SUMMARY:Using Neuroscience to Improve Learning Fractions
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dr. Valorie N. Salimpoor\, Neuroscientist\nSponsored by Cignition\, Inc. \nWATCH THE WEBINAR RECORDING\nIf you view the recording and would like a CE certificate\, join the The Brain and Learning community and go to the Webinar Archives folder to take the CE quiz. \nThere is no need to convince a math educator that students have difficulty with fractions. Nonetheless\, fractions are critical building blocks for future algebra and other math topics. In this presentation\, take an easy-to-digest look into how the brain processes mathematical information to gain a better understanding of how we can optimize learning fractions and other mathematical topics more generally. Dr. Valorie N. Salimpoor shared: \n\nHow to increase the number of pathways in the brain that represent a concept\nHow to improve the integration of these pathways to facilitate re-activation\nHow to strengthen connections between neural pathways\n\nThese strategies can help students develop a deeper and more meaningful understanding of the material and facilitate efficient recall of information. Learn the important role that working memory\, attention\, and visuospatial abilities play in learning fractions and mathematics more generally\, and how to improve conceptual understanding by changing the degree to which these cognitive processes are required to understand a mathematical concept. Discover techniques that can be used to lower cognitive demands until a full understanding of the concepts are achieved. Learn how to use neuroscience to improve your students’ learning of fractions concepts. \n  \n Dr. Valorie Salimpoor holds a Master’s Degree in Clinical Developmental Psychology with a focus on development of complex cognitive function in children and a Ph.D. in Psychology with a focus on understanding the brain’s dopaminergic reward systems. Her current work focuses on how dopamine can be used to enhance learning. She was also a researcher at Stanford University examining neural correlates of mathematical processing in children. Currently\, Valorie is a consultant at Cignition.com to develop educational video games that apply the principles of neuroscience towards learning mathematics. Her work has been published in top journals (Science\, Nature Neuroscience\, PNAS\, etc.)\, and she has received prestigious national and international awards and worldwide media coverage for her research. \n  \nWATCH THE WEBINAR RECORDING\n  \nCignition Transforms the Way Students Learn Mathematics While Maximizing the Potential of Every Child. We develop immersive online virtual worlds to help students conceptually understand mathematics and achieve computational fluency. The games within our world have a deep integration of neuroscientific learning principles\, effective pedagogy\, and engaging game-play design.

SUMMARY:Understanding and Treating the Behavior of Students with Autism
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Nina Finkler\, M.Ed.\, LDT/C\, BCBA\, president of Nina Finkler Autism Services\nSponsored by Monarch Center for Autism\, STAR Autism Support\, and VizZle \nWATCH THE WEBINAR RECORDING\nIf you view the recording and would like a CE certificate\, join the Teaching Students with Autism community and go to the Webinar Archives folder to take the CE quiz. \nStudents with autism present many unique challenges within a classroom environment. At the core of the diagnosis are deficits/delays in the areas of socialization\, communication\, and sensory functioning that can result in inappropriate and maladaptive behavior. The behaviors may be harmful to the student or others\, and can also interfere with learning or be socially stigmatizing. In order to effectively address these behaviors\, educators must first understand them\, then develop individualized treatment strategies. \nAfter showing how to identify each of the four functions of behavior\, this webinar provided specific strategies to treat behaviors\, explain ways to collect data to monitor behaviors\, and discuss the importance of reinforcement. The webinar will benefit both special and general education teachers\, and paraprofessionals\, CST\, and administrators. \nNina Finkler is the president of Nina Finkler Autism Services\, LLC based in East Windsor\, New Jersey.
