete resources and support. That’s where we come in. As teachers ourselves\, we believe creative\, evaluative\, and analytical thinking skills prepare all students for any college or career choice. And STEM disciplines are the perfect venue for learning these skills hands-on. With KnowAtom\, students are scientists and engineers. They investigate real-world phenomena and learn how to solve problems and answer questions for themselves. KnowAtom provides schools with K-8 curriculum and materials designed for the Next Generation Science Standards. Plus you’ll never have to shop for materials again — we deliver all the hands-on resources you need right to your classroom. So what are you waiting for? We’re here to help. Learn More About KnowAtom. \n \nThe Worldwide Cultures of Thinking Project began with two frameworks. The first was the 8 Cultural Forces\, a framework that helps to illuminate the building blocks of group culture. The second was the framework\, in the form of the Understanding Map\, for understanding what we mean by thinking. These frameworks\, and the associated tools we have developed around them\, are important vehicles for teachers and schools to leverage as they embark on creating robust cultures of thinking. \nOur current research in the Worldwide Cultures of Thinking Project has focused on identifying these mindsets/stances. They represent 10 guiding principles that propel the development of a culture of thinking. Thus\, we call this current line of research\, Cultures of Thinking in Action. We present these principles along with an accompanying theory of action that ties actions to outcomes. We also present a collection of resources\, tools\, actions\, and practices.

In this edWebinar\, we explore practical strategies and approaches to establish an engaging\, student-centered\, and self-paced learning environment specifically tailored to early elementary grades. \nJoin us as we dive into the key principles and practices of the self-paced classroom for early elementary education. This recorded edWebinar is of interest to PreK-3 teachers\, school and district leaders\, and education technology leaders. \n\nAbout the Presenters \nMarlene Tapia-Garcia was born and raised in Mexico. Her mother is also an educator. Marlene graduated from National Louis University with a major in early childhood education and a bilingual endorsement. She has been fortunate to be exposed to multiple multicultural experiences. The opportunity to live abroad opened her eyes to different cultural practices of people from around the world. While living in Europe for three years\, Marlene developed a love for languages that continues to this day. As she learned Portuguese and French\, she enjoyed the opportunities to connect with locals who welcomed her in their communities. Marlene’s goal is to share her excitement for learning languages and desire to understand different cultures with her students. She enjoys spending time with her friends\, watching foreign movies\, and visiting her family in Mexico. \n\nTeaching and working with kids has been a lifelong passion for Melissa White; however\, she took the scenic route to make it her career. After careers in residential design and financial planning\, she spent a month volunteering in a Russian orphanage where she decided it was finally time to pursue her master’s degree in education. She’s spent the past ten years teaching grades K\, 1\, 2\, 3\, and 6 in three states (with kindergarten and first grade being favorites). She is currently a kindergarten teacher—which is what she told her mom she was going to do when she was five years old. In her free time\, she loves to travel and immerse herself in other cultures. She also enjoys volunteering\, reading\, making jewelry\, photography\, and doing jigsaw puzzles. \n\nJodie Hopkins (she/her) is a passionate educator who started her educational journey in the early childhood classroom\, refusing to leave until her mentor explained that to help all students it was best to see the whole rainbow of a child’s educational journey. She reluctantly moved on to serve as an educator in elementary school\, as an ECE Director\, District ECE Supervisor\, and Instructional Coach\, and this year returned to the classroom with upper elementary students so that she can fully implement MCP in her own laboratory. When not learning more about education\, you can find her reading voraciously\, doing science in search of her perfect cup of coffee\, attempting not to kill her plants\, or crafting something fun but rarely purposeful. She has a BA in English with a focus on elementary education\, a minor in early childhood education\, and an MA in educational leadership. \n\nAbout the Moderator \nToni Rose Deanon (she/they) is a former English and ESL educator with 10 years of experience teaching in Atlanta\, Baltimore City\, and D.C. They were also an instructional coach in Redmond and currently facilitate professional development for educators all over the world. They will forever identify as an educator and a lifetime learner. Toni Rose strives to be the educator that they never had growing up\, so they focus on anti-bias\, anti-racist work and want to create a brave space for everyone around them. As a queer Filipino\, they understand just how important it is to be represented\, be valued\, and belong. They especially love being a thought partner for and celebrating educators. \n\nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nJoin the Engaging Early Learners community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming edWebinars\, and view recordings of previous programs to earn CE certificates. \n\nThe Modern Classrooms Project empowers educators to implement a self-paced\, mastery-based instructional model that leverages technology to foster human connection\, authentic learning\, and social-emotional growth.

SUMMARY:Success in Reading\, Success in Life: Connecting the Neuroscience of Reading and Resilience
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Kerri Larkin\, Senior Education Advisor\, Lexia; and Horacio Sanchez\, President and CEO\, Resiliency\, Inc. \nSponsored by Lexia Learning \nWatch the RecordingListen to the Podcast \nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nUnderstanding “The Reading Brain” can help educators enormously in their implementation of Science-of-Reading-based instructional strategies and student support. Yet\, academics alone are not enough to accelerate learning. We need students who are supported in all aspects of their development to achieve success. \nWe often use the term “resilience” to describe how students overcome challenges in the pursuit of academic success. While this mental and emotional elasticity is touted as a positive skill\, is it really the answer for students\, or do we need to dig deeper into the systems and structures that require this resilience while offering research-backed\, effective instruction? \nView this edWebinar with Lexia’s Senior Education Advisor\, Kerri Larkin\, and Resiliency\, Inc.’s President and CEO\, Horacio Sanchez\, as they discuss brain function during reading\, the role resilience plays in education\, and how the Science of Reading can support learning for all students. You learn about brain processes during reading\, what resilience is and how it is often misused\, and how educators can activate the Science of Reading to better serve their students. \nThis recorded edWebinar is of interest to PreK-12 teachers\, school and district leaders\, and education technology leaders. \n\nAbout the Presenters \nKerri Larkin brings more than 20 years of special education experience to her role as Senior Education Advisor.
