SUMMARY:Introducing Restorative Teacher-Student Mediation
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Ondine Gross\, M.S.\, Ed.M.\, Educational Consultant and Public Speaker\nSponsored by Brookes Publishing \nWatch the Recording\nIf you attended the live session\, you’ll be emailed a CE certificate within 24 hours of the edWebinar. If you view the recording and would like a CE certificate\, join the Teaching All Students: Practical Strategies for Inclusive Classrooms community and go to the edWebinar Archives folder to take the CE quiz. \nStudent: My teacher hates me!\nTeacher: My student’s behavior changed and I don’t know why! \nWhile rocky roads and challenges are an inevitable part of any school\, unresolved conflicts can lead to high frustration and low motivation. Relationships matter\, and the most important relationships in schools are between teachers and students. Children learn best when they feel their teachers care about them. In busy school settings\, however\, teachers and students often lack the time\, place\, or opportunity to build a trusting relationship. When students misbehave\, traditional disciplinary actions remove them from the class and the root cause for the misbehavior is often not addressed. \nIn this edWebinar\, school psychologist Ondine Gross discusses how to facilitate restorative teacher-student mediation—an easy\, evidence-based intervention that reduces disciplinary actions and promotes wellness in a school community. She shares how restorative mediation brings the teacher and student together in a positive meeting to model social\, problem solving\, and communication skills. Ondine also will explore how mediation fosters mutual understanding and empathy. During this live\, interactive session\, Ondine introduces this model and explain how mediation can also be used to resolve student conflict. \nThis recorded session is designed for all K12 educators\, administrators\, and counselors. Discover how mediation restores respect\, so teachers can teach and students can learn. \nAbout the Presenter\nOndine Gross\, M.S.\, Ed.M.\, is a nationally certified school psychologist\, licensed therapist\, and author of Restore the Respect: How to Mediate School Conflicts and Keep Students Learning. For over 30 years\, she was a school psychologist in diverse California and Illinois public schools. The California Association of School Psychologists named her an “Outstanding School Psychologist.” Mid-career\, Ondine earned a master’s degree in educational policy\, organization\, and leadership from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign as well as school administrator certification. She also became a volunteer community mediator and in 2011\, piloted restorative school mediation at her diverse public high school. The results were positive and immediate\, and inspired Ondine to write her book and train others. Now an educational consultant and public speaker\, Ondine’s audiences appreciate her frankness\, credibility\, and “in-the-trenches” humor when showing how mediation fosters safe\, positive\, affirming school environments for our teachers and students. \nJoin the Teaching All Students: Practical Strategies for Inclusive Classrooms community to participate in online discussions with peers\, for invitations to upcoming edWebinars\, to view past edWebinar recordings\, to take a quiz and receive a CE certificate for a past edWebinar\, and for access to more resources. \nWatch the Recording\n  \nFounded in 1978\, Brookes is an independent\, highly respected educational publishing company with a strong focus on helping all people—with and without disabilities—reach their potential. While children ages three to eight demonstrate incredible capacity for learning and processing copious amounts of information\, the way they demonstrate this knowledge and the accompanying skills is contingent upon a variety of variables\, such as their attention span\, ability to plan and strategize\, self-regulation\, and motivation to perform in decontextualized contexts—e.g. standardized or timed tests—which occur outside of and apart from meaningful learning activities and authentic inquiry. \nIn this edWebinar\, Brian Mowry\, Ph.D.\, Manager of Curriculum and Instruction for Frog Street Press\, reviews a developmentally appropriate framework for assessing young children and present ways to accomplish this arduous task through manageable\, ongoing and authentic forms of documentation\, including parent interviews and collaboration\, work sampling\, anecdotal records\, digital artifacts\, and clinical one-on-one interviews with the child. There will be time to get your questions answered after Dr. Mowry’s presentation. Early childhood educators\, administrators\, and program evaluators will benefit from attending this edWebinar.\n \nAbout the Presenter \nDr. Brian Mowry serves as the manager of curriculum and instruction for Frog Street Press and is the lead author of Frog Street Preschool Math. Because the truth is\, most people are born with enough music aptitude to play in a symphony orchestra when they are adults\, if they choose. But first we must learn how to “speak music”—to take the musical instrument we all have\, ourselves\, developing that musical capacity from a very young age. The sounds we make\, our movements\, our rhythms—these are the building blocks of music and of early childhood learning. And that’s what Music Together is all about.

