SUMMARY:What Makes Effective Coaching Programs: Lessons Learned from the Dynamic Learning Project
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Mahsa Bakhshaei\, Ph.D.\, Lead Research Scientist\, Digital Promise; Angela Hardy\, Research Analyst\, Digital Promise; and Teresa Engler\, Dynamic Learning Project K-12 District Technology and Instructional Coach\, McGuffey School District\nHosted by Barbara Pape\, Policy and Communications Director\, Learner Variability Project\, Digital Promise \nSponsored by Digital Promise \nWatch the Recording\nGet a CE Certificate for this edWebinar Learn more \nOver the past decade\, instructional coaching has increasingly attracted the interest of researchers and practitioners alike. The years between 2000 and 2015 saw the number of instructional coaches in U.S. schools double (Galey\, 2016). We also know from empirical research that coaching is more effective than traditional PD workshop models in creating meaningful change in teacher practice and student achievement (Kraft\, Blazer & Hogan\, 2018). However\, few empirical studies examine conditions that define the effectiveness of coaching programs in ways that support student engagement and learning. \nIn this edWebinar\, practitioners and researchers discuss the attributes of an effective instructional coaching program. They use evidence from two pilot years of an instructional technology coaching program in 108 schools nationwide. The findings suggest that a successful instructional coaching program is a sustained\, job-embedded PD\, structured around a partnership between administrators\, teachers\, and coaches. In a successful program\, teachers participate voluntarily to collaborate with coaches who provide personalized support in a non-evaluative manner. \nIn this edWebinar\, we: \n\nReview research on the features of effective instructional coaching\nBetter understand the roles and approaches that school administrations\, coaches\, and teachers can take to create a powerful coaching partnership\nDiscover why teachers who participated voluntarily without fear of evaluation showed better outcomes\nHear examples from a coach practitioner\n\nThis recorded edWebinar will be of benefit to teachers\, librarians\, school and district leaders\, and instructional coaches of all grade levels. \n \nAbout the Presenters \nMahsa Bakhshaei\, Ph.D.\, currently serves as Lead Research Scientist for the Dynamic Learning Project at Digital Promise. SUMMARY:Make Every Read-Aloud Experience Intentional and Instructional
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Lester Laminack\, Author of The Ultimate Read-Aloud Resource \nSponsored by Scholastic Education \nWatch the Recording\nGet a CE Certificate for this edWebinar Learn more \nEstablishing a routine of read-aloud experiences provides exposure to the best available texts presented by the most fluent reading voice in the classroom community. Hearing a well-written text in the voice of someone who is both thoroughly familiar with the text and has deep respect for the writing is a rare experience. This routine exposes students to a variety of genres\, topics\, authors\, styles\, voices\, formats\, and opinions\, which allows them to sample each as they find new interests they may want to pursue independently. A routine read-aloud experience creates a cultural norm\, an expectation that some text will be “heard” each day at a given time. Further entice your students to delve into texts independently by creating a browsing collection of related texts to extend what you are reading aloud. Read aloud to them with no other intention than to inspire them to delve into print independently. \nThe benefits of read-alouds include: \n\nGenerating interest in reading to create a thirst for a reading life\, and consistent read-aloud experiences can be the best enticement there is.\nImmersing students in content-specific vocabulary paired with images that will help them build background information and schema for upcoming independent reading of denser texts.\nEncouraging students to ask meaningful questions and have robust and authentic conversations.\n\nThis recorded edWebinar will be of particular value to kindergarten through elementary school teachers\, librarians\, and school and district leaders. \n \nAbout the Presenter \nLester Laminack is a professor emeritus of birth-kindergarten\, elementary\, and middle grades education at Western Carolina University. He is a full-time writer and consultant working with schools throughout the U.S. Lester is an active member of the NCTE and served three years as co-editor of the NCTE journal Primary Voices and as editor of the Children’s Book Review Department of the NCTE journal Language Arts (2003-2006). He has received two awards for excellence in teaching at WCU: the Botner Superior Teaching Award and the Chancellor’s Distinguished Teaching Award. \n \nJoin the Be a Literacy Hero community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming edWebinars\, and view recordings of previous programs to earn CE certificates. \n\nAt Scholastic\, we believe that the development of robust literacy skills is at the very heart of empowering children to thrive in school and in life. That’s why we create literacy solutions that support the whole child—in the classroom\, at home\, and in the community. From transformative\, research-based literacy instruction\, to expert professional development\, and groundbreaking family & community engagement\, we are with you every step of the way on the path to literacy.

