SUMMARY:Teaching Students How to Study Effectively for Tests: A Simple Method that Really Works
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Gretchen Wegner\, M.Ed\, Academic Life Coach\, Educational Consultant\, and Founder of the Anti-Boring Approach to Powerful Studying™\nSponsored by The Anti-Boring Approach to Powerful Studying™ \nWATCH THE WEBINAR RECORDING\nIf you attended the live session\, you’ll be emailed a CE certificate within 24 hours of the webinar. If you view the recording and would like a CE certificate\, join the PD in Action community and go to the Webinar Archives folder to take the CE quiz. \nIn all areas of education\, we expect students to study for the tests we give them. Rarely\, however\, do schools spend significant effort teaching students how to study. Although many teachers do provide a strategy or two\, it remains an epidemic that if students study at all\, they do it in the most inefficient and ineffective (and boring!) way possible – by reviewing their textbook and/or their notes. In this webinar\, learn about a simple fix for this problem. \nAcademic Life Coach Gretchen Wegner shared the #1 study strategy that every educator should know (but most don’t) to transform his or her students’ ability to take charge of their own learning and prepare for tests self-sufficiently and with less stress. Gretchen will walk us through The Study Cycle\, a unique model that takes only ten minutes to teach to students from elementary through high school. You will walk away from this recorded session with: \n• A solid understanding of what is happening in the brain when students learn\n• A simple\, engaging demonstration for how to teach students to study better\n• Five easy ways to incorporate this effective study strategy into your classroom without interrupting your current curriculum \nThis session will benefit K-12 educators\, especially those working with middle school students and higher. All classroom teachers\, administrators\, learning specialists\, special ed coordinators\, tutors\, and coaches who want to support their students in becoming more efficient\, effective\, self-reliant learners are invited. Learn how to help your students feel less stressed\, and more prepared and capable while performing better on tests. \nAbout the Presenter \nGretchen Wegner is an academic life coach and educational consultant with over 20 years of experience teaching using holistic approaches to learning that balance of playfulness and rigor. Most recently\, she has become an internationally-recognized expert in how to build students’ executive function skills\, teaching teens a unique system for time management\, organization and studying called The Anti-Boring Approach to Powerful Studying™. Not only has Gretchen coached hundreds of students in middle school through grad school\, she now trains educators all over the world in her unique\, powerful\, and research-based system for transforming students into voracious\, organized learners through her signature courses The Art of Inspiring Students to Study Strategically and the Anti-Boring Approach™ Coach Training Program. Maybe they’re English learners. Maybe they have diagnosed learning disabilities or behavioral issues. Maybe they’re underachieving for reasons that are unknown. They have been overlooked\, underserved\, or frustrated\, and they’re not learning as they should. Until now. Until you. \nIn this webinar\, Doug Fisher presented a thoughtful and practical approach to achieving breakthrough success with linguistically and culturally diverse students who struggle in school. Combining elements of the SIOP® Model and the FIT Teaching® approach\, Doug shared how he and his fellow authors Jana Echevarría and Nancy Frey have taken stock of what we know about excellent instruction and distilled it into five guiding principles. Based on their book\, How to Reach the Hard to Teach: Excellent Instruction for Those Who Need It Most\, Doug walked through each of these guiding principles to support struggling students: \n\nSet high expectations\nProvide equitable access to the core curriculum through differentiation\nUse ongoing assessment and real-time data to inform instruction\nAttend to language development – both English and academic\nCreate a supportive classroom climate\n\nLearn specific practices associated with each principle and how to employ these practices in your classrooms\, ensuring that all students have the opportunity to learn and to receive optimal support for their learning. SUMMARY:Beyond Consequences: A New Look at Fairness and How to Reduce the Use of Discipline Techniques in the Classroom
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Nancy Bruski\, MA\, LCSW\, Early Childhood Consultant\, Wise Choice Guidance\nSponsored by Kaplan Early Learning \nWATCH THE WEBINAR RECORDING\nIf you attended the live session\, you’ll be emailed a CE certificate within 24 hours of the webinar. If you view the recording and would like a CE certificate\, join the Classroom Management for Early Learning community and go to the Webinar Archives folder to take the CE quiz. \nTeachers often focus on the search for the perfect consequence to challenging behaviors in the classroom\, rather than on being strategic and empathic in engaging children’s cooperation. Young children don’t learn positive behavior through being sent away from play centers. Rather\, they learn from teachers’ coaching them and intervening in play situations to resolve conflicts. \nIn this webinar\, look at the concept of “fairness” in a new way that enables teachers to recognize that every child has an equal right to have his/her needs met\, but not all children’s needs are the same. This strategy frees teachers to make small exceptions and set a tone in the classroom for relaxed acceptance that we are all working on learning skills on different timeframes and do not all find the same things easy or hard. \nEarly Childhood Consultant Nancy Bruski provided a framework for creating compassionate classrooms in which teachers are free to meet individual needs while maintaining group cohesion and validating children’s feelings so that each child feels like a valued member of the classroom community. Specific strategies for accomplishing these goals will be provided during this live\, interactive event. \nThe session is designed for preschool and kindergarten educators. \nAbout the Presenter \nNancy Bruski is a clinical social worker with over 35 years of experience providing therapeutic services to young children and families\, as well as teacher training\, parent education\, and mental health consulting. Her passion is to help parents and teachers become more psychologically sensitive to children. Nancy enhances parents’ and teachers’ skills through providing a philosophy of teaching and raising children\, as well as providing specific intervention strategies that support the development of children’s social competence\, responsibility\, and self-esteem. She is a frequent presenter of workshops and consultations throughout the Chicago area and across the United States. Parents and teachers often express their appreciation for her detailed and specific strategies that they can take back to their homes and classrooms and begin implementing right away. She is the author of The Insightful Teacher: Reflective Strategies to Shape Your Early Childhood Classroom. Nancy has also worked in a variety of mental health settings as well as at a nationally accredited full-day preschool program\, and as a faculty member at two colleges in the Chicago area. \nJoin the Classroom Management for Early Learning community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming webinars\, view past webinars\, take a quiz to receive a CE certificate for a past webinar\, and access free resources. \nWATCH THE WEBINAR RECORDING\n Kaplan Early Learning Company is a leading international provider of products and services that enhance children’s learning.

