SUMMARY:Identifying Special Education Needs: Considerations in an Era of Disrupted Learning
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Sarah Brown\, Ph.D.\, Executive Director of Professional Learning\, Illuminate Education\, Inc.; and Wendy Stuttgen\, Ed.S.\, NCSP\, Literacy Consultant\, St. Croix River Education District (MN) \nSponsored by Illuminate Education \nWatch the Recording\nClosed captioning will be added to the recording within 2 weeks of the live presentation. Get a CE Certificate for this edWebinar Learn more. \nAfter more than a year of disrupted learning\, research shows that larger numbers of students will not meet traditional grade-level benchmarks when they return to learning this fall. This will make it more difficult to determine when students require special education services to get back on track versus when Tier 1 instruction or Tier 2 supports need to be intensified. \nBut how do you develop a process to navigate this “new normal” when it remains uncharted ground? In this recorded edWebinar\, Drs. Sarah Brown and Wendy Stuttgen provide guidance on how to ensure students receive the instruction and interventions they need while reducing unnecessary special education referrals and potential over-identification. The practices used by the St. Croix River Education District serve as a real-world example. Tune in to learn: \n\nHow and when to conduct universal screening to identify class- or school-wide academic needs\nHow to interpret screening data to guide Tier I instruction and identify students in need of Tiers 2 and 3 interventions\nThe role of progress monitoring in determining the effectiveness of Tier 2 interventions and when they should be intensified\nConsiderations related to suspecting disabilities for low-achieving students this fall\n\nScreening and progress monitoring will be more important than ever this coming school year as you work to close learning gaps. This recorded edWebinar provides valuable steps and insights to successfully navigate special education referrals this school year. \nThis recorded edWebinar will be of interest to K-12 teachers\, school and district leaders\, school counselors\, and school psychologists.  \n \nAbout the Presenters \nDr. Sarah Brown is the executive director of professional learning at Illuminate Education. Her work focuses on implementing MTSS at multiple levels of the education system and improving systems to support high achievement for every student. Before joining the Illuminate team\, Dr. Brown led special education and MTSS implementation for the state of Iowa as a bureau chief at the Iowa Department of Education. \n \nWendy Stuttgen\, Ed.S\, NCSP is a literacy consultant for the St. Croix River Education District (SCRED)\, which services six school districts north of the Twin Cities. Prior to these roles\, Wendy worked as a director of special education and school psychologist and has been on faculty as an adjunct professor in the School Psychology Graduate Program. Wendy is passionate about providing evidence-based literacy instruction to students\, and she firmly believes that all children can learn to read if provided systematic and explicit instruction. She recently co-authored a children’s book with her daughter to help both children and parents understand dyslexia and what evidence-based literacy instruction looks like. The book is called Daisy Describes Dyslexia & How She Learns to Read. \n \nClosed captioning will be added to the recording within 2 weeks of the live presentation. \nJoin the Assessment for Learning community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming edWebinars\, and view recordings of previous programs to earn CE certificates. \n\n \nIlluminate Education partners with K-12 educators to equip them with data to serve the whole child and reach new levels of student performance. SUMMARY:School Safety in a Post-Pandemic America: The Critical Need for an All-Hazards Approach
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dr. Amy Klinger\, Director of Programs\, The Educator’s School Safety Network; and Amanda Klinger\, Esq.\, Director of Operations\, The Educator’s School Safety Network \nHosted by The Educator’s School Safety Network\nSponsored by Motorola Solutions \nWatch the Recording\nClosed captioning will be added to the recording within 2 weeks of the live presentation. Get a CE Certificate for this edWebinar Learn more. \nThere are important lessons to be learned about school safety in a post-pandemic America—and not all of them have to do with COVID-19. Since March of 2020\, educators have been in survival mode with little attention\, time\, or resources allocated to the ongoing work of school safety and violence prevention. The brutal reality is that the events and circumstances of the recent past have not erased\, but exacerbated the myriad of safety concerns that existed before the pandemic. \nIt is critical that schools respond to the current public health concerns\, AND prevent a future school safety crisis by addressing the troubling question: What safety practices have we ignored while we were busy dealing with COVID? We must now transition from “survival” mode into “the next thing”—which must include an all-hazards approach to violence prevention and safety. \nIn this recorded edWebinar\, explore the critical need for an all-hazards approach to school safety that empowers educators to plan for\, prevent\, and respond to a wide array of natural and man-made hazards. Vital\, but often-overlooked crisis response principles\, such as threat assessment\, communication plans\, parent reunification\, violence-prevention initiatives\, and improving school culture will be explored in a pragmatic\, research-based fashion. \nCome prepared to self-assess your district’s level of preparedness for preventing and responding to events and generate appropriate action steps to further the development of an all-hazards approach to safety. This recorded edWebinar will be of interest to K-12 teachers\, school and district leaders\, support staff\, and board members. \n \nAbout the Presenters \nDr. Amy Klinger is the founder and director of programs for The Educator’s School Safety Network\, a national non-profit. CCC-SLP\, BCBA\, Training Specialist\, STAR Autism Support \nSponsored by STAR Autism Support \nWatch the Recording\nClosed captioning will be added to the recording within 2 weeks of the live presentation. Get a CE Certificate for this edWebinar Learn more. \nMany students with autism and other developmental delays experience challenges understanding spoken language and effectively communicating their wants and needs. These challenges can impact functional living skills and educational experience by limiting the ability to learn new skills\, participating in groups\, and completing daily routines independently. When students have difficulty understanding language and expressing themselves\, they may demonstrate unexpected behaviors to communicate their frustration and their needs. Caregivers and teaching staff can learn strategies that enable students to use supports to understand language\, as well as use skills to communicate in daily routines. Once students learn the power of understanding language and communication\, they will be more likely to use these skills independently. \nIn this recorded edWebinar\, explore the underlying causes of communication differences in students with autism and other developmental delays. Considering the impact language deficits have on student behaviors\, the presenters share and delve into a variety of free resources that can be used in the home or school setting to increase desired behaviors. Video examples and practical tips will be shared so that participants leave with various ideas to teach students the power of language in daily routines. \nThis recorded edWebinar will be of interest to PreK-12 teachers\, school leaders\, district leaders\, and caregivers of students with autism. \n \nAbout the Presenter \nAimee Dearmon is a speech and language pathologist and a Board Certified Behavior Analyst who has over 15 years of experience serving students with autism and other developmental delays in public\, private and home settings.