SUMMARY:Character Education: Interview with Medal of Honor Recipient Gary Littrell (Vietnam)
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation\nSponsored by the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation\nWatch the Recording \nIf you attended the live session\, you’ll be emailed a CE certificate within 24 hours of the edWebinar. If you view the recording and would like a CE certificate\, join The Medal of Honor Character Development Program community and go to the edWebinar Archives folder to take the CE quiz. \nPlan for your class to watch the on-demand recording with Medal of Honor Recipient Gary Littrell. Littrell earned the Medal of Honor while serving as an American advisor in Vietnam. Through his indomitable courage and complete disregard for his safety\, he averted excessive loss of life and injury to the members of the battalion. \nThis edWebinar\, presented by the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation\, is an inspiring learning opportunity for middle and high school students to connect directly with an American hero. Interviews with Medal of Honor Recipients are part of the Medal of Honor Character Development Program\, a free program that helps students build character and promotes responsible citizenship through a deeper understanding of stories of courage and sacrifice. We encourage teachers to review Littrell’s story with their class. \nMedal of Honor Recipient Gary Littrell Citation\n \nFor conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty. Sfc. Littrell\, U.S. Military Assistance Command\, Vietnam\, Advisory Team 21\, distinguished himself while serving as a Light Weapons Infantry adviser with the 23d Battalion\, 2d Ranger Group\, Republic of Vietnam Army\, near Dak Seang. After establishing a defensive perimeter on a hill on 4 April\, the battalion was subjected to an intense enemy mortar attack which killed the Vietnamese commander\, one adviser\, and seriously wounded all the advisers except Sfc. Littrell. During the ensuing four days\, Sfc. Littrell exhibited near superhuman endurance as he singlehandedly bolstered the besieged battalion. Repeatedly abandoning positions of relative safety\, he directed artillery and air support by day and marked the unit’s location by night\, despite the heavy\, concentrated enemy fire. His dauntless will instilled in the men of the 23d Battalion a deep desire to resist. Assault after assault was repulsed as the battalion responded to the extraordinary leadership and personal example exhibited by Sfc. Littrell as he continuously moved to those points most seriously threatened by the enemy\, redistributed ammunition\, strengthened faltering defenses\, cared for the wounded\, and shouted encouragement to the Vietnamese in their own language. When the beleaguered battalion was finally ordered to withdraw\, numerous ambushes were encountered. Sfc. Littrell repeatedly prevented widespread disorder by directing air strikes to within 50 meters of their position. Through his indomitable courage and complete disregard for his safety\, he averted excessive loss of life and injury to the members of the battalion. The sustained extraordinary courage and selflessness displayed by Sfc. Littrell over an extended period of time were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit on him and the U.S. Army. \n  \nHost and Interviewer \nJason Robbins earned his Bachelor’s degree in Social Science and his Master’s Degree in Educational Administration. He taught Middle School History for ten years and currently teaches 12th grade Government and Economics at Steele Canyon High School in San Diego\, CA. \n  \n  \nJoin The Medal of Honor Character Development Program community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming edWebinars\, view past edWebinars\, take a quiz to receive a CE certificate for a past edWebinar\, and access free resources.\nWatch the Recording \nThe Medal of Honor Character Development Program is a free resource that teaches character through stories of the Medal of Honor recipients. The CDP is a cross-curriculum supplement and complies with National/State Common Core standards. The Medal of Honor Character Development Program incorporates the ideals of courage and selfless service into the middle and high school curriculum to build character and promote responsible citizenship.  The program is FREE and includes 50+ lesson plans supported by over 100 video vignettes of the Medal of Honor Recipients themselves\, as well as videos of hometown heroes selected by the Medal of Honor Recipients as “Citizen Heroes.”

