SUMMARY:Much More Than the ABC Song! Music That Naturally Supports Children's Language and Literacy Skills
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Devi Borton\, M.A.\, Early Childhood Music Specialist\, Outreach Mentor\, and Teacher Trainer at Music Together\, LLC.\nSponsored by Music Together \nWATCH THE WEBINAR RECORDING\nWithin 24 hours after the live event\, a CE certificate is emailed to live attendees who logged in online with their email address. To get your CE certificate for logging in live by phone\, or for watching the recording\, join the Arts & Music in Early Learning community and go to the Webinar Archives folder to take the CE quiz. As a member of the community\, you’ll also have access to additional resources and online discussions. \nThis lively webinar highlighted the numerous ways in which playful and developmentally appropriate songs and chants can naturally support young children’s development of essential language and literacy skills. These skills include phonological awareness\, active listening\, vocabulary development\, print awareness\, and narrative skills. Through a discussion of the aspects of language development inherent in music activity and the natural connections between language learning and music making\, gain ideas on how to easily use music to support their language learning goals in the classroom (regardless of music ability). The presenter shared some songs and chants that are accessible and enjoyable for both children and adults\, and provided ideas on how to adapt favorite songs to support children’s language development – all while having fun! \nDevi has an extensive background in vocal performance\, dance\, and acting\, performing in numerous local theatre productions during her youth and starring on a locally produced television show in the Bay Area in California for four years. She began her adult professional career in the healing arts as a bodyworker\, birth educator\, doula\, and certified infant massage instructor. Devi has been a Music Together teacher and center director at FAM JAM! in Santa Fe\, NM\, since 2003. With a passion for bringing music to children and families in need\, she has been the Outreach Coordinator for Music Together LLC since 2010. As a Music Together Teacher Trainer\, she trains new Music Together teachers across the globe and runs professional development workshops for current teachers. B.A. Dance at UCLA\, M.A. Counseling Psychology at JFK University\, Music Together Certification Level II. \n  \nAt Music Together\, we understand the importance of music in early childhood—from birth\, in fact. Because the truth is\, most people are born with enough music aptitude to play in a symphony orchestra when they are adults\, if they choose. But first we must learn how to “speak music”—to take the musical instrument we all have\, ourselves\, developing that musical capacity from a very young age. The sounds we make\, our movements\, our rhythms—these are the building blocks of music and of early childhood learning. And that’s what Music Together is all about.

SUMMARY:New Elementary Lessons and Live Interview with Medal of Honor Recipient Charles Hagemeister
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation\nSponsored by the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation \nWATCH THE WEBINAR RECORDING\nWithin 24 hours after the live event\, a CE certificate is emailed to live attendees who logged in online with their email address. To get your CE certificate for logging in live by phone\, or for watching the recording\, join the Lessons of Personal Bravery and Self-Sacrifice community and go to the Webinar Archives folder to take the CE quiz. As a member of the community\, you’ll also have access to additional resources and online discussions. \nWatch with your elementary students! \nMedal of Honor Recipient Chuck Hagemeister told his personal story during this special webinar presented by the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation (CMOHF). We encourage teachers and their elementary classes to watch Mr. Hagemeister recount his experiences growing up and his actions leading to the Medal of Honor. We also introduced two brand new elementary lessons educators will be able to use immediately with their classes. \nEarly in the afternoon of Mar. 20\, 1967\, Specialist 4th Class Hagemeister’s platoon was ordered on a rescue mission for an Army company operating in Binh Dinh Province. The company’s officers had been killed or wounded and the force was in danger of being overrun. Hagemeister’s platoon were moving through the graveyard of a small village when they were ambushed on three sides. Within minutes\, he was treating wounded soldiers under heavy fire\, issuing orders to brand-new recruits\, and assuming command for his mortally wounded platoon leader. For the rest of the day Hagemeister moved from one position to another\, treating and encouraging his comrades\, coming under sniper