SUMMARY:Giving Effective Feedback to Your Students
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Susan M. Brookhart\, Ph.D.\, Consultant\, Brookhart Enterprises LLC\nSponsored by Triumph Learning \nWATCH THE WEBINAR RECORDING\nIt’s not the provision of feedback\, but the students’ use of it that makes feedback effective. In this two-part webinar series\, participants learned a framework for looking at how feedback is given and how it is used. We then applied this framework to examples of oral and written feedback. \nThe two most common forms of teacher feedback to students in classrooms are oral and written. In part two of this series\, participants analyzed examples of oral and written feedback\, evaluate their quality\, and judge their effectiveness. This recorded webinar applied the framework for looking at feedback from part one\, to examples in different content areas and at different grade levels. Watch Susan M. Brookhart\, Ph.D. to learn about providing effective feedback to your students. \nJoin the Assessment For Learning community to participate in online discussions with peers\, for invitations to upcoming webinars\, to view past webinar recordings\, to take a quiz and receive a CE certificate for a past webinar\, and for access to more resources. \n  \nSusan M. Brookhart\, Ph.D.\, is an education consultant based in Helena\, Montana\, U.S.A. She currently works with teachers\, schools\, districts\, universities\, and states in the area of classroom assessment. She has been a classroom teacher and a professor and department chair in the School of Education at Duquesne University\, where she currently is an adjunct faculty member. Her interests include the role of both formative and summative classroom assessment in student motivation and achievement\, the connection between classroom assessment and large-scale assessment\, and grading. She has written or co-authored sixteen books and over 70 articles on assessment. \n  \nWATCH THE WEBINAR RECORDING \nA CE certificate will be emailed to live attendees within 24 hours of the live event.\nIf you miss the live session\, a link to view the recording will be sent within 24 hours of the live event. \n  \nDeveloped specifically for the Common Core State Standards\, Triumph’s Common Core Coach\, Support Coach\, and Performance Coach series provide professional development support for teachers and rigorous instruction and practice for students\, covering the skills and concepts students need to master. In four case studies in Kentucky\, an outside research firm found that the use of Common Core Mathematics or Common Core English Language Arts with elementary and middle school students contributed to an improvement in the achievement levels on K-PREP\, Kentucky’s state-wide test. The number of students who performed at the lowest level (Novice) decreased significantly\, with a corresponding increase at the higher performance levels. \n

SUMMARY:Making Media that Sticks
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Tony Vincent\, educator\, consultant and author\nSponsored by Learning Bird \nWATCH THE WEBINAR RECORDING\nThere are six principles of sticky ideas according to Dan and Chip Heath\, authors of Made to Stick. Sticky ideas are ones that we can plainly understand\, clearly remember\, and easily retell. When teachers and students make educational media\, whether visual\, audio or video\, we want them to be sticky. Let’s look at examples so we can make our own (and our students’) ideas stick. \n  \nJoin The Digital Educator community to participate in online discussions with peers\, for invitations to upcoming webinars\, to view past webinar recordings\, to take a quiz and receive a CE certificate for a past webinar\, and for access to more resources. \n  \n \nThe only thing Tony Vincent likes better than teaching is learning. He currently resides in Council Bluffs\, Iowa\, but he used to teach fifth grade in Nebraska. Since 1998 he’s been a pioneer in digital learning\, having a classroom website before many classrooms even had internet access. In 2001 he had a 1:1 classroom full of Palm Pilots\, and in 2005 he started one of the first podcasts from an elementary school. Today\, Tony is focused on helping teachers empower students with technology. \n  \n  \nWATCH THE WEBINAR RECORDING \n  \nLearning Bird is dedicated to helping students learn their own way. Their library of teacher-created digital lessons provides multiple perspectives on every topic so that if one lesson doesn’t help your kids understand\, another one most definitely will. All of the lessons are aligned to local curricula and textbooks and will help your kids develop the self-directed learning skills they need to succeed. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Boys\, boys\, boys! Why they’re falling behind and what to do about it
