SUMMARY:Building Reading Fluency: The Role of Rich and Varied Practice - Part 2
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dr. Carolyn Brown\, Adjunct Professor of Communication Sciences and Disorders\, University of Iowa\, and Co-Founder\, Foundations in Learning; and Dr. Carolyn Strom\, Former Teacher\, Current Clinical Assistant Professor of Early Childhood Literacy\, NYU Steinhardt School of Culture\, Education & Human Development\nModerated by Allison Zimmermann\, Former Teacher\, Current CEO\, Foundations in Learning \nSponsored by WordFlight- Foundations in Learning \nWatch the Recording\nLearn more about earning a CE certificate and our accessibility features. \nFor years\, the phrase “rich and varied practice” has been used in reading instruction—but often without a clear definition. Explicit\, direct instruction is a cornerstone of the Science of Reading\, but it is in “rich and varied practice” that students consolidate and generalize their learning so that they can become fluent readers. The specification of “rich and varied practice” is long overdue. A systematic and structured approach to practice must incorporate the learning principles that support the development of complex and automatic skills. This approach is especially critical and timely for our struggling readers in upper elementary and middle school. \nThis edWebinar presents Part 2\, which will focus on the impact of elaboration\, rehearsal\, and desirable difficulties on learning\, memory\, and retrieval. Viewers leave with classroom strategies and tools to bring “rich and varied practice” to life\, and learn how to increase student engagement\, accelerate fluency\, and strengthen long-term comprehension. Join us as we discuss the development of automaticity\, fluency\, engagement\, deeper learning\, and stronger outcomes. \nThis recorded edWebinar is of interest to elementary and middle school teachers\, librarians\, school leaders\, district leaders\, and education technology leaders. \nView Part 1: Building Reading Fluency: The Role of Rich and Varied Practice \n \n \nAbout the Presenters \nDr. Carolyn Brown has devoted her career to developing tools and testing solutions that optimize language and literacy development for all students. SUMMARY:A Math Education Game Changer: Assessing What Really Counts
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Jay McTighe\, Author and Consultant\, McTighe and Associates Consulting; and Jay Meadows\, Experienced Educator\, Current CEO\, Exemplars \nSponsored by Exemplars \nWatch the Recording\nLearn more about earning a CE certificate and our accessibility features. \nFeaturing special guest speaker Jay McTighe. \nWhat does high-quality student work look like in today’s math classroom? The recent versions of mathematics standards (e.g.\, NCTM\, CCSS\, TEKS) emphasize the development of mathematical reasoning\, problem-solving strategies\, and associated habits of mind (e.g.\, precision\, perseverance) along with computational accuracy. In addition\, many schools and districts have adopted a Portrait of a Graduate that identifies cross-disciplinary competencies that are valued in the modern world (e.g.\, creativity\, ability to work effectively in teams\, responsible citizenship\, communication using various media). Such learning outcomes have significant implications for mathematics instruction as well as for assessment practices. \nIn this edWebinar\, Jay McTighe and Jay Meadows explore what math teaching and assessment should look like in today’s schools for students to achieve these valued outcomes. Jay and Jay make the case for the increased use of authentic math tasks—on both large-scale\, end-of-the-year accountability tests and on classroom assessments—to measure what really matters and promote more engaging and relevant instruction. \nThey investigate the game-changing potential of artificial intelligence (AI) to transform mathematics assessment to enable educators to efficiently and effectively gauge all valued outcomes\, not just those easiest and cheapest to test. They describe TRISTAN\, an AI tool capable of reading students’ handwritten responses to open-ended tasks that ask students to show their thinking\, not simply select an answer from a given set of options. \nIt is now possible to transform the way we teach and assess mathematics towards what really counts! This recorded edWebinar is of interest to K-12 teachers\, school leaders\, and district leaders. \n\n \n \nAbout the Presenters \nJay McTighe is a veteran educator and accomplished author\, having co-written 18 books\, including the award-winning and best-selling Understanding by Design® series with Grant Wiggins. His books have been translated into 14 languages. Jay has also written more than 50 book chapters\, articles\, and blogs\, and has been published in leading journals\, including Educational Leadership (ASCD)\, Edutopia\, and Education Week. Jay has an extensive background in professional development and is a regular speaker at state\, national\, and