SUMMARY:Six Elements of Success: A K-12 Leaders’ Guide to Successful Technology Integration
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Nicole Adell\, Principal\, Newburg Middle School (KY); Dr. Darin Brawley\, Superintendent\, Compton Unified School District (CA); Patricia Alvarado\, Director of Digital Learning and Learning Resources\, Irving Independent School District (TX); and James Allrich\, Principal\, Argyle Middle School (MD)\nModerated by Lydia Logan\, Executive Director\, Verizon Innovative Learning Schools\, Digital Promise \nSponsored by Digital Promise \nWatch the Recording Listen to the Podcast \nClosed captioning will be added to the recording within 2 weeks. \nGet a CE Certificate for this edWebinar Learn more \nThe COVID-19 pandemic laid bare the inequitable access to technology and broadband required for continuity of education through distance learning\, particularly for students who have traditionally been marginalized. Unprecedented federal funding through the CARES Act and the American Rescue Plan provides an opportunity to make significant strides toward closing the digital learning gap\, but only if we think differently about how schools leverage technology to meet the needs of every learner. Access to technology and broadband alone will not improve teaching and learning. \nDigital Promise’s new K-12 Leaders’ Guide to Successful Technology Integration shares best practices from several of the organization’s initiatives\, including seven years of implementing the Verizon Innovative Learning Schools (VILS) program. They have found that the most successful schools have six elements in place to establish and sustain a culture of powerful learning that leverages technology. \nIn this edWebinar\, you will hear from a superintendent and principal whose district and school helped inform this new resource. You will leave with strategies for achieving these six elements in your districts. \nThis edWebinar will be of interest to K-12 teachers\, school and district leaders\, and instructional technology coaches.  \n \nAbout the Presenters \nNicole W. The New Art and Science of Teaching is a well-researched instructional framework that comprehensively addresses the most alterable effect on student achievement—quality instruction. One of the major emphases in The New Art and Science of Teaching is a focus on student outcomes obtained by teachers’ instructional actions. The premise is that teachers who implement instructional strategies will\, in turn\, help students use mental processes that successively enhance their learning. In other words\, it’s not enough to merely use an instructional strategy\, but more important to ensure it has the desired learning effect for students. \nIn this edWebinar\, Dr. Tina H. Boogren introduces the New Art and Science of Teaching model and explain how educators can use the strategies associated with it to improve their practice at all levels of experience and expertise. Viewers can expect to: \n\nUnderstand the importance of a common language of instruction and a framework for effective teaching\nLearn the instructional framework components\, which include: Three categories\, 10 design areas\, and 43 elements\nDiscover instructional strategies that increase your effectiveness during in-person\, online\, or hybrid instruction\n\nThe New Art and Science of Teaching Model is built on over 20 years of Dr. Robert J. Marzano’s work synthesizing the research and theory on effective teaching. There is also strong evidence that explicit SEL instruction guided by an SEL program supports the development of essential skills. \nBut behind these research headlines\, SEL program designs and corresponding student outcomes vary substantially. As with any program or curriculum adoption\, it’s important to closely review and evaluate SEL programs to make sure they fit the unique needs of your community. \nBut what questions should you ask when comparing options? In this recorded edLeader Panel\, we provide guidance to help you select an SEL program\, including: \n\nReviewing the key characteristics of an effective SEL program\nHow to evaluate SEL program concepts and frameworks to ensure they align with your school’s or district’s mission statement or strategic plan\nHow to evaluate programs to ensure they support your community’s stated vision and priorities\, resourcing and capacity\, and equity advancement\n\nHear the research that shows teacher social-emotional well-being influences implementation of student SEL programs and plays a critical role in advancing equity initiatives and improving teacher stress management. \nSEL will be an important component of return-to-learning plans. This recorded presentation will provide valuable insights to ensure your SEL program is the best one to support your students and teachers. \nThis recorded edLeader Panel will be of interest to preK-12 school and district leaders. \n \n \nAbout the Presenters \nNathaniel P. von der Embse\, Ph.D. is an associate professor of school psychology at the University of South Florida. SUMMARY:Vocabulary Processes and Reading Comprehension: A Dynamic Assemblage of Concepts
