SUMMARY:The Power of Interactions: New Evidence for SEL Impact on Literacy Learning
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Carol D. Lee\, Ph.D.\, Edwina S. Tarry Professor of Education in the School of Education and Social Policy and in African-American Studies\, Northwestern University; Bridget Hamre\, Ph.D.\, CEO and Co-Founder\, Teachstone; David Adams\, CEO\, Urban Assembly; and Marnetta Larrimer\, Client Success Manager\, Teachstone \nSponsored by Teachstone \nWatch the RecordingListen to the Podcast \nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nMany educators understand that social-emotional learning (SEL) and academic development are connected\, but we often think of teaching literacy and building relationships with students as separate responsibilities. Time-strapped teachers have a lot on their plates as it is—delivering reading lessons\, helping struggling students\, and managing challenging behaviors—and it’s not always easy to balance both students’ emotional well-being and their academic progress. School leaders also face questions about how to measure this connection and put it into practice. \nIn this edWebinar\, we examine new research from the Collaborative for Academic\, Social\, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) on how SEL supports literacy development\, along with Teachstone’s evidence of meaningful adult-child interactions in the classroom. Experts discuss how SEL can boost literacy skills in early childhood and elementary grades and share strategies that leaders can use to support educators’ positive impact on their students. \nThis session is designed for early childhood leaders\, instructional coaches\, district leaders\, and childcare directors who are looking for practical ways to apply new research to support SEL and literacy development. \n \n \nAbout the Presenters \nCarol D. Lee\, Ph.D. is the Edwina S. Tarry Professor Emerita of Education at Northwestern University and President of the National Academy of Education. SUMMARY:Strong Tier I Family Engagement to Ensure Student Outcomes: 5 Winter Strategies
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Kate Pechacek\, K12 Strategic Advisor\, TalkingPoints; and Heather Dooley\, Senior Director of Brand Marketing and Communications\, TalkingPoints \nSponsored by TalkingPoints \nWatch the Recording\nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nThis is the second in a three-part series about a groundbreaking approach that deploys family engagement as an effective intervention itself within a Multi-Tiered System of Supports rather than treating family engagement as a pillar within the framework. Family engagement is twice as likely to predict student success as a family’s socioeconomic status (Mapp & Henderson\, 2002). \nIn this edWebinar\, district leaders learn how to unlock significant student outcome gains by applying family engagement as a high-leverage strategy rather than a stand-alone initiative. The fall months are a key time to ensure strong Tier I universal family engagement supports are in place. With any student support\, you can not intervene your way out of insufficient Tier I. The same is true for family engagement as a student-outcomes-improving support. Effective family engagement is needed now more than ever to address the challenges schools are facing—teacher retention\, improved attendance\, and the well-being of students\, staff\, and families\, to name a few. \nJoin us to learn how to leverage a sometimes overlooked\, but extremely powerful\, student support by understanding strong Tier I family engagement. This recorded edWebinar is of particular interest to K-12 district leaders. \nView part one: Family Engagement Unlocks the Power of Your MTSS Framework: 5 Fall Strategies\nView part three: Strong Tier 2-3 Family Engagement to Ensure Student Outcomes: 5 Spring Strategies \n\n \n \nAbout the Presenters \nKate Pechacek currently serves as K12 Strategic Advisor to systems-improving edtech organizations and school districts\, including TalkingPoints\, and is the founder and CEO of OpendoorsEd. Prior to founding OpendoorsEd\, Kate served as Head of Impact at TalkingPoints\, one of several roles she has held in education technology over the last nine years. She began her nearly 30-year career in education as a secondary math teacher. In addition to 15 years as a teacher\, Kate has served in districts nationwide\, holding multiple site and district leadership roles in curriculum\, instruction\, assessment\, and MTSS. She is passionate about ensuring equity\, disrupting predictability\, and narrowing opportunity gaps. \n\n \nHeather Dooley serves as TalkingPoints’ Senior Director of Brand Marketing and Communications. SUMMARY:From Engagement to Learning: Congressional Briefing on Closing the Gap Between Student Aspirations and Classroom Practices
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dr. Julie Evans\, CEO\, Project Tomorrow; Dr. Lu Settles Young\, Vice Chair\, Kentucky Board of Education\, Professor\, University of Kentucky College of Education\, Former Superintendent and Chief Academic Officer; and a panel of students \nWatch the RecordingListen to the PodcastRead the Article \nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nAccording to our nation’s students\, the value of using technology for learning is clear—when used effectively\, it helps them develop the skills they need for future success. Seventy-five percent of high school students report that their number one use of technology in school is taking online tests\, an operational classroom practice that neither engages students in learning nor helps them develop workplace skills. \nConversely\, less than one-third of students say they have regular access to interactive technologies such as virtual labs\, multimedia tools\, augmented reality\, coding resources\, and AI tools that foster critical thinking\, creativity\, and problem solving. Students report that their best use of digital resources for learning happens on their own time\, outside of school\, most often through their smartphones. Given this reality\, what do we need to know to increase the efficacy of classroom learning\, especially when using technology? \nEach year\, the Speak Up Research Initiative asks K-12 students\, parents\, and educators about the role of technology for learning in and out of school. The Congressional Briefing is an annual presentation of Speak Up results to national policymakers. In this year’s Speak Up Congressional Briefing\, Dr. Julie Evans\, CEO of Project Tomorrow\, shares the 2023-24 national research findings collected from over 100\,000 K-12 students\, classroom educators\, administrators\, and parents and families nationwide about technology use in schools\, student engagement\, parents’ concerns\, teacher needs\, and even AI policies. \nMost notably\, the Briefing includes a panel of middle and high school students from across the United States\, offering their authentic\, no-spin views on learning today\, and their recommendations for closing the gap between students’ aspirations for more effective classroom learning and current instructional practices. \nThe recorded Congressional Briefing is of interest to K-12 school leaders\, district leaders\, education technology leaders\, teachers\, librarians\, and policymakers. \n \n \nAbout the Presenters \nDr. Julie A.
