SUMMARY:Developing\, Maintaining\, and Extending Fluency in Math: Addition and Subtraction
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Sara Delano Moore\, Ph.D.\, Director of Professional Learning\, ORIGO Education \nSponsored by ORIGO Education \nWatch the Recording\nGet a CE Certificate for this edWebinar Learn more \nJoin us for part one of this two-part series focused on developing\, maintaining\, and extending fluency in mathematics. \nFluency in mathematics means more than fast and accurate recall of facts. Yes\, students must know their facts from memory\, but learning them by memorization is not helpful. Knowing from memory means learning from deliberately sequenced\, strategy-based instruction. Knowing from memory means shorter periods of practice over a longer period of time. Being fluent means moving beyond basic facts to using that same reasoning with larger whole numbers\, fractions\, and decimals. How do we support this for our students? \nIn this edWebinar\, review research about fluency and memorization and share strategies for helping students develop fluency for the long run\, putting this research into practice. We share appropriate strategies for addition and subtraction and show how those strategies extend to other classes of numbers. We will also discuss the role of games as an at-home tool for developing fluency. Watch Sara Delano Moore\, Ph.D.\, in this edWebinar to think deeply about building fluency in addition and subtraction. \nThis recorded edWebinar will be of benefit to kindergarten through middle school teachers and school and district leaders.  \nView part 2 here: Developing\, Maintaining\, and Extending Fluency in Math: Multiplication and Division \n \nAbout the Presenter \nSara Delano Moore\, Ph.D.\, serves as Director of Professional Learning and Chair of the Mathematics Advisory Board at ORIGO Education. A fourth-generation educator\, Sara’s work emphasizes the power of deep understanding and multiple representations for learning mathematics. Her interests include building mathematical comprehension and operation sense\, incorporating high-quality literature into mathematics instruction\, and connecting mathematics with engineering design and computational thinking. Sara has served as a classroom teacher of mathematics and science\, a mathematics teacher educator at the University of Kentucky\, Director of the Kentucky Center for Middle School Academic Achievement\, and Director of Mathematics & Science at ETA hand2mind. She has authored numerous articles in professional journals and is a co-author of the Mathematize It! series of books. SUMMARY:Don’t Look Away: Embracing Anti-Bias Classrooms
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Iheoma U. Iruka\, Ph.D.\, Chief Research Innovation Officer & Director\, HighScope Educational Research Foundation; Stephanie Curenton\, Ph.D.\, Associate Professor\, Boston University; and Kerry-Ann Escayg\, Ph.D.\, Assistant Professor\, University of Nebraska at Omaha \nSponsored by Gryphon House \nWatch the Recording\nGet a CE Certificate for this edWebinar Learn more \nIn this edWebinar\, the lead authors of the newly released book\, Don’t Look Away: Embracing Anti-Bias Classrooms\, call all early education professionals to lean in as “sheroes” and “heroes” in the lives of children; early educators are potential change agents in children’s and families’ lives. The goal of this edWebinar is to ensure that participants understand and embrace anti-bias and anti-racist teaching approaches by creating affirming culturally-rich classroom environments that protect children from psychological trauma and heals them from the inside out. Viewers will learn how institutional racism is visited in the early childhood space and the roles of implicit bias\, microaggression\, and white privilege in undermining the excellence and learning of minoritized Black and brown children and those who teach them. Viewers will be armored with tools and strategies\, but most importantly\, partners in the fight to ensure that we deliver on the promise of education especially for those who helped to build it. \nThis recorded edWebinar will be of interest to preK through elementary teachers\, school and district leaders\, coaches\, trainers\, and childcare providers\, owners\, and administrators. \n \nAbout the Presenters \nIheoma U. Iruka\, Ph.D.\, is the Chief Research Innovation Officer and Director of The Center for Early Education Research and Evaluation at HighScope Educational Research Foundation. Dr. Iruka is engaged in projects and initiatives focused on how evidence-informed policies\, systems\, and practices in early education can support the optimal development and experiences of low-income and ethnic minority children\, such as through family engagement and support\, quality rating and improvement systems\, and early care and education systems and programs. She has been engaged in addressing how best to ensure excellence for young diverse learners\, especially Black children\, such as through the development of a classroom observation measure\, examination of non-traditional pedagogical approaches\, public policies\, and publications geared towards early education practitioners and policymakers. \n \nStephanie M. Curenton\, Ph.D.\, is a tenured Associate Professor at the Boston University Wheelock College of Education & Human Development. She studies the social\, cognitive\, and language development of low-income and minority children within various ecological contexts\, such as parent-child interactions\, early childhood education programs\, early childhood workforce programs\, and related state and federal policies. \n \nKerry-Ann Escayg\, Ph.D.\, is an Assistant Professor of Early Childhood Education at the University of Nebraska-Omaha. Dr. Escayg’s research focuses on anti-racism in early childhood education as well as children and race. As a social theorist\, Dr. Escayg has utilized central tenets of Critical Race Theory\, Black Feminist Thought\, and Anti-racist Education to offer incisive exegeses on children’s racial attitudes\, including strategies to promote positive racial identity among Black children; a research-derived protocol to assess how children express their racialized beliefs through play; and an anti-racist approach to U.S early childhood education. Her recent publications on anti-racism highlight and interrogate the ways in which whiteness\, as a system of racial privilege\, functions in early childhood contexts. Central to Dr. Escayg’s work is a commitment to racial equity in the early years and the holistic well-being of children of color\, and Black children in particular. \nJoin the Early Learning Book Chats community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming edWebinars\, and view recordings of previous programs to earn CE certificates. \n\nGryphon House\, Inc. is an award-winning publisher of early childhood resources for teachers and parents.