SUMMARY:Measuring Edtech Impact in the ESSA Era
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Denis Newman\, CEO\, Empirical Education Inc. and Andrew Coulson\, Chief Strategist\, MIND Research Institute\nModerated by Bridget Foster\, Senior VP and Managing Director\, SIIA\nCo-hosted by edWeb.net and MCH Strategic Data \nWatch the Recording\nIf you attended the live session\, you’ll be emailed a CE certificate within 24 hours of the edWebinar. If you view the recording and would like a CE certificate\, join the Education Marketing Focus community and go to the edWebinar Archives folder to take the CE quiz. \nThis edWebinar introduces you to the new approach to evidence about which edtech products really work in K-12 schools. ESSA has changed the game when it comes to what counts as evidence. This session builds on the Education Technology Industry Network’s (ETIN) recent publication of Guidelines for EdTech Impact Research that explains the new ground rules. \nThe presentation explores how we can improve the conversation between edtech developers and vendors (providers)\, and the school district decision-makers who are buying and/or piloting the products (buyers).  ESSA has provided a more user-friendly definition of evidence\, which facilitates the conversation.   \n\nMany buyers are asking providers if there’s reason to think their product is likely to work in a district like theirs.\nFor providers\, the new ESSA rules let them start with simple studies to show their product shows promise without having to invest in expensive trials to prove it will work everywhere.\n\nThe presentation brings together two experts: Andrew Coulson\, a developer who has conducted research on their products and is concerned with improving the efficacy of edtech\, and Denis Newman\, a researcher who is the lead author of the ETIN Guidelines. The presentation will be moderated by Bridget Foster\, a long-time educator who now directs the ETIN at SIIA. This recorded edWebinar will be of interest to edtech developers\, school and district administrators\, education policy makers\, association leaders\, and any educator interested in the evidence of efficacy in edtech. \nAbout the Presenters \nDenis Newman\, lead author of ETIN’s guidelines for research on edtech impact\, is the CEO of Empirical Education Inc.\, a research organization that conducts dozens of RCTs and other evaluations of school programs. He has 35 years of experience improving student-teacher learning processes and instructional technologies and is a pioneer in applying internet to student learning\, professional development\, and school administration. His Ph.D. in developmental psychology is from The City University of New York. \nAndrew Coulson\, Chief Data Science Officer\, oversees the development of expansion strategies\, product-to-market operations and leads a team of data analysts to conduct evaluation of MIND’s activities. Prior to this position\, he led MIND’s Education Division for 12 years\, helping to devise and execute strategies and programs to scale the organization’s reach to now support student learning in 45 states across the country. Before joining MIND\, Coulson was a program officer for a major Orange County foundation\, specializing in education. He also worked for 17 years in upper management as a STEM professional in high-tech manufacturing engineering\, acquiring experience in operations\, process engineering\, reliability and technology transfer. \n About the Moderator \nBridget Foster has worked in all areas of the education market—from classroom teacher\, to state level and industry leadership. As EVP & Managing Director of ETIN\, she helps companies better understand the education market\, so that they can grow their brands worldwide. She holds credentials in English\, science\, mathematics and school administration. \n  \nJoin the Education Marketing Focus to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming edWebinars\, view past edWebinars\, and access free resources. \nWatch the Recording

School districts are under intense pressure to meet the learning needs of their students\, the professional development needs of their staff\, and an accelerating pace of change—with limited financial resources. \nAt the same time\, superintendents are grappling with how they will balance their districts’ budgets with the ongoing increase of medical premiums and the massive escalation of pension contributions from both the employer and the employees. There is a sense of urgency to examine cost reduction and cost optimization strategies to offset the medical and pension increases. \nThese looming fiscal challenges make it even more important for school districts to reduce costs and optimize the use of technology and currently available resources. Districts will need to determine how to automate processes and enhance operational efficiency through innovative solutions to offset the rising cost and repurpose the savings toward mission critical projects such as the integration of technology solutions. \nIn this edWebinar\, watch a provocative discussion of these issues with Dr. Gabe Soumakian\, Dr. Rick Miller\, and Larry Cocco\, as they bring their years of expertise in these areas to an exploration of ways school districts can rise to the challenge.
