SUMMARY:Engagement Strategies for Students with Attention Challenges: Lower Anxiety and Raise Confidence
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Ezra Werb\, M.Ed.\, Educational Therapist \nSponsored by Free Spirit Publishing \nWatch the Recording\nGet a CE Certificate for this edWebinar Learn more \n“Pay attention!” No classroom teacher wants to keep repeating these words. This presentation is for teachers whose classrooms include students with ADHD or other attention challenges. For these students\, sitting in class seven hours a day\, five days a week…it’s like they’re hummingbirds stuck in a cage. It can be incredibly difficult and stressful for teachers to help them remain engaged. \nIn this edWebinar\, educational therapist Ezra Werb\, M.Ed. shares his strategies for lowering students’ anxiety\, raising confidence\, and increasing engagement. First\, he covers the basics about how ADHD and executive function (EF) deficits affect students’ classroom experiences. He then dives into the strategies of student support he’s fine-tuned over a dozen years. To illustrate how to implement these strategies and clarify why they can be effective in creating incremental successes\, he shares colorful anecdotes about his former students. \nThe strategies do not require you to change your teaching style\, alter your curriculum\, or be an entertainer. They’re all about small adjustments you can incorporate smoothly. Strategy topics include: \n\nIncorporating student interests\nIncreasing writing production\nLowering reading anxiety\n\nAfter the edWebinar\, you will better understand the impact of attention issues and have strategies you can implement immediately. This recorded presentation will be of interest to K-8 teachers\, librarians\, and school and district leaders. \nAbout the Presenter \nEzra Werb\, M.Ed. formerly a behavior interventionist and resource specialist teacher and currently an educational therapist\, has been working with students with attention deficits\, learning challenges\, and spectrum disorders in typical classroom settings\, resource rooms\, and one-on-one academic support scenarios for more than a dozen years. SUMMARY:Culturally Responsive Teaching: Strategies So All Learners Are Seen and Understood
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Monica Washington\, Manager of Inclusive and Responsive Educational Practices\, and Instructional Coach for BetterLesson; Jenny Muñiz\, Senior Program Associate\, Education Policy program\, New America; Kelisa Wing\, Professional Development Specialist; and Medha Tare\, Senior Research Scientist\, Learner Variability Project\, Digital Promise\nHosted by Barbara Pape\, Communications Director\, Learner Variability Project \nSponsored by Digital Promise \nWatch the Recording\nGet a CE Certificate for this edWebinar Learn more \n“Horrifying\, harrowing\, upsetting and infuriating\,” are words Odie Henderson used in his review of Ava Duvernay’s film\, When They See Us\, about the Central Park Five. Though the tragedy occurred in 1989\, when coupled with today’s backdrop of hate crimes against people of color and immigrants\, the pressure of teaching to standards and knowing how to address the everyday violence around us presents a challenge for teachers. As a protestor from the film noted\, “There is injustice happening here.” \nIn this edWebinar\, the presenters react to a few clips from the film and take a deep dive into some of the issues that surfaced and strategies that can be used to create an environment that embraces diversity\, equity\, and inclusion. Two award-winning teachers discuss their strategies for educators to handle historic incidents and current race-based disparities\, discrimination\, and dehumanization of people\, with the goal to create safe spaces for all students to learn and engage fully in their education. The backdrop for our conversation is a survey of state standards relating to culturally responsive teaching from New America\, a Washington\, D.C.-based think tank. Learner Variability Project’s senior researcher makes connections with learning sciences research on how learners are impacted by traumatic experiences and stereotype threat and what they need to overcome these challenges. Issues addressed include: \n\nThe importance of building relationships with each student\nThe importance of creating safe environments for the full diversity of learners\nThe ability to understand the variability in each learner and how that helps a teacher design classroom environments and instructional choices\nHow social awareness and relationship skills can affect learning\, especially for adolescents\nStrategies teachers can start to use tomorrow to nurture each student and help them reach their potential in school\n\nThe edWebinar will highlight how individual steps can be taken towards finding agency\, racial identity validation\, and community. SUMMARY:Supporting STEAM Learning Through Music
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dr. Lili M. Levinowitz\, Director of Research\, Music Together Worldwide\, and Professor Emeritus\, Rowan University \nSponsored by Music Together \nWatch the Recording\nGet a CE Certificate for this edWebinar Learn more \nFull STEAM ahead! Educators recognize that curricular integration is the most efficient\, effective\, and authentic way to support children’s learning in multiple domains. STEAM (Science\, Technology\, Engineering\, Art\, and Math) learning is becoming common in education as increasingly more educators are seeing the benefits of integrating arts-based education with learning in other areas. And\, currently\, there is more interest in beginning STEAM learning in early childhood. \nIn this edWebinar\, understand how music as an “auditory tool” can support young children’s learning in science\, technology\, engineering\, and mathematics—all while developing their innate music capacity. Gain some concrete ideas on ways to use developmentally appropriate music activities to support STEAM learning in enjoyable and holistic ways. This recorded presentation will be of interest to educators working with toddlers\, preschoolers\, and kindergartners. \nAbout the Presenter \nLili M. Levinowitz\, Ph.D. is Professor Emeritus of Music Education at Rowan University. She is the coauthor of the early childhood music and movement program\, Music Together\, and Director of Research for Music Together Worldwide. Dr. Levinowitz is considered a national authority on early childhood music and is actively involved in teaching very young children as well as graduate students. Her articles appear frequently in professional journals and popular magazines. She received her M.M. and Ph.D. from Temple University\, and her B.M. from Westminster Choir College. \n \nJoin the Music in Early Learning community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming edWebinars\, and view recordings of previous programs to earn CE certificates. \n\nAt Music Together\, we understand the importance of music in early childhood—from birth\, in fact. Because the truth is\, most people are born with enough music aptitude to play in a symphony orchestra when they are adults\, if they choose. But first we must learn how to “speak music”—to take the musical instrument we all have\, ourselves\, developing that musical capacity from a very young age. The sounds we make\, our movements\, our rhythms—these are the building blocks of music and of early childhood learning. And that’s what Music Together is all about.

