SUMMARY:Improve Your School’s Performance Levels with Medical Diagnostic Protocols
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dr. Bruce Hayes\, Former Superintendent\, Author\, and Researcher \nWATCH THE WEBINAR RECORDING\nIf you attended the live session\, you’ll be emailed a CE certificate within 24 hours of the webinar. If you view the recording and would like a CE certificate\, join the Leadership 3.0 community and go to the Webinar Archives folder to take the CE quiz. \nRecent research shows that school leaders can achieve significantly higher levels of performance by adapting the problem-solving protocols of diagnostic medicine. Medical discovery and diagnostic processes are collaborative and evidence-based\, resulting in prescriptions that are targeted\, research-based\, and replicable. Education spends significant resources treating symptoms\, rather than root causes\, of problems because of incomplete data. \nImprovement plans are 200% more likely to succeed if leaders utilize research-based data that informs them of stakeholder perceptions and behaviors (University of Chicago\, 2012). Clinical Practice in education starts with listening to district stakeholders whose concerns are often symptoms of significant underlying issues. \nIn this webinar\, Dr. Bruce Hayes explored how stakeholders’ qualitative insights can be combined with professional observations and education research. This “clinical data” is vital for the development of successful\, evidence-based improvement plans that address causes of underperformance\, prescribe targeted remedies\, accurately predict outcomes and influence adult behaviors that drive higher student outcomes. We will explore how to use technology like Excel and Google Tools to collect and organize data to better get to root causes of problems and to stop wasting resources treating only symptoms. Learn how to measure and analyze stakeholder behaviors\, perceptions\, and the frequency of research-based indicators of commitment to and capacity for improvement. \nThe work of educators in teams\, where individuals interact outside of their specific role responsibilities\, also will be explored for the potential to create synergies\, increase shared expectations\, and impact the learning culture of schools. In addition\, the use of clinical data to address the newly proposed requirements of ESSA will be discussed. \nLearn how to improve your school’s performance levels with medical diagnostic protocols. This webinar is designed for PreK-12 district and school administrators\, educators\, and staff who are engaged in efforts to improve organizational performance and increase student achievement. \n  \nDr. Bruce Hayes has been involved in educational reform on five continents. Trained as an historian at Union College\, he received his Masters from Colgate University\, and his Doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania. Bruce has been a teacher\, coach\, and served for twenty years as a district superintendent. As superintendent\, he led the reorganization of every aspect of the program\, facilities\, and organization of each district he served involving hundreds of staff\, students\, and residents. \nIn addition\, Bruce served as adjunct university faculty and on national committees on school desegregation\, educational technology\, and school improvement\, and as a representative of the U.S. on international studies of educational reform. He has worked with Native American communities and as consultant in the pharmaceutical and music industries. \nSince 2005\, Bruce has been a principal of LeadershipEnergies\, LLC\, where he assists\, guides\, and partners with districts and schools to optimize educational opportunity and student achievement. SUMMARY:Supporting the Development of Children’s Approaches to Learning with Music and Movement Activities
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Ellen Acuna and Alex Farkas\, Music Together In-School Services Mentors\nSponsored by Music Together \nWATCH THE WEBINAR RECORDING\nIf you attended the live session\, you’ll be emailed a CE certificate within 24 hours of the webinar. If you view the recording and would like a CE certificate\, join the Arts & Music in Early Learning community and go to the Webinar Archives folder to take the CE quiz. \nAs an educator\, you know that young children learn in different ways; they have different learning styles\, classroom habits\, and attitudes toward learning. These learning behaviors fall under the developmental domain “Approaches to Learning\,” which encompasses not what children learn\, but how they learn – how they engage in learning and classroom activities to acquire new information. Having a positive “approach” toward learning lays the groundwork for development in other domains essential to school and life success. \nIn this webinar\, Ellen Acuna and Alex Farkas\, Music Together In-School Services Mentors\, explored the many ways music-making very naturally and deeply supports a child’s positive approach toward learning. They also explored how music can serve as a lens through which you can learn about a child’s learning style and disposition toward learning\, which can be particularly useful in the beginning of the school year. This webinar will benefit educators working with toddlers\, preschoolers\, and kindergarteners. \n  \n Ellen Acuna has eighteen years of experience as an early childhood music and movement specialist working with children birth through age five and their parents and caregivers. She has a B.A. from West Chester State College (now West Chester University)\, where she studied Speech Communications. In addition to being a Music Together In-School teaching mentor for other music and movement specialists\, she presents professional development workshops for music specialists and classroom teachers\, and has presented at national conferences. \n  \n  \n Alexandra Farkas\, M.A.T.