fire\, destroying enemy weapons\, killing enemy soldiers\, and moving his wounded men to safety. A little more than a year later\, Hagemeister was back in the United States\, a few days from being discharged from the Army\, when he was told that he was to be awarded the Medal of Honor. \nDuring this webinar\, Mr. Hagemeister discussed what the Medal of Honor means to him and how it has affected his life\, adding his unique perspective on the values celebrated by the CMOHF Character Development Program. \n  \nCharles Hagemeister was born the youngest of four siblings in Lincoln\, Nebraska\, in 1946. His father had lumberyards all over Nebraska\, but died when Hagemeister was only three years old. His mother then became what he calls “the best role model\,” teaching him the values of honesty and hard work. After graduating high school\, Hagemeister attended college for one semester before choosing to skip a semester\, during which he was drafted. \nHagemeister was awarded the Medal of Honor by President Lyndon Johnson during a White House ceremony on May 14\, 1968. Read Mr. Hagemeister’s full citation here. Hagemeister then reenlisted and later became a commissioned officer. He stayed in the Army until 1990\, when he retired as a lieutenant colonel. \nCharles Hagemeister followed his military service by working as a defense contractor\, conducting large-unit computer training simulations\, in which he simulated capabilities a future enemy might present to Americans in battle. \n  \n\nCathy Ehlers-Metcalf joined the Medal of Honor Character Development Program as Vice President of Education in 2015. \n  \n  \n  \n  \nWATCH THE WEBINAR RECORDING\n  \nThe Medal of Honor Character Development Program is a free resource that teaches character through stories of the Medal of Honor recipients. The CDP is a cross-curriculum supplement and complies with National/State Common Core standards. The Medal of Honor Character Development Program incorporates the ideals of courage and selfless service into the middle and high school curriculum to build character and promote responsible citizenship.  The program is FREE and includes 50+ lesson plans supported by over 100 video vignettes of the Medal of Honor Recipients themselves\, as well as videos of hometown heroes selected by the Medal of Honor Recipients as “Citizen Heroes.”

SUMMARY:Essentials for Learning: Encouraging Dramatic Play and Creative Expression in Early Childhood
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dr. Ann Barbour\, Professor Emerita\, Early Childhood Education\nSponsored by Gryphon House \nWATCH THE WEBINAR RECORDING\nWithin 24 hours after the live event\, a CE certificate is emailed to live attendees who logged in online with their email address. To get your CE certificate for logging in live by phone\, or for watching the recording\, join the Early Learning Book Chats community and go to the Webinar Archives folder to take the CE quiz. As a member of the community\, you’ll also have access to additional resources and online discussions. \nChildren’s love of learning is sometimes lost in the focus on standards-based curriculum. Concerns about school readiness and subsequent academic success can discourage many PreK and primary grade teachers\, as well as parents\, from building on children’s natural playfulness and creativity as mediums for learning. \nHigh quality play experiences help children acquire basic academic skills. They also provide frameworks for developing the intellectual and creative dispositions necessary to adapt to and thrive in rapidly changing times – and they make classrooms joyful places for learning. Ann Barbour taught how playful learning\, dramatic play and other creative activities in particular\, help children develop foundational skills for success in school and in life. \nTopics included: \n\nConnections between imaginative play and the underlying competencies and approaches to learning that ready children for the future\nIdeas for classroom designs\, activities and responsive interactions that facilitate learning through play\nWays to elicit family support in extending creative play as a medium for learning\n\n  \nA former classroom teacher\, Dr. Ann Barbour has trained early childhood educators for nearly three decades. The role of play in learning figures prominently in the courses she teaches. She was a content advisor for all 650 episodes of the Peabody Awarded “A Place of Our Own” and “Los Niños en Su Casa\,” the sister television series designed to enrich the learning experiences of preschool-age children. She has worked with school district personnel\, answered questions about school readiness on PBS Parents’ website\, and authored several books on appropriate practice\, including Play Today: Building the Young Brain through Creative Expression. \n  \nWATCH THE WEBINAR RECORDING\n  \n \n  \nGryphon House\, Inc. is an award-winning publisher of early childhood resources for teachers and parents.

