SUMMARY:Engage Students and Enhance Your World Language Classroom
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Gisele Vazquez Falls\, Teacher and Department Chair of World Languages\, Virginia Public Schools\nSponsored by Rosetta Stone \nWATCH THE WEBINAR RECORDING\nIf you attended the live session\, you’ll be emailed a CE certificate within 24 hours of the webinar. If you view the recording and would like a CE certificate\, join the Using Technology for Language Instruction community and go to the Webinar Archives folder to take the CE quiz. \nAs a group\, students come to us with varied interests and abilities\, a myriad of language and cultural backgrounds\, and a mixture of learning styles. As individual learners\, their language success increasingly depends on access to personalized language learning\, and authentic and engaging lessons that will prepare them for their own 21st century global futures. Class time devoted largely to teacher-led instruction limits a student’s ability to practice speaking in their new language. To eventually own a language a student must use it. Combining traditional instruction and EdTech provides a comprehensive approach that develops speaking and listening skills needed by students to build and strengthen their language confidence. Access to technology in a blended learning classroom increases student practice time\, offers immediate and effective speech feedback\, and gives teachers added opportunities to provide individualized attention to students. \nGisele Vazquez Falls\, Spanish Teacher and Dept. Chair of World Languages in the Global Studies and World Languages Academy at Tallwood High School\, Virginia Beach\, VA\, presents on how to better engage your students and enhance your world language classroom. Gisele will share: \n• Strategies for incorporating online resources into your daily lesson plans\n• Steps to successfully mix traditional and online instruction in your language program to differentiate instruction\n• Tips to maximize teacher reach\n• Ways to increase student engagement and language production time to build proficiency both during and outside of class \nAll K-12 language educators are invited to watch this recording webinar. \nAbout the Presenter \nGisele Vazquez Falls is a Spanish Teacher and Dept. Chair of World Languages in the Global Studies and World Languages Academy at Tallwood High School\, Virginia Beach\, VA. Gisele has over 20 years of teaching experience\, and she is a self-directed\, enthusiastic educator with a strong commitment to student development and the learning experience. Her skills include designing challenging\, enriching and innovative lessons that address the diverse needs of students. Gisele is finishing a master’s in Spanish language and culture at the University of Salamanca. \n  \nJoin the Using Technology for Language Instruction community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming webinars\, view past webinars\, take a quiz to receive a CE certificate for a past webinar\, and access free resources. \nWATCH THE WEBINAR RECORDING\n Rosetta Stone Inc. provides cutting-edge interactive technology that is changing the way the world learns languages. The company’s proprietary learning techniques—acclaimed for their power to unlock the natural language-learning ability in everyone—are used by schools\, businesses\, government organizations and millions of individuals around the world. If you view the recording and would like a CE certificate\, join the Blended Learning community and go to the Webinar Archives folder to take the CE quiz. \nExtensive use of discourse in the classroom is a key practice to support the learning of English while learning mathematics. English learners are in varying stages of English language development\, and discourse will increase their productive (oral and written) and receptive (listening and reading) language functions in addition to their comprehension of mathematics concepts. The Standards for Mathematical Practice expect students to reason\, construct viable arguments\, and critique the reasoning of others among other practices. Thus\, classroom teachers need to provide support for students’ English language development to engage in these practices. \nIn this webinar\, Mathematics Education Consultant Dr. Susie W. Håkansson shares the rationale for using discourse in the classroom\, the role of productive and receptive language functions in the learning of mathematics\, as well as examples of how to increase discourse in the classroom. \nDr. Håkansson’s presentation covers: \n\nChallenges in learning English\nUsing discourse (including the role of productive and receptive language functions)\nLanguage in the mathematics classroom\nCognitively-demanding mathematics tasks\nExamples of discourse in the classroom\nEquity and excellence\n\nLearn how to support your English learners while they are learning mathematics. SUMMARY:Anxiety Disorders and Autism
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Jeffrey A. Lox\, MSSA\, LISW-S\, ACSW\, Chief Operating Officer of Bellefaire JCB and Associate Director of Wingspan Care Group\nSponsored by Monarch Center for Autism\, STAR Autism Support\, and VizZle \nWATCH THE WEBINAR RECORDING\nIf you attended the live session\, you’ll be emailed a CE certificate within 24 hours of the webinar. If you view the recording and would like a CE certificate\, join the Teaching Students with Autism community and go to the Webinar Archives folder to take the CE quiz. \nA variety of comorbid mental health conditions occur regularly for many children and adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Anxiety disorders\, anxious symptoms\, and developmentally appropriate “worries” present themselves in students with ASD in as many ways as they do in more typically developing children\, and they often lead to behavioral challenges for students with ASD. There are highly effective\, well-known behavioral and cognitive strategies and interventions for helping manage anxiety but these methods are largely geared toward more “typical” youth. The ways of training professionals to assist youth with anxiety symptoms and conditions focus almost exclusively on language-driven\, cognitive methods\, which aren’t always effective with children on the autism spectrum. In this webinar\, Jeffrey A. Lox\, MSSA\, LISW-S\, ACSW\, and Chief Operating Officer of Bellefaire JCB demonstrates how to: \n\n Identify common anxiety-based conditions\, symptoms\, and behaviors exhibited by students with ASD\nReview Cognitive Behavioral and Family Systems Interventions for anxiety-based issues\nDiscuss challenges and potential methods for successful use of anxiety reducing and managing skills and strategies for youth with ASD\n\nThis recorded webinar will benefit educators of children of all ages\, behavior specialists\, and SLP\, OT\, PT\, music\, art\, and recreation therapists. \n\nAbout the Presenter \nJeffrey A. SUMMARY:Music Play: Before You Play Music\, You Must Play WITH Music!