\, has many years of experience as an early childhood music and movement specialist\, and holds a New Jersey State Teacher certification for K-12 Music. Alex has served as the general music teacher at a K-8 school and as a private voice teacher. She is currently a Music Together In School teaching mentor\, as well as a teacher of Music Together in both school settings and family classes. Alex received her Bachelor of Music in Music Education and her Master of Arts in Teaching from Westminster Choir College of Rider University. She is also an active performer and musician\, and has performed at Carnegie Hall and Avery Fisher Hall. \n  \nWATCH THE WEBINAR RECORDING\n  \n At Music Together\, we understand the importance of music in early childhood—from birth\, in fact. Because the truth is\, most people are born with enough music aptitude to play in a symphony orchestra when they are adults\, if they choose. But first we must learn how to “speak music”—to take the musical instrument we all have\, ourselves\, developing that musical capacity from a very young age. The sounds we make\, our movements\, our rhythms—these are the building blocks of music and of early childhood learning. And that’s what Music Together is all about.

SUMMARY:Engineering Classrooms with Visual Strategies for Autism Success
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Linda Hodgdon\, M.Ed.\, CCC-SLP\, and author\nSponsored by Monarch Center for Autism\, STAR Autism Support\, and VizZle \nWATCH THE WEBINAR RECORDING\nIf you attended the live session\, you’ll be emailed a CE certificate within 24 hours of the webinar. If you view the recording and would like a CE certificate\, join the Teaching Students with Autism community and go to the Webinar Archives folder to take the CE quiz. \nWe’ve learned a lot about how to help students on the Autism Spectrum achieve success at school. But research shows that half the time we don’t apply what we know works. Using a few simple tools and tweaks can change stress into easy\, meltdowns into smiles\, and fear into fun. \nIn this webinar\, Linda Hodgdon\, M.Ed.\, CCC-SLP\, and author\, highlighted her list of 12 “must haves” for every classroom with students with Autism Spectrum Disorders. When and how you use these tools is important\, so she also covered how to integrate them easily and meaningfully into classroom routines. \nViewers will learn to: \n\nRecognize situations where communication breakdowns can affect the student’s understanding\, behavior and participation\nUse specific visual supports that have significantly improved student behavior and independence to participate successfully in school and life opportunities\nDevelop a communication style that will help students achieve independence and success\n\nOne thing we know is that the majority of students with ASD (and lots of other students\, too) are visual learners. You’ll see lots of visual tools on Linda’s “essentials” list. Use it as a checklist for your setting. \nThis webinar will benefit those who work with preschool through middle school students with ASD\, including SLPs\, classroom teachers\, support staff\, and therapists who work with students with ASD\, communication challenges\, behavior problems\, or related special learning needs. \nJoin the Teaching Students with Autism community to participate in online discussions with peers\, for invitations to upcoming webinars\, to view past webinar recordings\, to take a quiz and receive a CE certificate for a past webinar\, and for access to more resources. \n Linda Hodgdon\, M.Ed.\, CCC-SLP is a Speech-Language Pathologist who is internationally known as a pioneer in developing the use of visual strategies for students on the autism spectrum. She is a strong believer that easy-to-use visual tools have great value for students and their communication partners. Linda’s programs share practical\, effective ideas that reflect “best-practices.” Originally\, Linda’s teaching focused on using “low tech” visual tools and supports to aid students. As smartphones and iPads have become available\, she has explored taking visual strategies to a new “high tech” level and she’s thrilled with the possibilities. Linda is the author of the popular best-selling book\, Visual Strategies for Improving Communication: Practical Supports for Autism Spectrum Disorders. \n  \nWATCH THE WEBINAR RECORDING\nMonarch Center for Autism\, a division of Bellefaire JCB\, is located in Cleveland\, Ohio.
