SUMMARY:View Beneath Their Feet: Thinking Critically About Classroom Rugs
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dr. Sandra Duncan\, Classroom Design Expert\nSponsored by Kaplan Early Learning \nWatch the Recording\nIf you view the recording and would like a CE certificate\, join the Classroom Management for Early Learning community and go to the CE Quizzes link in the Community Toolbox. \nThere are times when it is important to watch the view beneath your feet such as when walking on a muddy trail\, rocky pathway\, uneven sidewalk\, or bumpy walkway. We are careful when traversing down steep stairs\, climbing up and down a tall step ladder\, or getting in and out of a wobbly canoe. When unfamiliar with the landscape or unsure of our footing\, we watch our step because we don’t want to trip\, stumble\, or—worst case scenario—fall. What’s below our feet tells us how to act and move. An uneven walking surface sends a message to slow down and mind our step\, or\, when coming down a steep hill\, our brains send a message to our bodies to walk with care and our eyes help us to find the best way down. The view beneath our feet informs us how to navigate and move about the space. Likewise\, the view beneath children’s feet sends important messages about how to move about the classroom environment. \nWatch Classroom Design Expert Dr. Sandra Duncan in this edWebinar to learn how area rugs play a critical role in defining spaces and helping children navigate the classroom. Viewers will become knowledgeable about the purpose of rugs\, their selection\, and how to position them in the classroom. They will understand how to determine the appropriate size\, shape\, type\, and design of the rugs for your classroom. PreK educators will benefit from attending this session. Viewers will walk away from this recorded presentation with a new appreciation and perspective about rugs as an important element of classroom design. \nAbout the Presenter \nWith almost 50 years of experience in the early care and education field\, Dr. Sandra Duncan has extensive experiences in publishing curricula and teacher resources\, playing with young children\, training early childhood professionals\, teaching at the university level\, designing professional development programs\, working with parents and CDA candidates\, and authoring several books such as Inspiring Spaces for Young Children; Rating Observation Scale for Inspiring Spaces (ROSIE); Rethinking the Classroom Landscape: Creating Environments that Connect Young Children\, Families\, and Communities; Bringing the Outside In: Ideas for Creating Nature-Based Classroom Experiences for Young Children; and Through a Child’s Eyes: How Classroom Design Affects Behavior and Learning (TBP in November 2018) as well as numerous articles on early childhood environments and connecting children with nature. \nJoin the Classroom Management for Early Learning community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming edWebinars\, view past edWebinars\, take a quiz to receive a CE certificate for a past edWebinar\, and access free resources. \n Kaplan Early Learning Company is a leading international provider of products and services that enhance children’s learning.

SUMMARY:Digital Pedagogical Documentation: Why\, What and How
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Ron Spreeuwenberg\, Co-founder & CEO\, HiMama\nSponsored by HiMama \nWatch the Recording\nIf you view the recording and would like a CE certificate\, join the PreK-3 Digital Learning community and go to the CE Quizzes link in the Community Toolbox. \nPedagogical documentation is the process of recording events in the life of a child as a vehicle for learning that bridges our understanding of children. When executed correctly\, pedagogical documentation makes for an engaging learning process for both children and teachers\, however\, the challenge of implementing the theory of pedagogical documentation in a practical setting is a real hurdle to overcome. This is where digital tools come into play. \nIn this edWebinar\, Ron Spreeuwenberg\, Co-founder and CEO of HiMama\, discusses how digital tools are an enabler for busy teachers that are wearing so many hats to both get the documentation done that they need to get done\, as well as to live the experience of recording observations together with a child. Digital applications can also be a huge timesaver when it comes to the things that teachers usually do over their lunch break\, evenings and weekends\, by automatically storing observations in portfolios and learning stories for future reflection. \nPreK administrators and educators will benefit from watching this recorded session. Learn about using digital tools to implement pedagogical documentation. \nAbout the Presenter\nRon Spreeuwenberg\, Co-founder and CEO of HiMama is the host of a leading podcast series\, The Preschool Podcast. The expected growth of EL students necessitates effective strategies to meet their unique needs. This population of students faces a myriad of obstacles not only to gain English