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Devi Borton\, M.A.\, Early Childhood Music Specialist\, Mentor\, and Teacher Trainer at Music Together Worldwide\nSponsored by Music Together \nWATCH THE WEBINAR RECORDING\nIf you attended the live session\, you’ll be emailed a CE certificate within 24 hours of the webinar. If you view the recording and would like a CE certificate\, join the Music in Early Learning community and go to the Webinar Archives folder to take the CE quiz. \nBefore young children can play (i.e.\, perform) music they must play with music! While most of us think of music class as teacher-led songs\, a developmentally appropriate music education experience fosters child-initiated music play and provides the opportunity for individual children to focus on their own musical ideas – at all ages. Research also highlights how play is an important part of children’s development of the skills and dispositions that are essential to learning and classroom engagement. One such type of play activity that can support a child’s development and learning is music play. \nIn this webinar\, early childhood music specialist Devi Borton explores how to create a child-centered\, playful music environment that encourages and values children’s own ways of making music\, allows each child to take ownership of his or her music learning\, and affords each teacher an opportunity to maximize the learning benefits of music play. Devi demonstrates some great songs that they can use to provide children with a rich musical “playground.” This recorded webinar will benefit educators working with toddlers\, preschoolers\, and kindergarteners. \nAbout the Presenter   \nDevi Borton has an extensive background in vocal performance\, dance\, and acting\, performing in numerous local theatre productions during her youth and starring on a locally produced television show in the Bay Area in California for four years. She began her adult professional career in the healing arts as a bodyworker\, birth educator\, doula\, and certified infant massage instructor. Devi has been a Music Together teacher and center director at FAM JAM! in Santa Fe\, NM\, since 2003. With a passion for bringing music to children and families in need\, she has been the Special Applications Coordinator and mentor for Music Together Worldwide since 2010. As a Music Together Teacher Trainer\, she trains new Music Together teachers across the globe and runs professional development workshops for current teachers. Devi holds a B.A. in Dance from UCLA\, an M.A. in Counseling Psychology from JFK University\, and is Music Together Certification Level II. \nJoin the Music in Early Learning community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming webinars\, view past webinars\, take a quiz to receive a CE certificate for a past webinar\, and access free resources. \nWATCH THE WEBINAR RECORDING\n At Music Together\, we understand the importance of music in early childhood—from birth\, in fact. Because the truth is\, most people are born with enough music aptitude to play in a symphony orchestra when they are adults\, if they choose. But first we must learn how to “speak music”—to take the musical instrument we all have\, ourselves\, developing that musical capacity from a very young age. The sounds we make\, our movements\, our rhythms—these are the building blocks of music and of early childhood learning. And that’s what Music Together is all about.

SUMMARY:Building a School Library in Kabul\, Afghanistan
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Sajia Darwish\, Junior at Mount Holyoke College\nSponsored by Girls Thinking Global \nWATCH THE WEBINAR RECORDING\nIf you attended the live session\, you’ll be emailed a CE certificate within 24 hours of the webinar. If you view the recording and would like a CE certificate\, join the Girls Thinking Global community and go to the Webinar Archives folder to take the CE quiz. \nThis webinar tells the story of the Baale Parwaz Library project that was co-founded by Sajia Darwish\, a junior at Mount Holyoke College\, who has been studying in the U.S with the support of AGFAF\, so she can return to help the Afghan people. \nSajia tells the incredible story of how she returned to her country\, and in one summer\, built a library at her former school\, Mohammad Asif Mayel School – a school of 3\,500 students that had no library. Within the first week home\, Sajia secured the interest of the principal and was also able to obtain the approval of the Ministry of Education to enclose space offered by the school to build and operate a school library. There were many challenges\, but Sajia completed the library in a very short time\, and named it Baale Parwaz (wings to fly) Library. \nSajia has said of her experience\, “Working on this project has been one of the most challenging and exhilarating experiences. It has fostered personal growth in many areas of my life. I have not only been able to connect with the Afghan people on a much deeper level than any other one of my stays in Kabul during the last seven years. But on a larger scale\, I have also learned how to create a counter model for the patriarchic society of Afghanistan through first empowering myself and then other girls and women.” \nThe library opened August 21\, 2016 with over 250 guests and officials in attendance. Here are some of the highlights of the library program thus far: \n\n400-500 young Afghan girls use the library daily\nThe library has over 2\,500 books and 100 reference books selected by the teachers and numerous circulation books (novels\, story books\, etc.)