SUMMARY:Now I Have to Teach Coding? A Beginner's Guide
DESCRIPTION:Presented by James Denby\, Curriculum and course designer for IdeaDrivenEducation and Eduro Learning and Common Sense Ambassador; with Robin Ulster\, Curriculum and course designer for IdeaDrivenEducation and Eduro Learning\nHosted by Common Sense Education and Sponsored by Symantec \nWATCH THE WEBINAR RECORDING\nIf you attended the live session\, you’ll be emailed a CE certificate within 24 hours of the webinar. If you view the recording and would like a CE certificate\, join the Digital Learning & Leadership community and go to the Webinar Archives folder to take the CE quiz. \nWith the literacy of coding emerging as a “must” of 21st century learning\, our already complex jobs suddenly seem to be getting more complicated. Teachers\, however\, don’t have to be masters of JavaScript or Ruby to give students the tools they need. Concepts like computational and design thinking\, or connecting to the language of code to solve problems and create content\, don’t have to be as complicated (or intimidating) as they sound. \nThis webinar focused on ways you can start incorporating these elements into your classes without having to attend a three-month coding boot camp first yourself. James Denby and Robin Ulster shared: \n\nAccessible tools\nA problem-solving approach\nStrategies to inspire and challenge students (and yourself) to approach problems like coders\n\nThis webinar will benefit educators and administrators. \nAbout the Presenters \nJames Denby is a Curriculum and course designer for IdeaDrivenEducation and Eduro Learning. He is also a Common Sense Ambassador. James has had the opportunity to work with teachers and students in North and South America\, Europe\, and Asia. He sees technology as a tool to unleash creativity and give voice to powerful ideas. Rather than simply being adept consumers of content\, James believes we can help students become creators and content makers through coding and design. These tools can put students at the forefront of tackling the problems they see around them. \nRobin Ulster is a Curriculum and course designer for IdeaDrivenEducation and Eduro Learning. Robin is a teacher and workshop leader who believes in the potential of technology to give voice to and empower individuals and groups. She has worked with students and teachers in Canada\, the United States\, Turkey\, Colombia\, Switzerland\, Monaco\, and Thailand during her 20+ year teaching career. Robin wants to break down barriers so that all learners feel empowered to use technology to solve problems in society and daily life. \nJoin the Digital Learning & Leadership community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming webinars\, view past webinars\, take a quiz to receive a CE certificate for a past webinar\, and access free resources. \nWATCH THE WEBINAR RECORDING\n  \nCommon Sense Education provides teachers and schools with free research-based classroom tools to help students harness technology for learning and life. SUMMARY:Research-Based Tools and Strategies Proven to Help Beginner Readers
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Eyal Rav-Noy and Tzippy Rav-Noy\, Co-Founders of Capit Learning\nSponsored by Capit Learning \nWATCH THE WEBINAR RECORDING\nIf you attended the live session\, you’ll be emailed a CE certificate within 24 hours of the webinar. If you view the recording and would like a CE certificate\, join the Instructional Strategies for Reading Improvement K-8 community and go to the Webinar Archives folder to take the CE quiz. \nResearchers have long known that phonemic awareness is highly correlated with individual differences in childrens’ word-reading skills. Training students in phonemic awareness skills and letter-sound knowledge is recommended in both the United States (NRP\, 2000) and the United Kingdom (Rose\, 2006). But why do some students struggle so much when learning their sounds? How can teachers help their students remember their sounds? Does the research recommend a particular method for teaching these foundational reading skills? \nIn this webinar Eyal Rav-Noy and Tzippy Rav-Noy\, Co-Founders of Capit Learning\, discussed the National Reading Panel Report\, an evidence-based assessment of the scientific research literature on reading and its implications for reading instruction. They shared three tools the report recommends for early readers that often are overlooked by many teachers\, researchers\, and curriculum developers. Learn about these research-based tools that will increase your young students’ phonemic awareness skills and letter-sound knowledge. Learn how to easily integrate the tools into your existing lesson plans and classroom. \nThis webinar is designed for Pre-K through grade one teachers\, transitional kindergarten teachers\, reading specialists\, and ELA coordinators. School librarians and special education teachers also will benefit from this recorded session. \nAbout the Presenters \n\n \n\nEyal and Tzippy Rav-Noy\, Co-Founders of Capit Learning\, have taught thousands of students—both children and adults—to read both English and Hebrew\, for over 18 years.\nThey went on to create their own reading programs which are implemented in schools across the country. Eyal and Tzippy have trained dozens of teachers and reading specialists\, and they tutor special education and special needs students at Capit Learning Center in Los Angeles. \nJoin the Instructional Strategies for Reading Improvement K-8 community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming webinars\, view past webinars\, take a quiz to receive a CE certificate for a past webinar\, and access free resources. \nWATCH THE WEBINAR RECORDING\n CAPIT Reading teaches students to read without “verbal instructions.” Students play with sounds and intuitively create letters\, blend words\, and assemble sentences.