proficiency\, but also to excel academically. In addition\, schools must recognize the obstacles that exist for EL students beyond the school setting\, such as family economic status\, insecurity about immigrant status\, and high mobility rates due to economic conditions. All of these factors shape the student seated in the classroom. \nWhat can educators and school districts do to ensure that EL students are receiving the best possible opportunities to succeed? In this edWebinar\, Dr. Karen Henery\, Director of ESOL at Little Rock School District in Arkansas\, shares how to implement effective and equitable systems to improve the lives and academic outcomes of EL students. \nIn this recorded session\, learn more about how to: \n\nPrioritize the growing body of students struggling to achieve academic progress because of mounting barriers to English language acquisition\nImplement classroom strategies that improve language acquisition for this population\nEquip students and teachers with resources and tactics that are proven to increase language proficiency\nAccelerate language learning for students and empower teachers to further individualize instruction\n\nEducators who understand the strategies that can help ELs from falling behind can identify the challenges that limit language proficiency and foster a welcoming environment for language development. SUMMARY:Character Education: Interview with Medal of Honor Recipient Gordon R. Roberts (Vietnam)
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation\nSponsored by the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation \nWatch the Recording\nListen to the Podcast \nIf you view the recording and would like a CE certificate\, join the The Medal of Honor Character Development Program community and go to the edWebinar Archives folder to take the CE quiz. \nPlan for your class to watch the on-demand recording with Medal of Honor Recipient Gordon R. Roberts. Sgt. Roberts distinguished himself while serving as a rifleman in Vietnam. Roberts’ platoon was maneuvering along a ridge to attack enemy bunkers which had pinned down an adjoining friendly company. As they approached\, they were attacked by heavy automatic weapons and grenade fire. Seeing his platoon immobilized\, Sgt. Roberts crawled rapidly toward the closest enemy bunker and charged it\, fighting through a heavy hail of fire to join the friendly company. Although continually exposed to hostile fire\, Sgt. Roberts assisted in moving wounded personnel from exposed positions to an evacuation area before returning to his unit. \nThis edWebinar\, presented by the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation\, is an inspiring learning opportunity for middle and high school students to connect directly with an American hero. Interviews with Medal of Honor Recipients are part of the Medal of Honor Character Development Program\, a free program that helps students build character and promotes responsible citizenship through a deeper understanding of stories of courage and sacrifice. Before watching the recorded edWebinar\, we encourage teachers to review Roberts’ story with their class. \nMedal of Honor Recipient Gordon R. Roberts Citation\n\nFor conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty. Sgt. Roberts distinguished himself while serving as a rifleman in Company B\, during combat operations. Sgt. Roberts’ platoon was maneuvering along a ridge to attack heavily fortified enemy bunker positions which had pinned down an adjoining friendly company. As the platoon approached the enemy positions\, it was suddenly pinned down by heavy automatic weapons and grenade fire from camouflaged enemy fortifications atop the overlooking hill. Seeing his platoon immobilized and in danger of failing in its mission\, Sgt. Roberts crawled rapidly toward the closest enemy bunker. \nWith complete disregard for his safety\, he leaped to his feet and charged the bunker\, firing as he ran. Despite the intense enemy fire directed at him\, Sgt. Roberts silenced the 2-man bunker. Without hesitation\, Sgt. Roberts continued his l-man assault on a second bunker. As he neared the second bunker\, a burst of enemy fire knocked his rifle from his hands. Sgt. Roberts picked up a rifle dropped by a comrade and continued his assault\, silencing the bunker. He continued his charge against a third bunker and destroyed it with well-thrown hand grenades. \nAlthough Sgt. Roberts was now cut off from his platoon\, he continued his assault against a fourth enemy emplacement. He fought through a heavy hail of fire to join elements of the adjoining company which had been pinned down by the enemy fire. Although continually exposed to hostile fire\, he assisted in moving wounded personnel from exposed positions on the hilltop to an evacuation area before returning to his unit. By his gallant and selfless actions\, Sgt. Roberts contributed directly to saving the lives of his comrades and served as an inspiration to his fellow soldiers in the defeat of the enemy force. Sgt. Roberts’ extraordinary heroism in action at the risk