SUMMARY:Character Education: Interview with Medal of Honor Recipient James McCloughan (Vietnam War)
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the Congressional Medal of Honor Society \nWatch the Recording\nGet a CE Certificate for this edWebinar Learn more \nPlan for your class to watch the on-demand recording with Medal of Honor Recipient James McCloughan. McCloughan was awarded the Medal of Honor for risking his life while serving as a combat medic in Vietnam. On May 13\,1969\, McCloughan ran 100 meters through heavy fire to rescue a fallen comrade; that same day\, he led two more Americans to safety while being wounded by shrapnel. Though bleeding heavily\, he again braved enemy assault while moving into the “kill zone” on four more occasions to extract wounded comrades. On May 14th McCloughan was wounded again while aiding two soldiers as enemy companies descended on three sides. McCloughan went into the crossfire numerous times to extract the wounded soldiers\, while also fighting the enemy. When supplies ran low\, he volunteered to hold a blinking light in an open area as a marker for a supply drop while bullets landed all around him. The next morning McCloughan knocked out a rocket-propelled grenade position\, fought enemy soldiers\, treated numerous casualties\, and kept two critically-wounded soldiers alive through the night. \nThis recorded edWebinar is an inspiring learning opportunity for middle and high school students to connect directly with an American hero. Interviews with Medal of Honor Recipients are part of the Medal of Honor Character Development Program\, a free program that helps students build character and promotes responsible citizenship through a deeper understanding of stories of courage and sacrifice. Before the edWebinar\, we encourage teachers to review McCloughan’s story with their class. \nStudent viewers must view the program with their teacher. Click the link to the recording if you would like to show it to your class at another time. \nAbout the Presenter \nPrivate First Class [James] C. McCloughan distinguished himself by acts of gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty from May 13th through 15th\, 1969\, while serving as a combat medic with Charlie Company\, 3rd Battalion\, 21st Infantry\, 196th Light Infantry Brigade\, Americal Division. The company air assaulted into an area near Tam Ky and Nui Yon Hill. On May 13th\, with complete disregard for his life\, he ran 100 meters in an open field through heavy fire to rescue a comrade too injured to move and carried him to safety. That same day\, 2nd Platoon was ordered to search the area near Nui Yon Hill when the platoon was ambushed by a large North Vietnamese Army force and sustained heavy casualties. With complete disregard for his life and personal safety\, Private First Class McCloughan led two Americans into the safety of a trench while being wounded by shrapnel from a rocket-propelled grenade. He ignored a direct order to stay back\, and braved an enemy assault while moving into the “kill zone” on four more occasions to extract wounded comrades. He treated the injured\, prepared the evacuation\, and though bleeding heavily from shrapnel wounds on his head and entire body\, refused evacuation to safety in order to remain at the battle site with his fellow soldiers who were heavily outnumbered by the North Vietnamese Army forces. On May 14th\, the platoon was again ordered to move out towards Nui Yon Hill. Private First Class McCloughan was wounded a second time by small arms fire and shrapnel from a rocket-propelled grenade while rendering aid to two soldiers in an open rice paddy. In the final phases of the attack\, two companies from 2nd North Vietnamese Army Division and an element of 700 soldiers from a Viet Cong regiment descended upon Charlie Company’s position on three sides. Private First Class McCloughan\, again with complete disregard for his life\, went into the crossfire numerous times throughout the battle to extract the wounded soldiers\, while also fighting the enemy. His relentless and courageous actions inspired and motivated his comrades to fight for their survival. When supplies ran low\, Private First Class McCloughan volunteered to hold a blinking strobe light in an open area as a marker for a nighttime resupply drop. He remained steadfast while bullets landed all around him and rocket-propelled grenades flew over his prone\, exposed body. During the morning darkness of May 15th\, Private First Class McCloughan knocked out a rocket-propelled grenade position with a grenade\, fought and eliminated enemy soldiers\, treated numerous casualties\, kept two critically-wounded soldiers alive through the night\, and organized the dead and wounded for evacuation at daylight. His timely and courageous actions were instrumental in saving the lives of his fellow soldiers. Private First Class McCloughan’s personal heroism\, professional competence\, and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself\, the Americal Division\, and the United States Army. \n \nAbout the Host \nCathy Ehlers Metcalf joined the Medal of Honor Character Development Program as Vice President of Education in 2015 after serving as a Regional Curriculum Trainer.
