SUMMARY:From Engagement to Learning: Congressional Briefing on Closing the Gap Between Student Aspirations and Classroom Practices
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dr. Julie Evans\, CEO\, Project Tomorrow; Dr. Lu Settles Young\, Vice Chair\, Kentucky Board of Education\, Professor\, University of Kentucky College of Education\, Former Superintendent and Chief Academic Officer; and a panel of students \nWatch the RecordingListen to the PodcastRead the Article \nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nAccording to our nation’s students\, the value of using technology for learning is clear—when used effectively\, it helps them develop the skills they need for future success. Seventy-five percent of high school students report that their number one use of technology in school is taking online tests\, an operational classroom practice that neither engages students in learning nor helps them develop workplace skills. \nConversely\, less than one-third of students say they have regular access to interactive technologies such as virtual labs\, multimedia tools\, augmented reality\, coding resources\, and AI tools that foster critical thinking\, creativity\, and problem solving. Students report that their best use of digital resources for learning happens on their own time\, outside of school\, most often through their smartphones. Given this reality\, what do we need to know to increase the efficacy of classroom learning\, especially when using technology? \nEach year\, the Speak Up Research Initiative asks K-12 students\, parents\, and educators about the role of technology for learning in and out of school. The Congressional Briefing is an annual presentation of Speak Up results to national policymakers. In this year’s Speak Up Congressional Briefing\, Dr. Julie Evans\, CEO of Project Tomorrow\, shares the 2023-24 national research findings collected from over 100\,000 K-12 students\, classroom educators\, administrators\, and parents and families nationwide about technology use in schools\, student engagement\, parents’ concerns\, teacher needs\, and even AI policies. \nMost notably\, the Briefing includes a panel of middle and high school students from across the United States\, offering their authentic\, no-spin views on learning today\, and their recommendations for closing the gap between students’ aspirations for more effective classroom learning and current instructional practices. \nThe recorded Congressional Briefing is of interest to K-12 school leaders\, district leaders\, education technology leaders\, teachers\, librarians\, and policymakers. \n \n \nAbout the Presenters \nDr. Julie A. Her work includes helping education leaders embrace change and innovation in education\, and to recognize that the voices and views of their stakeholders\, most notably students\, are valuable leadership assets. \nPrior to joining Project Tomorrow in 1999\, Dr. Evans enjoyed a successful career in management within the technology industry including with two education technology startups. As a national thought leader and influencer\, she brings to discussions about the future of education a unique perspective because of her experiences working in both the for-profit and nonprofit sectors as well as within education. Dr. Evans is a graduate of Brown University and earned her doctorate in educational leadership from the University of California\, San Diego and California State University San Marcos. She is a frequent facilitator\, speaker\, and writer on new learning models within education\, most notably around digital learning. Among her many accolades and awards\, Dr. Evans was named in April 2020 as the winner of EdTech Digest’s National Leader award. SUMMARY:When the Science of Learning Meets the Science of Reading: A Multilingual Approach to Structured Literacy
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Zaretta Hammond\, Founder and CEO\, Transformative Learning Solutions; and Maya Goodall\, Chief Strategy Officer\, CORE Learning\nModerated by Kristie Shelley\, Chief Product Officer\, CORE Learning \nSponsored by CORE Learning \nWatch the RecordingListen to the Podcast \nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nThere’s a misconception that structured literacy doesn’t work for multilingual learners—and that’s true if you’re using a monolingual approach. But structured literacy is not one-size-fits-all\, and this edWebinar with Zaretta Hammond shows you how to break free from that limited perspective to provide multilingual learners with the evidence-based literacy instruction they deserve. \nZaretta connects the dots between the Science of Learning and the Science of Reading to explain how all new learning builds on what students already know. For multilingual learners\, this means using their heritage language as a foundation to strengthen English literacy skills. When applied through a multilingual lens\, structured literacy taps into students’ existing knowledge to drive deeper understanding. \nIn this first session of CORE Learning’s Structured Literacy and Language Diversity Week: Fall ‘24 Series\, you learn evidence-based instructional practices that honor and integrate the linguistic assets each student brings to the classroom. Structured literacy is effective for all learners—including multilingual learners—when it’s viewed as a flexible framework\, not a rigid set of rules. The key is adapting it to meet the diverse needs of your students\, ensuring every learner has the opportunity to succeed. \nThis recorded edWebinar is of interest to PreK-12 teachers\, school leaders\, and district leaders. \n\n \n \nAbout the Presenters \nZaretta Hammond\, M.A. is a national consultant and the author of Culturally Responsive Teaching and the Brain: Promoting Authentic Engagement and Rigor for Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Students (Corwin\, 2015). SUMMARY:Reading Comprehension Starts with Sounds: Using Phonology to Connect Home Languages and English
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Antonio A. Recognizing and building upon these connections is crucial to providing meaningful instruction. In this edWebinar with Dr. Antonio Fierro\, we explore how phonology—the study of speech sounds—strengthens structured literacy by tapping into these relationships. Through cross-linguistic transfer\, phonology helps students build on the strengths of their home languages\, enabling them to apply those skills to their English literacy development. \nDr. Fierro’s career focus on positionality—a well-known concept in cognitive science that explains how students juggle the cognitive demands of learning multiple languages—ties all of this work together. While widely recognized in research\, it hasn’t yet made its way into most classrooms. This session aims to change that. We show how positionality helps educators better recognize the connections between students’ languages and apply this understanding to structured literacy. \nIn this second session of CORE Learning’s Structured Literacy and Language Diversity Week: Fall ‘24 Series\, you gain practical\, evidence-based practices for using phonology and cross-linguistic transfer\, along with tools to advocate for policies that fully address the needs of multilingual learners. Leave equipped and empowered to ensure multilingual learners thrive within the Science of Reading framework. \nThis recorded edWebinar is of interest to PreK-12 teachers\, school leaders\, and district leaders. \n\n \n \nAbout the Presenters \nDr. Antonio A. Fierro is the Vice President of Professional Learning and Academics with the 95 Percent Group and co-author of Kid Lips\, a phonetics curriculum for young children. For almost 20 years\, Dr. Fierro was a member of the national LETRS cohort of literacy consultants led by Dr. Louisa Moas. He has also led many initiatives nationwide to improve instruction for English learners. SUMMARY:Honoring Black Language: A Path to Inclusive and Effective Structured Literacy
