As districts increase computing capacity\, there is an assumption that faculty will adapt. Often\, “adapting” means that what teachers used to do analog\, they now do digitally\, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they are reimagining learning for the new landscape. In this session\, facilitators share effective and replicable workshop ideas that will help faculty adapt their teaching for the 1:1 environment. \n \n  \nMichelle Luhtala is the Library Department Chair at New Canaan High School in Connecticut and was one of five school librarians named as a “Mover and Shaker” by Library Journal in 2015. SUMMARY:Discovery Learning for Infants and Toddlers: Treasure Basket Explorations
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Laura Wilhelm\, Ed.D.\, Associate Professor\, Early Childhood Education\, Oklahoma City University\nSponsored by Gryphon House \nWatch the Recording\nIf you attend the live session\, you’ll be emailed a CE certificate within 24 hours of the edWebinar. If you view the recording and would like a CE certificate\, join the Early Learning Book Chats community and go to the edWebinar Archives folder to take the CE quiz. \nPeople who work with older children may view infants and toddlers in terms of what they cannot do yet. Treasure baskets are a supplement to regularly planned curriculum activities that showcase the amazing capabilities of children between 6 and 36 months. These baskets employ heuristic learning which presents opportunities for the child to discover through five (and more) senses. “Heuristic\,” a new term for many of us\, comes from the same root as “eureka\,” which emphasizes discovery learning. These activities highlight how much longer very young children will attend to something when they are intrigued by it. \nIn this edWebinar\, Dr. Laura Wilhelm shares: \n\nHow and why to design treasure baskets with everyday household and natural objects at little or no cost\nWhy plastic mass-manufactured toys are less appealing with their similar temperature and textures\, bright colors\, and sometimes overpowering lights and sounds\nTeachers’ ideas about the best ways to incorporate heuristic activities within existing curriculum for 6- to 36-month-old children\n\nChildcare providers\, directors\, home visitors\, and mentors who work with infants and toddlers will benefit from this edWebinar. Whether you are a new or veteran childcare provider\, you will walk away from this session ready to become an expert at an individual child’s interests and abilities! \n\nAbout the Presenter \nDr. Laura Wilhelm is an associate professor at Oklahoma City University. She earned her Doctorate of Education at Oklahoma State University. Dr. Wilhelm has taught Pre-K through third grade and directed a child development laboratory school for children from six months through kindergarten. SUMMARY:Emotional Intelligence in ELA and Social Studies: Integrating Social-Emotional Learning into the Curriculum in Ways that Satisfy State Standards
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Jonathan C. Erwin\, M.A.\, Independent Educational Consultant\, Senior Faculty Member of the William Glasser Institute\, and Instructor for the Bureau of Education and Research\nSponsored by Free Spirit Publishing \nWatch the Recording\nIf you attended the live session\, you’ll be emailed a CE certificate within 24 hours of the edWebinar. These students may not be able to focus\, listen\, control impulses\, self-motivate\, or self-regulate\, which naturally prevents them from learning and performing to their full potential. However\, students become totally engaged when they are learning about their favorite subject—themselves. And one of the greatest benefits of integrating social-emotional learning (SEL) with ELA and social studies is that it is student-centered. \nIn this edWebinar\, Jonathan Erwin\, M.A.\, provides a research-based rationale for teaching SEL\, shares lessons that teach specific SEL skills\, and shows how you can use SEL content to satisfy state standards. Leverage Erwin’s 30-plus years in education to learn how SEL can be an excellent vehicle for satisfying the requirements of your state’s ELA standards in addition to improving students’ attitudes and behaviors. This webinar will benefit ELA and social studies teachers grades 3-12\, counselors\, social workers\, and youth empowerment leaders. \nAbout the Presenter \nJonathan C. Erwin\, M.A.\, has been a middle and high school English teacher\, professional development specialist\, college professor\, and director of a federally funded character education program. SUMMARY:Why the ABC’s Aren’t as Easy as 1-2-3 for Preschoolers