\nSeveral teachers use the library daily to prepare to teach their classes\nA local poet has donated 1\,000 digitized books that students will be able to read in the library on tablets AGFAF will provide\nSeveral reading clubs have been organized by grade across the grades\nThe students in the older reading club (7th-11th graders) have begun their own outreach program to the street children of Kabul\, most of whom are in 6th grade or younger and work on the streets to help support their families\nThey are working to make BPL digital! They plan to provide internet service\, computers and training in digital literacy\n\nLibrarians will be particularly interested in the story of building and growing this library. Sajia is very interested in making connections with librarians who have ideas for how they can continue to grow the program and make the most use of their limited resources for such a large number of students. \nAny educator who wants to be inspired by what can be accomplished by a young women with dedication to help her people should watch this recorded webinar! \nAbout the Presenter \nSajia Darwish was born in the year Taliban took over Afghanistan and never left the country until she was 13. In 2009\, she was one of ten students selected to attend the Seeds of Peace summer camp in Maine. That year after returning home she applied for high schools and got full scholarship to attend The Ethel Walker School in Connecticut. In 2014\, she enrolled in Mount Holyoke College and is currently a junior. \n  \nJoin the Girls Thinking Global community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming webinars\, view past webinars\, take a quiz to receive a CE certificate for a past webinar\, and access free resources. \n  \nWATCH THE WEBINAR RECORDING\n  \nGirls Thinking Global (GTG) is a global community of organizations serving girls and young women by leveraging technology to create a collaborative space that connects best practices\, knowledge\, and expertise.

SUMMARY:Personalizing Instruction Through the Library
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Michelle Luhtala\, Library Department Chair\, New Canaan High School\, CT\nSponsored by Mackin Educational Resources \nWATCH THE WEBINAR RECORDING\nIf you attended the live session\, you’ll be emailed a CE certificate within 24 hours of the webinar. If you view the recording and would like a CE certificate\, join the Emerging Tech community and go to the Webinar Archives folder to take the CE quiz. \nStudents today tend to customize their personal digital environments to suit their own interests\, abilities\, and desires. It is therefore increasingly difficult to engage them in “one size fits all” learning environments. This is just one of many reasons school districts and policymakers strive to address the distinct learning needs\, interests\, aspirations\, or cultural backgrounds of individual students – personalized learning. Michelle Luhtala (a 2015 Library Journal Mover & Shaker) explores how school librarians can enhance their learning communities’ capacity for personalized learning experiences through collaboration\, instructional partnership\, direct instruction\, professional development\, and leadership. \n \n  \nMichelle Luhtala is the Library Department Chair at New Canaan High School in Connecticut and was one of five school librarians named as a “Mover and Shaker” by Library Journal in 2015. She is the winner of the 2011 “I Love My Librarian” Award and the Library Association’s 2010 Outstanding Librarian Award. Rarely\, however\, do schools spend significant effort teaching students how to study. Although many teachers do provide a strategy or two\, it remains an epidemic that if students study at all\, they do it in the most inefficient and ineffective (and boring!) way possible – by reviewing their textbook and/or their notes. In this webinar\, learn about a simple fix for this problem. \nAcademic Life Coach Gretchen Wegner shared the #1 study strategy that every educator should know (but most don’t) to transform his or her students’ ability to take charge of their own learning and prepare for tests self-sufficiently and with less stress. Gretchen will walk us through The Study Cycle\, a unique model that takes only ten minutes to teach to students from elementary through high school. You will walk away from this recorded session with: \n• A solid understanding of what is happening in the brain when students learn\n• A simple\, engaging demonstration for how to teach students to study better\n• Five easy ways to incorporate this effective study strategy into your classroom without interrupting your current curriculum \nThis session will benefit K-12 educators\, especially those working with middle school students and higher. All classroom teachers\, administrators\, learning specialists\, special ed coordinators\, tutors\, and coaches who want to support their students in becoming more efficient\, effective\, self-reliant learners are invited. Learn how to help your students feel less stressed\, and more prepared and capable while performing better on tests. \nAbout the Presenter \nGretchen Wegner is an academic life coach and educational consultant with over 20 years of experience teaching using holistic approaches to learning that balance of playfulness and rigor. Early Childhood Consultant Dr. Pamela Phelps discussed child development and demonstrated how to view children’s behaviors from a different developmental window. \nShe shared: \n\nHow to assess children’s behaviors from a developmental window rather than as misbehavior that needs to be punished\nEffective techniques to implement to help young children learn appropriate social behaviors.\n\nEducators and administrators working with birth through kindergarten children are invited to this event. \nAbout the Presenter \nDr. Pamela Phelps has a Ph.D. in early childhood education and has owned and operated her own early childhood center for over 45 years. The Creative Pre-School is located in Tallahassee\, FL.
