SUMMARY:Character Education: Interview with Medal of Honor Recipient Sammy Davis (Vietnam)
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation\nSponsored by the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation \nWatch the Recording\nListen to the Podcast \nIf you attended the live session\, you’ll be emailed a CE certificate within 24 hours of the edWebinar. If you view the recording and would like a CE certificate\, join The Medal of Honor Character Development Program community and go to the edWebinar Archives folder to take the CE quiz. \nPlan for your class to tune in for the on-demand recording with Medal of Honor Recipient Sammy Davis. Sgt. Davis (then Pfc.) distinguished himself while serving at a remote fire support base when the base came under heavy mortar attack together with a fierce ground assault. Students will learn about his extraordinary actions\, the values that made his selfless service possible\, and the advice he has for how young people can impact the lives of others in a positive way. \nThis edWebinar\, presented by the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation\, is an inspiring learning opportunity for middle and high school students to connect directly with an American hero. Interviews with Medal of Honor Recipients are part of the Medal of Honor Character Development Program\, a free program that helps students build character and promotes responsible citizenship through a deeper understanding of stories of courage and sacrifice. Before the edWebinar\, we encourage teachers to review Davis’ story with their class. \nMedal of Honor Recipient Sammy Davis Citation \nFor conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty. Sgt. Davis (then Pfc.) distinguished himself during the early morning hours while serving as a cannoneer with Battery C\, at a remote fire support base. At approximately 0200 hours the fire support base was under heavy enemy mortar attack. Simultaneously\, an estimated reinforced Viet Cong battalion launched a fierce ground assault upon the fire support base. The attacking enemy drove to within 25 meters of the friendly positions. Only a river separated the Viet Cong from the fire support base. Detecting a nearby enemy position\, Sgt. Davis seized a machine gun and provided covering fire for his gun crew\, as they attempted to bring direct artillery fire on the enemy. Despite his efforts\, an enemy recoilless-rifle round scored a direct hit upon the artillery piece. The resultant blast hurled the gun crew from their weapon and blew Sgt. Davis into a foxhole. He struggled to his feet and returned to the howitzer\, which was burning furiously. Ignoring repeated warnings to seek cover\, Sgt. Davis rammed a shell into the gun. Disregarding a withering hail of enemy fire directed against his position\, he aimed and fired the howitzer which rolled backward\, knocking Sgt. Davis violently to the ground. Undaunted\, he returned to the weapon to fire again when an enemy mortar round exploded within 20 meters of his position\, injuring him painfully. Nevertheless\, Sgt. Davis loaded the artillery piece\, aimed\, and fired. Again he was knocked down by the recoil. In complete disregard for his safety\, Sgt. Davis loaded and fired three more shells into the enemy. Disregarding his extensive injuries and his inability to swim\, Sgt. Davis picked up an air mattress and struck out across the deep river to rescue three wounded comrades on the far side. Upon reaching the three wounded men\, he stood upright and fired into the dense vegetation to prevent the Viet Cong from advancing. While the most seriously wounded soldier was helped across the river\, Sgt. Davis protected the two remaining casualties until he could pull them across the river to the fire support base. Though suffering from painful wounds\, he refused medical attention\, joining another howitzer crew which fired at the large Viet Cong force until it broke contact and fled. Sgt. Davis’ extraordinary heroism\, at the risk of his life\, is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the U.S. Army.\nHost and Interviewer \nJason Robbins earned his Bachelor’s degree in Social Science and his Master’s Degree in Educational Administration. SUMMARY:Growth Mindset—Not Just for Kids: Why Educators’ Mindsets Matter and What They Can Do
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Brian Smith\, PhD\, Senior Research Scientist\, Committee for Children (Creators of the Second Step Program); with Tammy Fisher\, MEd\, PhD Candidate\, School Counselor\, St. Thomas School in Medina\, WA\nSponsored by The Second Step Program \nWatch the Recording\nIf you attended the live session\, you’ll be emailed a CE certificate within 24 hours of the edWebinar. If you view the recording and would like a CE certificate\, join the Creating a Positive School Climate community and go to the edWebinar Archives folder to take the CE quiz. \nResearch on and interest in helping students develop growth mindsets has exploded in recent years\, and for good reason. Studies show that when students have a growth rather than a fixed mindset about their intelligence and ability to get better at schoolwork they are more academically motivated and resilient. But what about the mindsets of the adults that are in the classroom teaching students every day? \nIn