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Shane Templeton\, Ph.D.\, Foundation Professor Emeritus of Literacy Studies\, University of Nevada\, Reno\nModerated by Beth Lawrence\, MA\, CCC-SLP\, CEO\, InferCabulary Inc. \nSponsored by InferCabulary \nWatch the Recording\nClosed captioning will be added to the recording within 2 weeks of the live presentation. Get a CE Certificate for this edWebinar Learn more \nConceptual knowledge and development are fluid\, flexible\, and dynamic. This recorded edWebinar demonstrates how teachers may nurture and develop vocabulary knowledge and growth in the context of developing comprehension. The presentation addresses: \n\nHow teachers can realistically apply the most effective research-driven practices for teaching word-specific and generative vocabulary\nHow students’ developing-vocabulary knowledge interphases with ongoing comprehension and understanding during the actual process of reading\n\nWord-specific learning focuses on concepts that are critical to understanding a topic or reading selection. Generative learning focuses on an understanding of morphological processes that generate most of the words in the English language. Extensive research over the last two decades has provided important insight into the nature and course of learning both word-specific and generative vocabulary\, and this edWebinar provides “best practice” examples of instruction for primary\, intermediate\, and middle school. We address how this instruction\, which includes the significant role of background knowledge\, supports and interacts with comprehension across disciplinary areas. \nResources are provided that offer supportive and robust content and instructional “how-tos.” This recorded presentation will be of keen interest to teachers\, those who work with teachers\, and those who are responsible for making decisions about instructional resources for schools and districts.  \n \nAbout the Presenter \nDr. Shane Templeton\, co-author of Words Their Way\, is Foundation Professor Emeritus of Literacy Studies at the University of Nevada\, Reno\, and a former classroom teacher at the primary and secondary levels. His research has focused primarily on developmental word knowledge in elementary\, middle\, and high school students\, and he has been published in both research and professional journals. \nIn addition to Words Their Way\, Dr. Templeton has authored or co-authored a number of books on the teaching of literacy and word study\, including Teaching Reading and Writing: The Developmental Approach (2nd edition); Words Their Way: Vocabulary for Middle and Secondary Students (2nd edition); and Orthographic Knowledge and the Foundations of Literacy. A speaker and consultant nationally and internationally\, Dr. Templeton has served on the Usage Panel of The American Heritage Dictionary and is co-author of elementary literacy and phonics/spelling/vocabulary curricula for Houghton Mifflin Harcourt\, Pearson Education\, and Savvas Learning Company. \n \nAbout the Moderator \nWith 27 years of experience as a pediatric speech-language pathologist focusing on literacy\, Beth Lawrence co-founded an educational technology company to provide innovative\, engaging\, digital solutions for literacy and learning problems present in every K-12 classroom in the U.S. Deena Seifert and she are authors of the Test of Semantic Reasoning. They present nationally about the importance of semantic reasoning and their two unique approaches to teaching vocabulary using visuals and critical thinking: InferCabulary and WordQuations. \n \nClosed captioning will be added to the recording within 2 weeks of the live presentation. \nJoin the Be a Literacy Hero community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming edWebinars\, and view recordings of previous programs to earn CE certificates. \n\nInferCabulary is a web-based\, K12 tool developed by language and literacy experts\, that engages students in a broad spectrum of literacy skills\, including exposure to complex text (audio and visual)\, word recognition\, vocabulary\, and inferential comprehension. Because InferCabulary is game-based\, requiring active engagement and critical thinking\, research has shown it to be far more effective—and fast—at deeply teaching word meanings than traditional instruction methods—and students enjoy the challenge.