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Ruth Hanford Morhard\, President\, Ruth Reid & Company Consultants in Early Childhood\nSponsored by Kaplan Early Learning Company \nWATCH THE WEBINAR RECORDING\nStudies show boys are falling behind in early learning environments. In this webinar\, Ruth Hanford Morhard looked at why based on the latest brain research. She outlined how today’s early childhood classrooms are failing boys and offered simple boy-friendly strategies to improve boys’ learning and behavior in and out of the classroom. \nBoys’ brains differ from girls’ in many ways that affect learning. Understanding how boys’ brains work is essential to helping them perform at their best. As an example\, many teachers expect boys to sit still and listen. It’s easier for girls and it’s more difficult for boys. Their brains are wired for movement. They learn best when they’re physically\, as well as mentally engaged. \nIn this webinar\, attendees gained insight into what makes boys tick and how they can incorporate the boy-friendly strategies that help boys do and be their best. The overall goal is to create positive environments in which boys\, girls\, teachers and parents all benefit. \nJoin the Classroom Management for Early Learning community to participate in online discussions with peers\, for invitations to upcoming webinars\, to view past webinar recordings\, to take a quiz and receive a CE certificate for a past webinar\, and for access to more resources. \n  \nRuth Hanford Morhard is the author of Wired to Move: Facts and Strategies for Nurturing Boys in an Early Childhood Setting. SUMMARY:The Impact of Trauma on Growth and Development
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Barbara Sorrels Ed. D.\, Executive Director\, The Institute for Childhood Education\nSponsored by Gryphon House \nWATCH THE WEBINAR RECORDING\nIn our current culture of accountability and standardization\, the learning struggles of young children are typically attributed to the need for more rigorous standards\, more accountability\, a different curriculum\, or more “highly qualified teachers.” The premise of this webinar is that one of the primary reasons a child isn’t learning is due to the experience of trauma in the first five years of life. We live in a child illiterate culture and the developmental needs of children have been compromised due to the many forms of trauma experienced by more than half of children. \nIn this recording viewers will: \n\nLearn the definition of trauma and the many types of adverse experiences of the majority of children. The most toxic form of trauma is to suffer harm at the hands of those who are supposed to love and protect\, putting the child in an impossible psychological dilemma.\nRecognize the characteristics of children who have been exposed to trauma. Trauma and loss in the earliest years of life changes children from the inside out. Many are diagnosed with ADD\, ADHD or oppositional defiant disorder when the root of the issue is trauma.\nDescribe the multi-system failure that is the signature of trauma. Trauma results in the failure of the attachment\, regulatory\, social\, sensory processing and learning systems.\nUnderstand the impact of trauma on learning. It is not that the child won’t learn – it is that the child can’t learn.\n\nThis webinar will give teachers and caregivers a different lens through which to look at children’s struggles in the classroom. \nJoin the Early Learning Book Chats community to participate in online discussions with peers\, for invitations to upcoming webinars\, to view past webinar recordings\, to take a quiz and receive a CE certificate for a past webinar\, and for access to more resources. \n  \nDr. Barbara Sorrels’ passion for children at risk began as a teenager growing up in Washington D.C. during the 60’s. Her involvement with inner city programs for children sparked her desire to understand how growing up in adverse circumstances impacts healthy development. Committed to providing the most up-to-date research available\, she brings insight into the impact of trauma on children’s growth and development\, and provides practical strategies for childcare providers\, teachers and parents on how to create healing environments for vulnerable children in her book\, Reaching and Teaching Children Exposed to Trauma. \nShe is currently the Executive Director of the Institute for Childhood Education\, a private consulting firm that provides resources and professional development to state agencies\, school districts\, child care centers\, and parents. Over the last 40 years she has worked in the field of early childhood education in a variety of capacities: classroom teacher\, founder and director of two early childhood centers\, university professor\, consultant and parent educator. She holds a B.A. in early childhood education from the University of Maryland; a master’s degree in religious education from Southwestern Seminary; and a doctorate in early childhood from Oklahoma State University. \nWATCH THE WEBINAR RECORDING \nA CE certificate will be emailed to live attendees within 24 hours of the live event.\nIf you miss the live session\, a link to view the recording will be sent within 24 hours of the live event. \n \n  \nGryphon House\, Inc. is an award-winning publisher of early childhood resources for teachers and parents. \n  \nSaveSave

Cheri has found that using art as a metaphor for relationships can often spark conversations that otherwise might not have occurred. She has presented this self-reflection workshop to diverse groups of educators—including principals\, superintendents\, school board members\, art teachers\, and classroom teachers—each coming away with a passion for improving their school culture and a sense of how to do that. A principal recently gave a rave review of Cheri’s workshop: “Professional Development can’t treat teachers like empty vessels to be filled. Cheri’s workshops extract wonderful insights from teachers and the discussions get to the heart of best practices. She taps into the powerful insight that the way teachers teach has more to do with how they feel than what they know.