this edWebinar\, Brian Smith\, PhD\, Senior Research Scientist for Committee for Children (creators of the Second Step program); and Tammy Fisher\, MEd\, PhD Candidate\, School Counselor for St. Thomas School in Medina\, WA\, address that missing piece of the growth mindset puzzle. Teachers’ mindsets matter—their mindsets about their students as well as their mindsets about themselves. Decades of research show that teachers’ attitudes and judgments have powerful effects on student learning. Dr. Smith and Tammy discuss the importance of teachers’ maintaining a growth mindset about their students\, and they also will provide tips and strategies for doing that. \nNeuroscience shows that adults’ brains can and do change and grow at all ages. During this live\, interactive event\, we also will discuss neuroscience research on adult brain malleability and the critical importance of adults in education adopting a growth mindset to support their own ongoing ability to improve as educators and support student success. There will be time to ask Dr. Smith and Tammy questions after their presentation. All K-12 administrators\, teachers\, counselors\, school psychologists\, and social workers are invited to join us as we explore the importance of educators’ mindsets. \n  \nAbout the Presenters \nBrian Smith\, PhD\, received his doctorate in social welfare from the University of Washington\, where he studied prevention science and focused his research on the development and evaluation of interventions to promote positive youth development and prevent youth problems. Before that he spent eight years working as a counselor and social worker in K–12 schools. Since 2005 he has been a research scientist at Committee for Children\, where he works on developing and evaluating the Second Step school-based social-emotional learning program. \n  \nAn educator for over 33 years\, Tammy Fisher\, MEd\, PhD Candidate\, has worked at all grade levels as teacher\, parent coach\, and school counselor. Most recently\, she served 16 years as the first counselor in two K-8 school where she designed curriculum and taught students daily\, coordinated a Golden Apple Award winning peer mediation program\, and was named Washington State School Counselor of the Year in 2014. Tammy trains schools across the country and speaks nationally and internationally to educators and parents on restorative justice tools\, supporting social\, cognitive challenges and specific relationship strategies which build capacity in students to manage\, challenge and thrive. \n  \nJoin the Creating a Positive School Climate community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming edWebinars\, view past edWebinars\, take a quiz to receive a CE certificate for a past edWebinar\, and access free resources. \nWatch the Recording\n The Second Step Social-Emotional Learning Program is the premier SEL curriculum in the US\, reaching over 10 million students each year. To address this issue\, many schools turn to schoolwide assemblies and slogan campaigns. Although these efforts can generate excitement and a burst of goodwill among students and staff\, they don’t necessarily make a lasting impact on your school culture. \nIn this edWebinar Christa M. Tinari\, educational consultant\, author\, and expert in social-emotional learning\, explores the everyday reasons why kindness efforts might fail. Drawing from the latest research on the impact of social-emotional learning on school climate\, Christa provides a compelling rationale for integrating SEL into kindness campaigns. She identifies key social-emotional skills\, such as emotional literacy\, empathy\, perspective taking\, and upstander skills\, that can help students (and staff) show kindness even when it’s hard to do. Viewers will leave with lesson ideas they can use immediately and throughout the school year to build a sustainable culture of kindness.\n\nAbout the Presenter \nChrista M. Tinari is a nationally recognized consultant\, speaker\, author\, and peacebuilder. She provides educational consulting\, including professional development for staff and program development\, implementation\, and evaluation\, to schools and organizations across the county. Formerly a New Jersey student assistance counselor and district-wide bullying prevention implementation coach\, Christa has worked with thousands of school leaders and students of all ages to reduce bullying\, promote social-emotional skills\, and create safe school climates. Christa is facilitator of the Peaceful Schools Institute teacher training program and creator of The Feel & Deal Activity Deck\, an emotional intelligence tool for kids used on six continents. She is coauthor of Create a Culture of Kindness in Middle School. Christa frequently presents at conferences such as AMLE\, Character.org\, and the International Bullying Prevention Association. SUMMARY:Adaptive Literacy Learning 101
