SUMMARY:Creating Equitable Early Learning Programs
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dr. Ebonyse P. Mead\, President\, Educational Equity Institute; and Dr. Tameka Ardrey\, Founder\, Bridging the Gap Early Education Consulting\nModerated by Jennifer Lewis\, President\, Gryphon House\, Inc. \nSponsored by Gryphon House \nWatch the Recording\nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nAddressing the unique learning needs of culturally diverse students requires a paradigm shift in the way we teach and care for young children. Adopting anti-racist perspectives and anti-bias pedagogies allows early childhood educators\, leaders\, and policymakers to create equitable early learning environments that are responsive to the needs of culturally diverse learners. By the end of this edWebinar\, viewers are able to: \n\nIdentify inequities in early childhood that impact the outcomes of children of color\nExplain the rationale for creating equitable early learning programs\nDescribe the importance of culturally responsive family engagement in early childhood\nIdentify ways to incorporate culturally responsive anti-bias practices to improve instruction and promote positive racial identity development\n\nCreating equitable learning programs requires teachers\, administrators\, and support staff to have a deep understanding of the racial inequities that children of color experience. To do that\, educators must deconstruct anti-Black racism and whiteness in educational settings as these concepts serve as the root causes of the racial disparities and biases present within early childhood education. As early childhood professionals concerned with the well-being of the whole child\, we have a responsibility to create learning environments where all children feel affirmed\, safe\, and welcome regardless of their skin color\, hair texture\, language\, socioeconomic background\, etc. \nThis recorded edWebinar is of interest to early childhood teachers\, librarians\, school and district leaders\, education technology leaders\, and other professionals working with young children and families. \nAbout the Presenters \nEbonyse Mead\, Ed.D. is the President of the Educational Equity Institute. SUMMARY:Advice for Navigating Challenging Conversations in Early Childhood Programs
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Angela Searcy\, Ed.D.\, Author\, Adjunct Instructor\, and Mental Health Consultant\, Erikson Institute and Simple Solutions Educational Services\nModerated by Jennifer Lewis\, President\, Gryphon House\, Inc. \nSponsored by Gryphon House \nWatch the Recording\nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nIf you think perfect harmony is the essential characteristic of quality early childhood programming\, research shows otherwise. A study by Andrew Gianino and Edward Tronick (1988) showed that even the most positive relationships are in perfect harmony 30 percent of the time and spend the other 70 percent of the time navigating conflict. Conflict is an essential part of the human condition (not adult aggression\, intimidation\, or abuse—in those situations\, emergency measures should be employed). \nIn this edWebinar\, Angela Searcy\, Ed.D. discusses navigating equity issues like equally divvying up lesson-planning responsibilities\, quarrels with families over how much homework is too much\, disagreements over professional responsibilities around supporting identity development\, curriculum implementation\, and parental responsibilities when a child has a disability. This session helps you capitalize on these opportunities to better understand yourself\, your colleagues\, and the families you serve. Dr. Searcy’s Push Past It! framework provides strategies to understand your unique conflict style and concrete tools (like the adult meaning making machine) to help you get through conflict so you can elevate equity. \nThis recorded edWebinar is of interest to early childhood teachers\, librarians\, school and district leaders\, and education technology leaders. \nAbout the Presenters \nDr. Angela Searcy holds a B.A. degree in English and secondary education with a teacher certification through the state of Illinois\, an M.S. degree in early childhood development from Erikson Institute with a specialization in infant studies\, and a Doctor of Education with a specialization in assessment and response to intervention. Her research revolves around brain-based learning as assessed by CLASS and its correlation to aggressive behaviors in preschool children. Dr. Searcy has a developmental therapy credential through the early intervention systems of Illinois and an Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health Certificate from Erikson Institute. \nAn educator since 1990\, Dr. Searcy is the owner and founder of Simple Solutions Educational Services and has experience at all levels of education. Dr. Searcy is currently a seminar leader and adjunct faculty at Erikson Institute\, a professional development provider for Discovery Source\, a CLASS Pre-K Affiliate Trainer for Teachstone\, a mental health and educational consultant\, and the author of Push Past It! For over 25 years\, Dr. Ritchhart served as a Senior Research Associate and Principal Investigator at Project Zero at the Harvard Graduate School of Education where his research focused on understanding how to develop\, nurture\, and sustain “cultures of thinking” for both students and teachers. After leaving Harvard in 2021\, Dr. Ritchhart has continued his classroom- and school-based research and writing to further the ideas of visible thinking and the creation of schools as cultures of thinking. Dr. Ritchhart’s ability to seamlessly merge theory\, research\, practice\, and application together in a highly accessible and engaging manner has made him a best-selling author of numerous books including Intellectual Character\, Making Thinking Visible\, Creating Cultures of Thinking\, The Power of Making Thinking Visible\, and his highly anticipated new book\, Cultures of Thinking in Action. \nFrancis Vigeant\, KnowAtom’s Founder and CEO\, is a former public K-12 science\, engineering\, and math teacher\, top-performing in New Hampshire statewide testing. They nurture student creativity and shape the next generation of problem solvers. But all teachers achieve more with complete resources and support. That’s where we come in. As teachers ourselves\, we believe creative\, evaluative\, and analytical thinking skills prepare all students for any college or career choice. And STEM disciplines are the perfect venue for learning these skills hands-on. With KnowAtom\, students are scientists and engineers. They investigate real-world phenomena and learn how to solve problems and answer questions for themselves. KnowAtom provides schools with K-8 curriculum and materials designed for the Next Generation Science Standards. Plus you’ll never have to shop for materials again — we deliver all the hands-on resources you need right to your classroom. So what are you waiting for? We’re here to help. Learn More About KnowAtom. \n \nThe Worldwide Cultures of Thinking Project began with two frameworks. The first was the 8 Cultural Forces\, a framework that helps to illuminate the building blocks of group culture. The second was the framework\, in the form of the Understanding Map\, for understanding what we mean by thinking. These frameworks\, and the associated tools we have developed around them\, are important vehicles for teachers and schools to leverage as they embark on creating robust cultures of thinking. \nOur current research in the Worldwide Cultures of Thinking Project has focused on identifying these mindsets/stances. They represent 10 guiding principles that propel the development of a culture of thinking. Thus\, we call this current line of research\, Cultures of Thinking in Action. We present these principles along with an accompanying theory of action that ties actions to outcomes. We also present a collection of resources\, tools\, actions\, and practices.