SUMMARY:Feedback at the Forefront: Rethinking Assessment in Writing Instruction
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dr. Troy Hicks\, Professor of English and Education\, Author\, and Consultant\, Central Michigan University; and Shaelynn Farnsworth\, Coach\, Consultant\, and Educator\, Web20Classroom \n Sponsored by Writable \nWatch the Recording\nGet a CE Certificate for this edWebinar Learn more \nResearch shows that better feedback drives better revision\, which is the key to writing growth\, and yet there is an often-misplaced desire to replace the kind of feedback that students really need with only a single\, teacher-generated grade. The elusive\, yet worthwhile\, goal for educators is to find more effective and efficient ways to offer feedback for students that is timely\, specific\, and goal-oriented\, while also being standards-based and calibrated. With a few small shifts in the ways we provide feedback — and think about assessment in general — teachers and school leaders can make a substantive difference in student learning. \nIn this edWebinar\, literacy experts and authors Dr. Troy Hicks and Shaelynn Farnsworth discuss ways to shift towards feedback-centered writing instruction\, all in an effort to save time on grading and encourage student writing growth. Learn specific strategies (and tech tools) for moving feedback to the forefront of instruction and assessment. By giving effective feedback\, implementing AI-based feedback\, and calibrating teacher feedback across a school or district\, we can help our students grow as writers. \nRethink the lens through which you guide and measure your writing program by seeing how other schools are growing successful student writers through Writable\, a comprehensive program for writing instruction and assessment. Together\, both examine data while also learning how to make that data actionable by folding it back into instruction and assessment in easy\, effective\, and personalized ways. \nThis recorded edWebinar will be of interest to kindergarten through higher education teachers\, librarians\, school and district leaders\, those working in curriculum and instruction\, TOSAs and coaches\, and technology directors. \n \nAbout the Presenters \nDr. Troy Hicks is Professor of English and Education at Central Michigan University (CMU). He directs both the Chippewa River Writing Project and the Master of Arts in Learning\, Design & Technology program. A former middle school teacher\, he collaborates with K–12 colleagues and explores how they implement newer literacies in their classrooms. In 2011\, he was honored with CMU’s Provost’s Award for junior faculty who demonstrate outstanding achievement in research and creative activity; in 2014\, he received the Conference on English Education’s Richard A. Meade Award for scholarship in English Education; and\, in 2018\, he received the Michigan Reading Association’s Teacher Educator Award. An ISTE Certified Educator\, Dr. Hicks has authored numerous books\, articles\, chapters\, blog posts\, and other resources broadly related to the teaching of literacy in our digital age. Follow him on Twitter: @hickstro \n \nShaelynn Farnsworth is a leader in the convergence between literacy and technology. As a high school teacher\, she redefined her English classroom as not only a place to learn about literature but also explore how technology is shaping the future of communications. She continues this exploration as a consultant focusing on technology\, literacy\, differentiation\, and systemic change. Shaelynn is a staff developer\, literacy coach\, and supports districts in the implementation of initiatives. She is an MIE Expert\, Google Certified Innovator\, Apple Teacher\, and has training in Project-Based Learning from the Buck Institute\, Visible Learning with Hattie\, Instructional Coaching\, and K-12 Literacy Best Practices. \n \nJoin the ELA Today community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming edWebinars\, and view recordings of previous programs to earn CE certificates. \n\nWritable is a guided writing program for grades 3-12 that helps teachers scaffold and motivate students to become purposeful\, proficient writers\, and helps schools assess and monitor writing growth. With 600+ assignments and prompts (or create your own)\, and district or state-level benchmark assessments\, Writable helps teachers save time on prep and grading while focusing their writing instruction.

SUMMARY:Supporting Young Children’s Brain Development Through Music
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dr. Lili M. Levinowitz\, Director of Research\, Music Together Worldwide\, and Professor Emeritus\, Rowan University\nHosted by Lisa Chouteau\, Senior Video Producer and Manager of Video Production\, Music Together Worldwide \nSponsored by Music Together \nWatch the Recording\nGet a CE Certificate for this edWebinar Learn more \nIn this edWebinar\, hear discussion the many ways in which music participation in early childhood naturally supports the brain development of infants\, toddlers\, and preschoolers. Research continues to emphasize how important the first five years of a child’s life are for their brain development. Developmentally appropriate music activities can be an enjoyable and easy way for educators to naturally support the development of important structural changes\, neurological processes\, and cognitive skills during this very active time of development. Viewers will not only learn about some of the recent research in this field\, but they’ll come away with a deeper understanding of music’s impact on the developing brain and gain some musical tools and interaction ideas they can use to support young children’s brain development – all while also supporting their music development! Viewers will be able to use the knowledge they gain in this edWebinar to more intentionally use music in their day-to-day work with children. \nThis recorded edWebinar will be of particular benefit to those who work with infants and toddlers. \n \nAbout the Presenter \nLili M. Levinowitz\, Ph.D. is Professor Emeritus of Music Education at Rowan University. She is the co-author of the early childhood music and movement program\, Music Together\, and Director of Research for Music Together Worldwide. Dr. Levinowitz is considered a national authority on early childhood music and is actively involved in teaching very young children as well as graduate students. Her articles appear frequently in professional journals and popular magazines. She received her M.M. and Ph.D. from Temple University and her B.M. from Westminster Choir College. \n \nAbout the Host \nLisa Chouteau is the Music in Early Learning edWebinar series host. She is the senior video producer and manager of video production at Music Together Worldwide and holds a B.S. in business administration\, training\, and development from The College of New Jersey. Because the truth is\, most people are born with enough music aptitude to play in a symphony orchestra when they are adults\, if they choose. But first we must learn how to “speak music”—to take the musical instrument we all have\, ourselves\, developing that musical capacity from a very young age. The sounds we make\, our movements\, our rhythms—these are the building blocks of music and of early childhood learning. And that’s what Music Together is all about.
