SUMMARY:The First Step to Reading by Third Grade: Solving the Kindergarten Readiness Gap
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Aruna Gilbert\, Executive Vice President and Chief Program and Policy Officer\, Early Learning Coalition of Palm Beach County; Dr. Hee Jin Bang\, Vice President\, Efficacy Research & Evaluation\, Age of Learning; and Dr. Dan Domenech\, Former Executive Director\, AASA\, The School Superintendents Association \nSponsored by Age of Learning \nWatch the RecordingListen to the Podcast \nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nAcross the country\, too many children begin kindergarten already behind in the skills essential for early reading success. By third grade\, the gap only widens—students who start school unprepared are far less likely to meet grade-level expectations and more likely to struggle throughout their academic journey. But what if we could change that trajectory before kindergarten even begins? \n\nThis edWebinar explores how districts\, early learning coalitions\, and educators can address one of the most pressing challenges in education today: ensuring every child is kindergarten ready. National and local leaders discuss what it takes to build strong foundations in literacy\, the evidence behind successful early learning interventions\, and the impact of getting it right from the very start. \nJoin us to learn how your district can take the first step toward ensuring every child enters kindergarten ready to succeed. Key discussion topics include: \n\nWhy kindergarten readiness is one of the most critical\, and overlooked\, determinants of lifelong learning\nWhat rigorous research reveals about early literacy interventions that accelerate student growth\nLessons from Florida’s early learning coalitions on implementing and scaling solutions that work\nPractical strategies district and state leaders can adopt now to close readiness gaps before they widen\nMeasuring what matters: Using data to drive kindergarten readiness outcomes\n\nThis recorded edWebinar is of interest to PreK school leaders\, district leaders\, and education technology leaders. \n \n \nAbout the Presenters \nAruna Gilbert serves as Executive Vice President and Chief Program and Policy Officer for the Early Learning Coalition of Palm Beach County\, where she leads the design\, implementation\, and strategic direction of programs and policy initiatives supporting early childhood education in the region. A RAND report from 2024 revealed that one-third of teachers request additional resources or support specifically pertaining to reading comprehension. \nIn part two of this engaging\, two-part edWebinar series\, Dr. Molly Ness—seasoned reading researcher\, author of several books\, and former classroom teacher—unpacks the most impactful comprehension strategies through modeling in authentic text. We bridge the research-to-practice gap as we focus on three high-leverage comprehension strategies and their application across text genres and grade levels. \nAll K-6 educators and administrators are invited to view and leave with: \n\nClear definitions and research-based insights into three high-leverage strategies: inference\, text structure\, and summarization\nExamples of how to apply these high-leverage strategies to authentic text\nSentence starters and teacher language to confidently model strategy instruction in your classroom\n\nJoin us to transform your comprehension instruction and empower your students to become thoughtful\, strategic readers. This recorded edWebinar is of interest to K-6 teachers\, librarians\, school leaders\, district leaders\, and education technology leaders. \nView Reading Comprehension Success = Strategy + Knowledge (Part 1) \n \n \nAbout the Presenters \nDr. Molly Ness is a former classroom teacher\, a reading researcher\, and a teacher educator.