international conferences. He has made presentations in 48 states within the United States\, in seven Canadian provinces\, and internationally in 41 countries on six continents. Jay received his undergraduate degree from the College of William and Mary\, earned his master’s degree from the University of Maryland\, and completed post-graduate studies at Johns Hopkins University. \n \nJay Meadows is the Chief Executive Officer of Exemplars\, a leading force in redefining how students learn to think mathematically. DESCRIPTION:Presented by Shari Conditt\, Social Studies Teacher and Instructional Coach\, Woodland High School (WA); Marc Turner\, Social Studies Teacher\, Spring Hill High School (SC); Dr. Emma Humphries\, Chief Education Officer\, iCivics; and Emeka Barclay\, Former Teacher\, Current Curriculum Associate\, iCivics \nSponsored by iCivics \nWatch the Recording\nLearn more about earning a CE certificate and our accessibility features. \nThe growing political divide in our communities has made conversations about civil rights feel especially complex—and at times daunting—for educators. Yet civil rights are foundational to understanding our democracy and our shared civic responsibilities. Students deserve opportunities to explore how the United States has defined\, expanded\, challenged\, and debated civil rights from the nation’s founding to the present day. \nIn this edWebinar\, iCivics invites educators to engage in a thoughtful\, practical discussion about teaching civil rights across U.S. history. This session goes beyond a single era or movement\, examining how civil rights have been addressed through the Constitution\, landmark amendments\, court cases\, legislation\, and ongoing civic debates. Together\, we explore how questions of rights\, liberty\, and plurality have evolved\, and why those conversations still matter in classrooms today. \nYou hear from educators working across political\, geographic\, and socioeconomic contexts who are navigating similar challenges and uncertainties. Learn strategies for fostering civil dialogue\, grounding instruction in historical evidence\, and helping students grapple with complex issues. Leave with classroom-ready tools\, renewed confidence\, and the reassurance that you are not alone in teaching these essential civic concepts. SUMMARY:Closing the Attendance Impact Gap Part 2: 3 Steps to Maximize Return on Attendance\, and What Absence Really Costs
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Kate Pechacek\, Former Teacher\, Current K12 Strategic Consultant\, No Isolation; Carsten Apsel\, Head of School\, German International School Washington D.C. (MD); and Roland Jones\, Former Teacher\, Current K12 Partnerships\, No Isolation \nSponsored by No Isolation \nWatch the Recording\nLearn more about earning a CE certificate and our accessibility features. \nWhen student attendance declines\, the impact extends far beyond individual classrooms. Absence creates a ripple effect across entire school systems\, affecting student learning and well-being\, educator capacity\, school culture\, community trust\, and district finances. \nIn this second edWebinar in the four-part Closing the Attendance Impact Gap series\, we examine attendance not as a compliance issue\, but as a systems challenge with compounding costs. Missed instructional time leads to learning gaps that require additional intervention. Inconsistent attendance strains teachers and support staff. Over time\, chronic absence can weaken school culture\, erode family trust\, and influence enrollment and funding stability. \nDrawing on research and the real-world experience of school leaders\, this edWebinar helps viewers understand where the true costs of absence show up\, and why reactive approaches often fall short. A practicing school leader shares firsthand insights into how attendance challenges affect students\, staff\, and operations\, and what has made a meaningful difference in practice. \nViewers are also introduced to three strategic moves districts can make to maximize their “return on attendance” by strengthening prevention\, improving cross-department coordination\, and aligning family engagement with attendance goals. \nViewers leave with a clearer understanding of how attendance impacts funding in their state\, how it connects to academic and operational outcomes\, and practical strategies to address attendance in ways that deliver benefits far beyond daily counts. This recorded edWebinar is of interest to teachers\, school leaders\, and district leaders of all grade levels. \nView part one: 5 Gap-Filling Strategies for Solving the Attendance Paradox\nView part three: 3 Strategies to Build Belonging – the Key to Attendance Today and Every Day After\nView part four: Completing the Missing Pieces of Your Attendance System \n \n \nAbout the Presenters \nKate Pechacek serves as a K–12 Strategic Advisor to systems-improving education technology organizations and school districts\, including No Isolation\, and is the founder and CEO of OpendoorsEd.