SUMMARY:The Five Pillars of Reading: A Foundation for Literacy Success in a Virtual World
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Jason Carroll\, Director of Product Management\, Texthelp; and Kimberly Nix\, Senior Professional Development Manager\, Texthelp \nSponsored by Texthelp \nWatch the Recording\nGet a CE Certificate for this edWebinar Learn more \nAll the best things in life start with a strong foundation and the ability to read is a critical building block of every student’s literacy journey. \nEvery child is different\, each one of them unique with their own star qualities\, strengths\, and challenges. And for many students\, being in a class and now learning remotely from home can feel intimidating and even overwhelming\, which can lead to a loss in reading achievement. \nAcademic success isn’t a given for an alarming 60% of US students classified as ‘struggling’. This group includes low performers on The Nation’s Report Card\, as well as English Language Learners\, or those qualifying for an Individualized Education Program (IEP). Factor in students with learning differences like dyslexia\, and that’s an awful lot of students facing an uphill climb each day. \nNow\, can you imagine being able to give every single child in your class – regardless of age or ability – the proper one-on-one support they need while they practice their reading\, even remotely? Imagine helping them understand the meaning of unfamiliar words and giving them a full appreciation of the cadence and content of any reading passage\, whether in the classroom or from home. \nIn this edWebinar\, we explore the five pillars of reading and why they are essential to successfully teach students to read. In particular\, we explore how technology provides that much needed one-on-one support to further develop these pillars and\, in turn\, prevent students from losing reading achievement in times of change and in remote learning environments. \nThis recorded edWebinar will be of interest to kindergarten through middle school teachers and school leaders. \nAbout the Presenters \nJason Carroll is Director of Product Management at Texthelp. SUMMARY:Happy and Healthy at Home: Student Mental Health and Distance Learning
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dr. Lisa Strohman\, Psychologist\, Author\, and Founder of Digital Citizen Academy; Dr. Susan Enfield\, Superintendent\, Highline Public Schools\, WA; Dr. Tom Leonard\, Superintendent\, Eanes Independent School District\, TX; and Dr. Michael Muñoz\, Superintendent\, Rochester Public Schools\, MN\nHosted by Annie Galvin Teich\, Writer\, Editor\, and K-12 Market Specialist \nSponsored by Gaggle \nWatch the Recording\nGet a CE Certificate for this edWebinar Learn more \nToday’s students are experiencing an unprecedented shift in the way they learn. School buildings across the country have closed in response to the pandemic\, affecting more than 55 million students. Educators have worked hard to move to distance learning\, ensuring that students can still be engaged in their education from home. But with more than a dozen states announcing their intention to keep buildings closed for the rest of the semester\, it’s unlikely that students will return to their normal routines anytime soon. \nDistance learning can be challenging and isolating for students\, who may feel disconnected from friends and teachers. Educators can get a sense of students’ mental health and well-being in the classroom\, but losing that face-to-face contact makes it harder to gauge how students are doing during this stressful time. While schools may have protocols in place to support struggling students on campus\, educators may be unsure of how they can help remotely. \nWatch this edWebinar for a discussion about this “new normal” of distance learning. We dive into the trends of how and what students are doing as seen through Gaggle’s data\, as well as how educators can keep students safe and connected while they learn at home. \nThis recorded edWebinar will be of benefit to school and district leaders of elementary through high school grade levels. \n \nAbout the Presenters \nDr. Lisa Strohman is a clinical psychologist\, author\, public speaker and the founder and director of Digital Citizen Academy. She established Digital Citizen Academy to proactively prevent and educate students\, educators\, and parents on the issues resulting from technology use and misuse. In addition\, Dr. Strohman was a Visiting Scholar for the FBI working on homicidal pedophilia when Columbine occurred\, giving her the opportunity to be on the front lines of how technology impacts our youth. She has continued to work with law enforcement and the FBI on safety and cybercrimes involving adolescents\, while also lending her knowledge and guidance to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. \n \nDr. Susan Enfield serves as Superintendent of Highline Public Schools in Washington. Successfully leading digital transformations within rural school districts has a tremendous impact on our nation as a whole. \nTechnology planning and investments can typically be quite complicated. Often the challenges begin almost from the moment a district begins to consider next steps in a comprehensive technology plan. With tight budgets and multiple stakeholders involved\, each with valid concerns\, along with the constant evolution of technology tools and resources\, a framework for evaluating technology initiatives and guidelines for arriving at well-supported decisions are more important than ever before. \nWatch this edWebinar with three tech-savvy superintendents\, from three different states\, as they share how they lead their districts in creating technology plans that align priorities\, costs\, and outcomes and also assure that the ability to sustain technology initiatives over time is part of the planning process. Each superintendent explains their strategies and imparts their expertise on the total cost of ownership\, student outcomes\, budget management\, and the value of investment. Tools and resources to evaluate\, rethink and strengthen technology planning and decision making will be shared. \nGiven the current challenges involved with the efforts to continue teaching and learning in the midst of multiple school closures\, the issues involved in school districts’ strategic technology planning are now more urgent and relevant than ever.