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dr. Jasmine Rogers\, Adjunct Professor\, School of Education\, American University; and Maya Goodall\, Chief Strategy Officer\, CORE Learning\nModerated by Kristie Shelley\, Chief Product Officer\, CORE Learning \nSponsored by CORE Learning \nWatch the RecordingListen to the Podcast \nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nToo often\, Black Language is treated as something to “correct” rather than recognized as a legitimate language system with its own rules\, grammar\, and structure. This mindset reflects deeply ingrained beliefs and attitudes that not only undermine students’ linguistic heritage but also limit the effectiveness of structured literacy by overlooking the linguistic strengths Black Language-speaking students bring to their learning. \nIn this third session of CORE Learning’s Structured Literacy and Language Diversity Week: Fall ‘24 Series\, Dr. Jasmine Rogers—a leading expert on Black Language and the Science of Reading—explains how even a few hours of instruction on Black English can help teachers recognize unconscious bias and enhance structured literacy instruction. Drawing from her classroom experience and research\, she challenges the outdated belief that Black English hinders academic success and demonstrates how affirming it as an asset enables students to build on their knowledge\, boosting literacy skills and confidence. \nBy viewing this edWebinar\, you gain evidence-based instructional practices that empower you to: \n\nReflect on and adjust your beliefs and attitudes toward Black Language\nSupport Black Language-speaking students by leveraging their linguistic strengths\nAddress unconscious bias to foster a more inclusive classroom environment\nMake your literacy instruction more reflective of students’ lived experiences\n\nLearn how even small shifts in your beliefs\, attitudes\, and literacy approach can lead to meaningful improvements. She has been featured as a guest on podcasts\, led workshops at teacher conferences\, and moderated academic panels. Her work not only helps educators recognize unconscious biases but also equips them to better serve linguistically diverse students. An experienced educator\, middle school assistant principal\, elementary principal and district administrator\, Carrie has supported student learning for over twenty-six years at the PreK-8 levels. In her district\, Carrie leads a variety of instructional teams\, to include: the district elementary literacy interventionists\, site coaches\, district coaches\, and district math interventionists and provides curriculum support to over 17 elementary schools in the areas of literacy\, math\, science\, and social studies. She was recognized for her Doctoral work and named the “Outstanding Doctorial Student.” Her dissertation on the Leadership and Managerial Needs of New Principals was selected for publication in Educational Leadership and she has led workshops on family engagement practices\, as well as weaving standards through interdisciplinary literacy at conventions in Wisconsin. \n \nUpon assuming her role as superintendent of the City Schools of Decatur on July 1\, 2023\, Dr. Gyimah Whitaker\, embarked on establishing a strong foundation to implement the district’s five-year strategic plan\, focusing on ensuring educational equity and success for all students. \nDr. Whitaker’s appointment was influenced by her successful tenure as Deputy Chief Academic Officer and Area Superintendent at Fulton County Schools (FCS). During her time at FCS\, she implemented a tiered autonomy system for school leaders\, which led to a significant decrease in failing schools from 16 to 2 in just three years. The two remaining schools were on the brink of being removed from state oversight before being disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. \nDr. Whitaker directed approximately one-third of FCS’s $262 million pandemic aid toward a structured literacy approach aimed at supporting the district’s academic recovery post-pandemic. The “Every Child Reads” initiative focused on training teachers and administrators in the science of reading methodology\, along with the addition of K-2 literacy coaches in all 60 elementary schools. This initiative aimed to provide all students an equal opportunity to maintain grade-level proficiency\, regardless of their socioeconomic background. The remarkable success of the initiative in FCS led to Dr. Whitaker being invited to testify before the Georgia House Education Committee\, which was considering the statewide adoption of “Every Child Reads.” Her testimony proved instrumental in the state’s legislation\, House Bill 538\, that session. \nPrior to her tenure at FCS\, at Atlanta Public Schools\, she served as Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning as well as Gifted Coordinator. Dr. Whitaker earned both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from The University of Pennsylvania and an Educational Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Georgia State University. She is the recipient of numerous awards\, and serves as a current and former board member for organizations that focus on our future\, the children. \n \nShanna Beber is the Executive Director of Literacy at the Louisiana Department of Education where she leads the literacy team in the development of the state’s comprehensive literacy strategy. Shanna has not only a deep passion for literacy but also for coaching teachers and leaders. This passion has led to the development of the Department’s literacy vision to have improved student literacy outcomes through high-quality instruction and interactions by an effective teacher supported by leaders and families. She prides herself on the progress Louisiana has made in such a short amount of time and is honored to lead the state’s literacy improvement work as they strive to provide every child with what they need to become a skilled reader. \n \nMarjorie Bottari is the Director of Content Development at Heggerty and an adjunct professor at DePaul University.
