SUMMARY:Preventing the Summer Slide with Audiobooks
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Mary Ann Scheuer\, Teacher Librarian for Berkeley USD\, CA\nSponsored by Tales2go \nWatch the Recording\nListen to the Podcast \nIf you attended the live session\, you’ll be emailed a CE certificate within 24 hours of the edWebinar. If you view the recording and would like a CE certificate\, join the Audio-Based Learning and Collaboration community and go to the edWebinar Archives folder to take the CE quiz. \nListening to professionally narrated audiobooks is a great way to prevent the “summer slide.” Children in low-income households fall behind an average of two months in reading during the summer. Summer learning loss accounts for two-thirds of the ninth grade achievement gap in reading between students from low-income households and their higher-income peers. \nIn this edWebinar\, Mary Ann Scheuer\, Teacher Librarian at Berkeley USD\, CA\, presents research findings from a 2016 study looking at the effect of adding a listening component to literacy instruction—in school and at home. She also specifically addresses its impact on student vocabulary\, reading comprehension and motivation to read. The study also found that students listening to audiobooks without paired text attained 58% of their annual reading gain in just ten weeks\, putting them three months ahead of the control students. Mary Ann discusses these and other key findings of the research. \nBeyond the merits of the study\, Mary Ann shares the benefits\, excitement and engagement of students listening to high-interest audiobooks at or above their current reading level that she has experienced first-hand. With new digital technologies\, it’s never been easier to support students on a year-round remote basis. \nThis recorded session is designed for PreK-12 librarians as well as reading coaches\, ELL specialists/teachers\, Title I teachers and administrators\, district librarians\, and classroom teachers. \nAbout the Presenter \nMary Ann Scheuer has 20 years’ experience in California schools\, as an English teacher and a librarian. She has served as an elementary teacher librarian in Berkeley USD since 2013\, creating a new role in this district. As an English teacher\, Mary Ann wrote a school-wide grant to fund audiobooks and regularly used these in her teaching. Now as a librarian\, she has led the way providing streaming access to audiobooks for all elementary students across her school district. She is currently doing action-research to determine the impact of audiobooks on struggling readers. Mary Ann regularly reviews books at her blog\, Great Kid Books. She also contributes to School Library Journal\, Kirkus Reviews and the Association of Children’s Librarians of Northern California. She has her MLIS from San José State University\, a teaching credential from U.C. Berkeley and an MSc from the London School of Economics. \nJoin the Audio-Based Learning and Collaboration community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming webinars\, view past edWebinars\, take a quiz to receive a CE certificate for a past edWebinar\, and access free resources. \nWatch the Recording\nTales2go is a partner in the fight for better literacy\, making it easier and more cost-effective to add a listening component to reading instruction. The service provides instant\, unlimited and simultaneous access to over 6\,700 high-interest audiobooks from leading publishers to use on desktops\, laptops and mobile devices in the classroom and beyond. \n \n \n \nListen to the Podcast\nWe’re happy to make podcasts available for selected panel discussions and interviews.\nIf you would like a CE certificate for this presentation\, watch the edWebinar recording and take the CE quiz. \nDownload here

SUMMARY:Discovery Learning for Infants and Toddlers: Treasure Basket Explorations
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Laura Wilhelm\, Ed.D.\, Associate Professor\, Early Childhood Education\, Oklahoma City University\nSponsored by Gryphon House \nWatch the Recording\nIf you attend the live session\, you’ll be emailed a CE certificate within 24 hours of the edWebinar. If you view the recording and would like a CE certificate\, join the Early Learning Book Chats community and go to the edWebinar Archives folder to take the CE quiz. \nPeople who work with older children may view infants and toddlers in terms of what they cannot do yet. Treasure baskets are a supplement to regularly planned curriculum activities that showcase the amazing capabilities of children between 6 and 36 months. These baskets employ heuristic learning which presents opportunities for the child to discover through five (and more) senses. “Heuristic\,” a new term for many of us\, comes from the same root as “eureka\,” which emphasizes discovery learning. These activities highlight how much longer very young children will attend to something when they are intrigued by it. \nIn this edWebinar\, Dr. Laura Wilhelm shares: \n\nHow and why to design treasure baskets with everyday household and natural objects at little or no cost\nWhy plastic mass-manufactured toys are less appealing with their similar temperature and textures\, bright colors\, and sometimes overpowering lights and sounds\nTeachers’ ideas about the best ways to incorporate heuristic activities within existing curriculum for 6- to 36-month-old children\n\nChildcare providers\, directors\, home visitors\, and mentors who work with infants and toddlers will benefit from this edWebinar. Whether you are a new or veteran