SUMMARY:Show\, Solve\, and Explain: What’s the Difference Between Doing Math and Using Math?
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Jay Meadows\, CEO\, Exemplars; and Glen Warren\, Director of Literacies\, Outreach\, and Libraries\, Encinitas Union School District (CA)\nModerated by Alaina Cioffi\, Director of Sales\, Exemplars \nSponsored by Exemplars \nWatch the Recording\nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nHow we teach is based on our philosophy of how the brain learns. Asking students to move beyond getting the right answers in our math classrooms can have a profound impact on their ability to become flexible thinkers and effective problem solvers. These expectations also lead to dramatic differences in learning outcomes for students\, including measurable outcomes on their end-of-year assessments. \nUsing performance tasks\, we explore how asking students to engage in rich mathematical problem solving and justify their conclusions with language\, representations\, and calculations creates neural networks between four distinct regions of the brain. Watch as we uncover a strategy for developing deep and lasting mathematical understanding for all students: solution writing. In this edWebinar\, you learn: \n\nThe difference between doing math and using math\nWhat mathematics looks like in the brain\nWhat types of problems inspire students to use mathematics\nHow use of a consistent rubric can drive teacher and student focus beyond calculations to deeper conceptual understanding and transfer\nHow to inspire students to construct their own understanding versus simply giving them algorithms\nResearch that supports this learner-centered approach\n\nThis recorded edWebinar is of interest to teachers\, school and district leaders\, and math coaches of the elementary and middle school levels. \n\nAbout the Presenters \nJay Meadows serves as Exemplars’ Chief Executive Officer. SUMMARY:Oral and Written Language: Understanding the Differences and Implications for Teaching
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Claude Goldenberg\, Ph.D.\, Nomellini & Olivier Professor of Education\, Emeritus\, Stanford University \nSponsored by Illuminate Education \nWatch the Recording\nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nAs long as there are no brain injuries or disabilities\, the ability to understand and produce oral language (listening and speaking) comes naturally to humans. Oral language evolved in our species about 300\,000 years ago—it’s built into our DNA. The same is not true of written language\, which was invented a short 5\,000 years ago. Alphabetic languages are even more recent. \nIn order to become literate\, individuals must learn how to access and process written language\, which in turn requires learning how speech sounds are represented in print. Full\, comprehensive literacy requires much more\, but explicitly linking speech to print is an essential step in the process. During this edWebinar\, Dr. Claude Goldenberg explores this “speech-to-print” (and “print-to-speech”) connection and shares: \n\nThe difference between oral and written language\nHow and why oral language and written language are different and why that matters when teaching students to read and write\nWhy the difference really matters when teaching ELs\nWhat teachers need to do differently when teaching ELs to read and write in English compared to when teaching English speakers to read and write\n\nDon’t miss this opportunity to expand your knowledge of language development and its implications for reading instruction. This recorded edWebinar is of interest to K-12 teachers\, librarians\, school and district leaders\, assessment\, RTI\, and MTSS coordinators\, and educational coaches. \n\nAbout the Presenter \nClaude Goldenberg\, Ph.D. is Nomellini & Olivier Professor of Education\, Emeritus\, Stanford University. He is the author of Successful School Change: Creating Settings to Improve Teaching and Learning (Teachers College); co-author with Rhoda Coleman of Promoting Academic Achievement Among English Learners: A Guide to the Research (Corwin); and co-editor with Aydin Durgunoglu of Language and Literacy Development in Bilingual Settings (Guilford). He has published and been on the editorial boards of various literacy and education academic and professional journals. Dr. Goldenberg’s previous projects focused on improving literacy achievement among English learners in elementary and middle school\, language and literacy development among Mexican children in Mexico\, and a randomized control trial of an early literacy intervention in Rwanda. His current projects include consulting for the U.S. Department of Justice on English learner issues and chairing a research advisory panel on early childhood education for Arizona’s First Things First. \n\nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nJoin the Teaching Reading and Writing community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming edWebinars\, and view recordings of previous programs to earn CE certificates. \n\n \nIlluminate Education partners with K-12 educators to equip them with data to serve the whole child and reach new levels of student performance. DESCRIPTION:Presented by Diana Ceja\, Mathematics Administrator\, Riverside County Office of Education (CA); Karon Akins\, Mathematics Administrator\, Riverside County Office of Education (CA); and Twana Young\, Vice President of Curriculum and Instruction\, MIND Research Institute \nSponsored by ST Math\, Created by MIND Research Institute \nWatch the Recording\nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nMath has been called the universal language. More than any other subject\, math skills are the top predictor for student success. But with lengthy word problems and other language-heavy instructional methods\, how can English learners have the same access to this essential and universal language? And it doesn’t end in the classroom—providing equal access to math success for ELs includes considering their learning needs at home. What does it look like to support students throughout the entire student ecosystem? \nThis approach starts in the classroom\, but that is just the beginning. When we create a true student-centered approach\, where students are the ones actively driving the learning process\, everything else can build on that success. In this session\, we discuss what is working through instructional practices\, supporting teacher development\, supporting families\, and engaging the community. \nThis recorded edWebinar is of interest to PreK-8 teachers\, school and district leaders\, education technology leaders\, and educators and leaders involved with English learners\, bilingual learners\, and math. \nAbout the Presenters \nDiana Ceja is an administrator with the Riverside County Office of Education specializing in TK-12 curriculum\, instruction\, and formative assessment with an emphasis on mathematics\, equity\, and social and racial justice.
