SUMMARY:Text\, Twitter\, Email\, Call: Parents’ Preferences for Communication and Engagement
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dr. Julie A. Evans\, CEO\, Project Tomorrow \nSponsored by Finalsite (new home of Blackboard K-12) \nWatch the Recording\nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nCommunication with parents is more important than ever\, but what really works with today’s parents? During the 2021-22 school year\, Project Tomorrow polled nearly 5\,000 parents of school-aged children from across the country about their personal preferences for teacher\, school\, and district communication through the Speak Up Research Project. The resulting data was analyzed to reveal both common aspirations as well as important differences in those preferences. \nA key factor in the analysis was understanding how a parent’s age or generation influenced their preferences for different communication modalities or digital engagement tools. The reality is that we have four generations of parents with children or grandchildren in our nation’s schools. Texting may work with a millennial parent who has a kindergarten student but that may not be the best strategy for a baby boomer grandparent who is the guardian of a high school student. \nIn this edWebinar\, we share the findings from this nationwide research study and discuss the importance of personalizing school-to-home messaging to meet the needs and expectations of an increasingly diverse parent community. Viewers gain access to a new e-book with the study findings and additional resources to support more effective communication and engagement with their parent communities. \nThis recorded edWebinar is of interest to K-12 teachers\, school and district leaders\, education technology leaders\, and communications and PR officers and leaders. \n \nAbout the Presenter \nDr. Julie A. Evans is the chief executive officer of Project Tomorrow and the founder of the heralded Speak Up Research Project\, which annually collects and reports on the authentic views of 400\,000 K-12 students\, parents\, and educators on key education issues. Dr. Evans serves as the chief researcher on the Speak Up Project and leads national research efforts on the impact of emerging learning models and interventions in both K-12 and higher education. Her work includes helping education leaders embrace change and innovation in education\, and to recognize that the voices and views of their stakeholders\, most notably students\, are valuable leadership assets. \nPrior to joining Project Tomorrow in 1999\, Dr. Evans enjoyed a successful career in management within the technology industry including with two education technology startups. As a national thought leader and influencer\, she brings to discussions about the future of education a unique perspective because of her experiences working in both the for-profit and nonprofit sectors as well as within education. Dr. Evans is a graduate of Brown University and earned her doctorate in educational leadership from the University of California San Diego and California State University San Marcos. She is a frequent facilitator\, speaker\, and writer on new learning models within education\, most notably around digital learning. Among her many accolades and awards\, Dr. Evans was named in April 2020 the winner of EdTech Digest’s National Leader award. SUMMARY:How the Power of Family Engagement Changes the Trajectories of Students and Teachers
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Andy Danilchick\, Co-Founder and Director\, The Project for Mental Health and Optimal Development\, University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education; Sylvia Hall\, Co-Founder\, GAB-on!; and Jarrid Hall\, Co-Founder\, GAB-on! \nSponsored by GAB-on! \nWatch the Recording\nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nThe past two years have been incredibly challenging in the world of education. One of the silver linings is that the impact of parent engagement in a child’s school day has risen in visibility. Decades of research tell us this is key to a child’s academic achievement and agency\, and in igniting aspirations. \nDeveloping a student’s agency builds critical thinking\, gives them a voice to ask for help when navigating hurdles\, and allows them to share their struggles and joys to look forward and better understand their possibilities. Harnessing family engagement through student agency opens a window for parents to see their child’s struggles and joys\, guide and support their child’s strengths\, and feel connected as a family. \nIn this edWebinar\, Andy Danilchick\, Co-founder and Director of The Project for Mental Health and Optimal Development at the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education\, shares the impact of harnessing parent engagement and empowering student voice as pathways to academic achievement\, social-emotional development\, student advocacy\, and overall mental health for students\, and the impact that has in the classroom. Key takeaways include: \n\nConsistent parent/family engagement plays a critical role in students’ academic\, social\, and emotional learning\nStudent voice has the power to identify a child’s struggles\, joys\, and possibilities and change the trajectory of their future\nStudent agency\, when connected with parent engagement outside of the classroom\, has results that lead to higher education\, career opportunities\, and life preparedness\n\nThis recorded edWebinar is of interest to K-12 teachers\, school and district leaders\, librarians\, education technology leaders\, and school counselors. \n \nAbout the Presenters \nAndy Danilchick is the director of Penn GSE’s Project for Mental Health and Optimal Development. SUMMARY:Shifting Reading Instruction in a Realistic and Manageable Way: The Gentle Shift
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Elise Lovejoy\, CEO and Founding Teacher\, Express Readers\nModerated by Erica Vuolle\, Educator Engagement Coordinator\, EdCuration \nSponsored by Express Readers\nHosted by EdCuration \nWatch the Recording\nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nShifting practices to meet the research in reading can feel overwhelming\, especially with the lack of funding\, obstacles in implementation\, and constant changes that teachers face daily. Educators and administrators need to find ways to make the change more manageable\, even within their existing environments with only the available resources. \nDuring this edWebinar\, educators receive a quick summary of the current movement in education towards structured literacy. They are then introduced to practical approaches for shifting mindset and instruction\, in areas such as reading groups/centers\, planning methods\, daily routines\, and educational materials—all without needing to overspend or overwhelm. \nThe gentle shift is a mindset and a path for all educators who might be struggling with where to begin. Essentially\, the transformation begins with educators\, not with programs or packaged materials. These realistic approaches give educators the tools to start shifting practices effectively and to construct a strong foundation to achieve the desired results for their students. \nThis recorded edWebinar helps TK-3 educators initiate a successful adoption of evidence-based reading practices. \n \nAbout the Presenter \nElise Lovejoy is the founder and CEO of Express Readers\, a TK-2nd-grade foundational skills and reading program. Express Readers’ mission is to provide the highest quality of resources and the fullest extent of teacher support\, all with the outcome of higher literacy rates and more engaged readers—anchored in the belief that “every child deserves to learn to read.” Elise holds a BA and an MA in elementary education with 15+ years of experience in the classroom\, grades K-2nd grade. During her teaching\, Elise became frustrated at the lack of quality decodable books and resources created by educators who understood realistic applications in classrooms. She threw herself into research and studies to author a large collection of decodable books\, design a full foundational skills curriculum\, and form a teacher-run company\, which now supports hundreds of schools across the U.S. and Canada. \n \nAbout the Moderator \nErica Vuolle is the educator engagement coordinator at EdCuration. She is a committed educator with ten years’ experience inspiring elementary and middle school students\, transforming classroom cultures\, and implementing effective programs. Express Readers has been successfully supporting schools\, teachers\, and students across the United States since 2014. \n\n \nEdCuration’s mission is to get better resources into classrooms faster to increase student success. To this end\, we run the Certified EdTrustees program\, bringing together aspiring educational leaders to review and pilot instructional resources and provide feedback to the developers regarding how to improve those learning solutions.