of his life were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself\, his unit\, and the U.S. Army. \nHost and Interviewer \nCathy Ehlers Metcalf joined the Medal of Honor Character Development Program as Vice President of Education in 2015 after serving as a Regional Curriculum Trainer. Cathy taught college-level writing for over 33 years in Southern California. Cathy’s father was a World War II Medal of Honor Recipient. Those experiences gave Cathy a great respect for both the Medal of Honor and a passion for service to our Nation’s Veterans. \n  \n  \nJoin The Medal of Honor Character Development Program community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming edWebinars\, view past edWebinars\, take a quiz to receive a CE certificate for a past edWebinar\, and access free resources. \n  \nThe Medal of Honor Character Development Program is a free resource that teaches character through stories of the Medal of Honor recipients. SUMMARY:Fraction Challenges for Your Classroom and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Zachary Wissner-Gross\, PhD\, Product Manager\, Amplify Education\nSponsored by Amplify Fractions \nWatch the Recording\nIf you attend the live session\, you’ll be emailed a CE certificate within 24 hours of the webinar. If you view the recording and would like a CE certificate\, join the Adaptive Math Learning community and go to the edWebinar Archives folder to take the CE quiz. \nWhile standards relating to fractions typically conclude by fifth or sixth grade\, fractions themselves continue to show up everywhere in more advanced mathematics. In this edWebinar\, Zachary Wissner-Gross\, PhD\, Product Manager at Amplify Education\, will explore a variety of more advanced fractions-related concepts that make for great lessons in middle school\, high school\, or beyond. \nWe’ll begin by thinking through some alternatives to fractions. After all\, fractions are really just a convention we’ve settled on for writing and thinking about rational numbers—there’s more than one way to describe values between whole numbers. (It will become apparent why some of these ways aren’t as popular as fractions!) \nFrom there\, we’ll visualize fractional operations from addition through exponentiation\, prove that certain numbers are irrational\, sum geometric series of fractions\, and explore the dimensionality of fractals. You are guaranteed to see fractions in at least one new and exciting way to bring back to your classroom. \nThis session will benefit middle school math teachers as well as upper elementary educators looking for a fractions challenge. There will be time to get your questions answered after the presentation. \nSpecial Invitation: All edWebinar participants are invited to try Amplify Fractions for free through June 30\, 2018. Amplify Fractions is a digital math program laser-focused on helping students deeply understand fractions. Your free trial also allows you to set up your students to access the program. SUMMARY:Bringing Hands-On Coding and STEAM into Your District or Classroom
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dr. Azadeh Jamalian\, Adjunct Assistant Professor at Teachers College\, Columbia University\, Head of Education Strategy at littleBits\nSponsored by littleBits Education \nWatch the Recording\n If you view the recording and would like a CE certificate\, join the STEM Learning community and go to the CE Quizzes link in the Community Toolbox. \nAccording to US Department of Labor\, more than 65% of today’s students will grow up having careers that do not exist yet. Traditional models of direct instruction were designed to teach a particular skill\, transferred top to bottom from teacher to student. Today\, the role of education has changed. Instead of preparing for specific careers\, it is vital to focus on making sure students are future ready. To do so\, many schools and districts are now integrating STEM and coding into their programs. But\, two key questions remain for many educators: “where to start?” and “how to bring STEM and coding into the curriculum without taking away time from other core subjects?” \nIn this edWebinar\, Dr. Azadeh Jamalian\, Head of Education Strategy at littleBits\, discusses best practices for bringing hands-on coding and STEAM into your school and review guidelines on coding to learn math\, science\, literacy\, art\, and music. Pilot and case studies examining STEM implementation in elementary and middle schools are reviewed\, and important takeaways applicable for different educational settings will be highlighted. \nTech and curriculum directors\, principals\, librarians\, and teachers for grades three to eight will benefit from watching this recorded session. Viewers will take away actionable strategies for making your STEM and coding programs meaningful and effective. \nAbout the Presenter\nAzadeh (Azi) Jamalian\, PhD is the head of education strategy at littleBits\, an award-winning platform of easy-to-use electronic building blocks that is empowering kids everywhere to create inventions\, large and small.