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Lauren Kimlinger\, First Grade Teacher\, Technology and Math Instructional Leader\, Boise-Eliot Elementary School\, Portland\, OR\nSponsored by Voyager Sopris Learning® \nWe’re sorry but the recording for this edWebinar is no longer available. \nJoin the Adaptive Literacy Learning community for other programs on this topic. \nWhat do you need to know about adaptive learning? The use of differentiated instruction to individualize each student’s learning experience is increasingly common in today’s elementary classrooms\, but creating meaningful differentiation for a typical class of 25 students or more can be a challenge. Teachers have limited time to give students the personal attention they need\, which is where adaptive learning can help. Adaptive learning is technology that responds to a student’s interactions in real time by offering support automatically—supplementing the one-on-one instruction that a teacher can provide and accelerating a student’s abilities. \nWatch this edWebinar for an introduction to adaptive literacy learning from elementary educator at Boise-Eliot Elementary School in Portland\, OR Lauren Kimlinger. You will hear about: \n\nFindings from a recent nationwide survey that show instructional leaders overwhelmingly see the value of adaptive learning solutions to help individualize instruction\nHow an elementary teacher incorporates an adaptive ELA program in her classroom\n\nElementary teachers\, librarians\, administrators\, reading specialists\, literacy coaches\, and curriculum and instruction personnel are invited to watch this recorded event. Learn how adaptive literacy can help your students! \nAbout the Presenters \nLauren Kimlinger is a first grade teacher and technology and math instructional leader at Boise-Eliot Elementary School in Portland\, OR\, with a fierce passion for edtech. She has a Bachelor of Arts in sociology from Oberlin College and a Masters of Arts in teaching from Concordia University. During her seven years of teaching kindergarten\, Lauren became fascinated by the mind-boggling choices in the emerging edtech market. Through experimenting with new technologies\, observing students and their data\, and learning about blended learning\, Lauren has made her own practice very much about meeting students exactly where they are and giving them their next step. Utilizing all available methods: technology\, small groups\, one-on-one conferences\, alternative means of assessment and group project work and more\, Lauren intends every year to step out of students’ ways and allow them to meet their potential. \nJoin the Adaptive Literacy Learning community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming webinars\, view past webinars\, take a quiz to receive a CE certificate for a past webinar\, and access free resources. \nVoyager Sopris Learning is part of the Cambium Learning® Group\, a leading educational solutions and services company committed to helping all students reach their full potential. SUMMARY:Fractions as Numbers: Unifying Representations and Interpretations
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Drew Corley\, PhD\, Senior Learning Scientist for Amplify Education; with Lauren Whitley\, Curriculum Developer for Amplify Education\nSponsored by Amplify Fractions \nWatch the Recording\nIf you attended the live session\, you’ll be emailed a CE certificate within 24 hours of the webinar. If you view the recording and would like a CE certificate\, join the Adaptive Math Learning community and go to the edWebinar Archives folder to take the CE quiz. \nMultiple interpretations of fractions are introduced explicitly and implicitly throughout grades 3 to 6: part-whole\, measurement\, ratio\, quotient\, and operator. Accompanying those are several representations and models: discrete sets\, area\, length\, and number line. Perhaps underlying all of those is the notion that fractions are simply numbers. \nIn this edWebinar\, Amplify Education’s Drew Corley\, PhD\, and Lauren Whitley explore questions about student learning and teaching practices for fractions\, including: \n\nIs there only one representation suitable for each interpretation?\nAre some representations necessarily better for certain interpretations?\nDoes the order in which they are introduced matter?\nHow could prior knowledge both support and interfere with new concepts?\nWhat does all this mean for operations and procedural fluency?\n\nDr. Corley and Lauren present rich tasks that highlight the core mathematical concepts behind various interpretations of fractions and models to support them—transitioning from equipartitioning to area and length models to the number line\, and then to division and operator. They also explore misconceptions\, alternative strategies\, and moments for connecting ideas via student-led discourse. Ways in which individual student understanding can be leveraged across interpretations and representations to adapt and personalize instruction also are addressed. \nThis session is designed for educators\, administrators\, technology specialists\, and math coaches working with students in grades 3-5\, but educators working through middle school will benefit from the strategies that will be shared during this edWebinar. \nSpecial Invitation: All edWebinar participants are invited to try Amplify Fractions for free through the end of the year. Amplify Fractions is a digital math program where adaptive learning meets interactive storytelling to help students master and gain a deep understanding of fractions. Your free trial also allows you to set up your students to access the program. Sign up for your free trial now! Access runs through December 31\, 2017.