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Laura L. Bailet\, Ph.D.\, Nemours Children’s Health System\nSponsored by Kaplan Early Learning \nWATCH THE WEBINAR RECORDING\nIf you attended the live session\, you’ll be emailed a CE certificate within 24 hours of the webinar. If you view the recording and would like a CE certificate\, join the Classroom Management for Early Learning community and go to the Webinar Archives folder to take the CE quiz. \nFor preschoolers\, learning the ABC’s requires a new way of thinking. They need to learn how to process letters and letter sounds differently and very carefully. Sometimes we use an uppercase letter\, and sometimes a lowercase letter. Letter orientation is critical too. If we flip a “b” one way\, it becomes “d”; if we flip it another way\, it becomes “p” or “q.” This isn’t true for objects that young children play with. Many letters have more than one sound\, further complicating the learning process. \nIn this webinar\, Dr. Laura L. Bailet explores the key reasons that learning the ABC’s can be challenging both for children AND their teachers. Learn how to: \n• Review the ABC challenges\n• Describe developmentally-appropriate strategies to increase ABC knowledge\n• Become familiar with the key benchmarks for this important milestone \nLearn current best practices for enhancing alphabet knowledge in young children and gain new ideas and strategies for your classroom. This webinar is designed for preschool and kindergarten educators\, administrators\, and librarians as well as ESE professionals. \n\nAbout the Presenter \nLaura L. Bailet\, Ph.D.\, is a licensed school psychologist and an assistant professor at the College of Medicine at the Mayo Clinic. She has expertise on a wide range of learning problems\, including dyslexia and autism. Dr. Bailet established and directed the Neurocognitive Assessment Program within the Division of Neurology at Nemours Children’s Clinic\, Jacksonville\, FL for 18 years before creating the Nemours BrightStart! initiative. This innovative program promotes reading success and prevents reading failure by combining the fields of neuroscience\, population health\, child development\, and education\, to create powerful tools that level the playing field for all budding readers. SUMMARY:Coaching Educators Builds Creative Capacity
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Cheri Sterman\, Crayola Education Director; Kelly Schofield\, Principal of Hanawalt Elementary School\, Des Moines\, IA; and Sarah Dougherty\, Visual Arts Curriculum Coordinator and Turnaround Arts Director\, Des Moines\, IA\nSponsored by Crayola \nWATCH THE WEBINAR RECORDING\nIf you attended the live session\, you’ll be emailed a CE certificate within 24 hours of the webinar. If you view the recording and would like a CE certificate\, join the Champion Creativity community and go to the Webinar Archives folder to take the CE quiz. \nCoaching educators builds their confidence and creative capacity. Coaching occurs in all sorts of situations from informal hallway chats and social gatherings to more formal PD or PLC group meetings and 1:1 in-depth conversations. Regardless of the venue\, effective coaching is intentional listening. Coaches don’t solve other people’s problems; they help educators discover new approaches and take informed risks that lead to promising practices. Adult learners have much in common with young learners—the need for relevance\, engagement\, application\, and interaction. Sitting and listening to lectures is not an effective teaching approach for helping children learn. That presenter-driven approach is equally boring for adults. \nIn this webinar\, hear insights from Cheri Sterman\, Crayola Education Director; Kelly Schofield\, Principal of Hanawalt Elementary School\, Des Moines\, IA; and Sarah Dougherty\, Visual Arts Curriculum Coordinator and Turnaround Arts Director\, Des Moines\, IA on how to engage adult learners\, and to “make their thinking visible” throughout the conversation as the presenters model a more interactive learning experience. This recorded webinar will benefit K-8 classroom teachers\, art teachers\, literacy specialists\, librarians\, principals\, and early childhood educators and family engagement specialists. \nSpecial Invitation: As special recognition\, educators who post a piece of artwork or sketch from the “make your thinking visible” prompts shared during the webinar will receive a complimentary gift from Crayola. Fifty members of the Champion Creativity community who upload the art to the discussion forum\, “Coaching Educators Builds Creative Capacity” will receive a case of 12 packs of 5 ct. Crayola No Drip Paint Pens. The discussion forum is only accessible to members of the Champion Creativity community and the deadline to upload an example of art is May 17\, 2017. While we’d love to see art wherever you live\, shipping this gift is only applicable for members in the U.S. and Canada. \nAbout the Presenters\nCheri Sterman\, Director of Education for Crayola\, helps ignite educators’ creative confidence and establish creative collaborations within schools and communities. She leverages insights from having worked with educators across the country\, hearing their passion for innovative teaching strategies that awaken students’ voices. Her approach is to ask essential questions\, spark personal epiphanies through hands-on experiences that make thinking visible\, and provide reflective prompts.