childcare provider\, you will walk away from this session ready to become an expert at an individual child’s interests and abilities! \n\nAbout the Presenter \nDr. Laura Wilhelm is an associate professor at Oklahoma City University. She earned her Doctorate of Education at Oklahoma State University. Dr. Wilhelm has taught Pre-K through third grade and directed a child development laboratory school for children from six months through kindergarten. She is the author of Treasure Basket Explorations: Heuristic Learning for Infants and Toddlers and the co-author of The Neglected Child: How to Recognize\, Respond\, and Prevent. These students may not be able to focus\, listen\, control impulses\, self-motivate\, or self-regulate\, which naturally prevents them from learning and performing to their full potential. However\, students become totally engaged when they are learning about their favorite subject—themselves. And one of the greatest benefits of integrating social-emotional learning (SEL) with ELA and social studies is that it is student-centered. \nIn this edWebinar\, Jonathan Erwin\, M.A.\, provides a research-based rationale for teaching SEL\, shares lessons that teach specific SEL skills\, and shows how you can use SEL content to satisfy state standards. Leverage Erwin’s 30-plus years in education to learn how SEL can be an excellent vehicle for satisfying the requirements of your state’s ELA standards in addition to improving students’ attitudes and behaviors. This webinar will benefit ELA and social studies teachers grades 3-12\, counselors\, social workers\, and youth empowerment leaders. \nAbout the Presenter \nJonathan C. A knowledge of rich vocabulary words supports students’ ability to comprehend when reading\, while in turn\, reading comprehension reinforces their attention to language as they deepen their understanding of new texts. \nIn other words\, creating a classroom full of literacy heroes requires instruction that combines robust vocabulary with lessons in comprehension. Watch celebrated authors and distinguished vocabulary experts Dr. Isabel Beck and Dr. Margaret McKeown as they detail this important relationship between vocabulary and comprehension and the effect each has on literacy achievement\, including: \n\nWhat effective vocabulary instruction looks like\nWhat “Tier 2” words are and why they have a higher impact on both vocabulary and comprehension\nWhat the “lexical bar” is and how you can help all students cross it\nThe key differences between “questions” and “queries”\nHow to move students from surface understanding of a text (the “gist”) to a deeper understanding of what they’ve read (the “grist”)\nAnd much more!\n\nK-5 classroom teachers\, reading specialists\, literacy coaches\, administrators\, and librarians as well as K-12 district-level elementary curriculum and instruction directors/coordinators\, elementary reading directors/coordinators\, and elementary remedial reading directors/coordinators are invited to watch this recorded session. \n  \n \nAbout the Presenters \nDr. Isabel Beck and Dr. Margaret McKeown are long-time colleagues at the University of Pittsburgh. SUMMARY:Why the ABC’s Aren’t as Easy as 1-2-3 for Preschoolers
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Laura L. Bailet\, Ph.D.\, Nemours Children’s Health System\nSponsored by Kaplan Early Learning \nWATCH THE WEBINAR RECORDING\nIf you attended the live session\, you’ll be emailed a CE certificate within 24 hours of the webinar. If you view the recording and would like a CE certificate\, join the Classroom Management for Early Learning community and go to the Webinar Archives folder to take the CE quiz. \nFor preschoolers\, learning the ABC’s requires a new way of thinking. They need to learn how to process letters and letter sounds differently and very carefully. Sometimes we use an uppercase letter\, and sometimes a lowercase letter. Letter orientation is critical too. If we flip a “b” one way\, it becomes “d”; if we flip it another way\, it becomes “p” or “q.” This isn’t true for objects that young children play with. Many letters have more than one sound\, further complicating the learning process. \nIn this webinar\, Dr. Laura L. Bailet explores the key reasons that learning the ABC’s can be challenging both for children AND their teachers. Learn how to: \n• Review the ABC challenges\n• Describe developmentally-appropriate strategies to increase ABC knowledge\n• Become familiar with the key benchmarks for this important milestone \nLearn current best practices for enhancing alphabet knowledge in young children and gain new ideas and strategies for your classroom. This webinar is designed for preschool and kindergarten educators\, administrators\, and librarians as well as ESE professionals. \n\nAbout the Presenter \nLaura L. Bailet\, Ph.D.\, is a licensed school psychologist and an assistant professor at the College of Medicine at the Mayo Clinic. She has expertise on a wide range of learning problems\, including dyslexia and autism. Dr. Bailet established and directed the Neurocognitive Assessment Program within the Division of Neurology at Nemours Children’s Clinic\, Jacksonville\, FL for 18 years before creating the Nemours BrightStart! initiative. This innovative program promotes reading success and prevents reading failure by combining the fields of neuroscience\, population health\, child development\, and education\, to create powerful tools that level the playing field for all budding readers. Dr. Bailet has conducted research and published numerous journal articles and book chapters.