SUMMARY:How to Create Great Courses with Illume\, the World’s Largest Database of Learning Materials
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Diane F. Quandt\, Associate Professor of Education\, College of New Rochelle\nSponsored by Illume Learning \nWe’re sorry but the recording for this edWebinar is no longer available. \nTraditionally\, the process of creating university and high school courses has been extremely time consuming — often consuming dozens and dozens of hours. Moreover\, the results often fail to truly motivate\, stimulate\, and engage students. \nIn this webinar\, learn about Illume\, the world’s largest database of learning materials\, a free resource to help you build great courses. Illume streamlines the course creation process\, dramatically shortening the preparation time for instructors and yielding stimulating and engaging learning materials for students. \nIllume does this by offering the world’s largest database of syllabi; reading lists; course notes; text and trade books; newspaper\, magazine and journal articles; videos; case studies; simulations; problem sets; lecture presentations; and other instructor and student materials.  It has just been introduced and it is completely free for all to use. While it is designed for university instructors\, high school teachers looking to assign learning materials beyond textbooks will also find it very useful. \nThis webinar showed how to quickly and easily navigate Illume’s enormous database and use its many tools to create the best possible courses to truly motivate\, engage and stimulate your students. This webinar will be of of most interest to college and university instructors\, and also to high school teachers creating high level courses. \nLearn more about Illume. \n  \n \n  \nDr. Diane Quandt has been an Associate Professor of Education at the College of New Rochelle for more than 20 years.  She holds a B.A from Vassar College\, an M.S. from Syracuse University in Special Education\, an M.Ed and Ed.D. from Teachers College of Columbia University in Reading and Learning Disabilities\, and Special Education. \n  \n  \nIllume makes it easy for instructors to (i) view the syllabi\, reading lists\, course notes\, and presentations of their colleagues around the world for ideas\, and (ii) find and evaluate learning materials to assign to their students from the most comprehensive list of materials available anywhere. Moreover\, Illume allows instructors to save material for further review by “Marking It For Review.” Instructors can later go back to see a complete list of learning materials with links to the original source for scheduling.

Children need to their parents and caregivers to read\, write\, sing\, talk\, and play with them every day in order for children to be ready for school and to be ready to learn how to read. These activities not only help children develop in all areas – physical\, cognitive\, and social/emotional – they help build the foundation for later reading success. With very young children\, ages birth to 24 months\, we are not talking about teaching children how to read. The focus is on laying a strong foundation for later reading which is early literacy. Early literacy is what children know about communication\, language (verbal and nonverbal)\, reading\, and writing before they can actually read or write. The way we do these activities with young children makes a difference in the development of early literacy skills. \nThis webinar offered a summary of early literacy as it applies to babies and toddlers\, and offers suggestions for ways to support early literacy in enjoyable ways while sharing books throughout the day. The target audience for this webinar includes administrators\, educators\, and caregivers for young children ages birth to 24 months. \n  \nAmy Read is an Early Literacy Program Manager for a Public Library system. In this position she provides early literacy professional development programs for Early Childhood Educators as well as parents. While commercial products\, come\, go\, and/or are swallowed up by larger companies\, edtech and digital content providers are developing an increasing number of tools for learners of all ages to store and retrieve collected resources. Some of these solutions address libraries’ “container problem” – how to provide access to a collection in its entirety in a user-friendly delivery system. Some provide educators portals for warehousing instructional materials. Others address students’ curation needs. \nIn this session\, the presenter shared an array of curation solutions\, their strengths and limitations\, and strategies to morph tools and create workarounds where services still need work.
