SUMMARY:What Role Do the 5 Pillars of Reading Play in Today’s Classroom?
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Cheryl Lundy Swift\, M.Ed.\, Professional Learning Director\, Learning Without Tears; and Katherine A. Dougherty Stahl\, Ed.D.\, Consultant and Author \nSponsored by Learning Without Tears \nWatch the Recording\nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nIn the years following the report of the National Reading Panel (2000)\, many schools were mandated to provide research-based instruction in the five pillars of reading: phonological awareness\, phonics\, fluency\, vocabulary\, and comprehension. \nIn this edWebinar\, we briefly address how theoretical shifts of the last 20 years have caused instructional shifts in primary classrooms. As teachers\, we often feel like we have to do it ALL. We discuss how to treat reading development holistically\, with key elements consistently emphasized (e.g.\, vocabulary/language development\, comprehension)\, while our time with other processes (e.g.\, phonological awareness\, phonics\, fluency) takes on greater or lesser importance depending on student needs (Kuhn & Stahl). Specific tools and techniques are identified within each developmental stage (e.g.\, reading material\, instructional protocols). \nAt the end of this session\, you can: \n\nIdentify the ways that theoretical pendulum swings influence classroom literacy instruction\, often detrimentally\nIdentify the basic characteristics of readers in the emergent\, novice\, and transitional stages\nRecognize the traits and examples of developmentally appropriate phonological awareness\, phonics\, fluency\, vocabulary\, and comprehension instruction for emergent\, novice\, and transitional readers\n\nThis recorded edWebinar is of interest to teachers\, education technology leaders\, and occupational therapists of the kindergarten through elementary levels. \n\n \nAbout the Presenters \nCheryl Lundy Swift received a Master of Education in administration and supervision from Virginia Commonwealth University and has been a dedicated educator for over 20 years. And 29% of high school students have a parent or adult in the home who has lost their job. \nDay in and day out\, educators are supporting the real students behind these statistics. As you look ahead to aligning resources and programming for the 2022–23 school year\, student mental health is undoubtedly a priority. Social-emotional behavior (SEB) assessment data\, both from this school year and fall screening\, will help you identify and effectively address individual student and district- and school-wide mental health needs. \nDuring this edWebinar\, two leaders in the field of SEB assessment provide guidance on leveraging SEB data to: \n\nAddress the increasing rates of anxiety\, depression\, stress\, and other mental health issues by integrating appropriate mental health supports in both Tier 1 and Tier 2 of your MTSS\nDetermine whether students require mental health services\, social-emotional supports\, or both\nEvaluate the effectiveness of your social-emotional learning (SEL) programs and initiatives and where additional SEL instruction or intervention is needed to help students cope with mental health issues\nIdentify the role of implicit biases to address inequities in services\, supports\, and instruction\n\nDon’t miss this opportunity to learn how to use SEB data to make informed\, impactful decisions about programming\, services\, and placement that will set students up for success in 2022–23. SUMMARY:Using MTSS to Address Learning Gaps: A Blended Learning Approach
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Lynn Bosworth\, Principal\, The Cottage School (GA); and Lisa Baumohl\, Learning Specialist and School Counselor\, The Cottage School (GA) \nSponsored by VEDAMO \nWatch the Recording Listen to the Podcast \nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nView this edWebinar to learn how combining MTSS with blended learning can accelerate learning recovery for all students. \nWith the return to campus\, it is clear that our students have serious gaps in their educational programs. Intervention strategies post pandemic need to blend academic\, social\, and emotional support. In addition to learning loss\, have you noticed more temper tantrums (regardless of age)\, less resistance to change\, and more difficulty making friends? You are not alone. \nIn this edWebinar\, we demonstrate some strategies and interventions that you can immediately use with your students. By using a systematic MTSS approach to intervention\, you can meet all your students where they are. MTSS is a framework that uses data to help match academic and social-emotional behavior assessments and instructional resources to each individual student’s needs. If you blend in-person and online teaching you can reach more students in less time\, in small groups and individually. \nWatch as we go over these strategies and offer real-time solutions to getting back on track.
