SUMMARY:FILMS BYKIDS: Inspire Learning with Cinematic Journeys
DESCRIPTION:Using Student Films as Catalysts for Cross-Cultural Understanding and Critical Thinking \nPresented by Holly Carter\, BYkids founder and executive director; Sandy Goldberg\, Director of Education Programs at WNET; with Joe Troyen\, founder of PenPal Schools\nSponsored by WNET \nWATCH THE WEBINAR RECORDING\nTheir words. Their films. \nThis webinar was designed to give educators across the secondary curriculum insights into how documentary films by students can engage learners in the pursuit of global understanding\, explorations of globally relevant issues\, and ultimately serve as a catalyst for meaningful action. The presentation featured the new five-part series\, FILMS BYKIDS\, a partnership between THIRTEEN\, the flagship station of PBS\, and BYkids\, a nonprofit organization. This documentary series brings the voices of five young filmmakers from different cultures to a wider audience through the reach of public media. \nFILMS BYKIDS pairs master filmmakers\, including the late Albert Maysles (Grey Gardens\, Gimme Shelter)\, Neal Baer (Under the Dome\, Law and Order SVU) and Joyce Chopra (Smooth Talk) with teens around the world. The young filmmakers grew up grappling with the effects of exile\, illiteracy\, disease\, ware and bigotry. Student filmmakers included the 17-year-old exiled king of Tibet; a girl from rural India striving for an education; an orphan in Mozambique; a Colombian girl displaced by civil war; and a Yemeni immigrant in New York\, bullied because of her Islamic identity. \nHolly Carter\, BYkids founder and executive director\, and Sandy Goldberg\, Director of Education Programs at WNET\, explored: \n\nApproaches to fostering powerful classroom discussions\nHow to leverage messaging and context from documentary film\nStrategies for guiding student reflection and critical thinking about globally-relevant issues\nTechniques for using global pen pals to enrich and expand understanding from Joe Troyen\, founder of PenPal Schools\n\nEvery educator who attended the live webinar will receive a complimentary copy of the collection of resources that accompany this five-film series that began airing on public television stations on January 24th. Films will also be available for free streaming on the FILMS BYKIDS website. Educator resources are available on PBS LearningMedia and on PenPal Schools. The presenters will field questions from attendees after the presentation. This webinar is for all secondary educators\, especially those teaching social studies or journalism\, as well as school librarians. \nJoin the How Video Empowers Education community to participate in online discussions with peers\, for invitations to upcoming webinars\, to view past webinar recordings\, to take a quiz and receive a CE certificate for a past webinar\, and for access to more resources. \n  \nHolly Carter is the Founder and Executive Director of BYkids. Holly started her career as a journalist at The New York Times and has worked for 20 years as a journalist\, editor\, documentary filmmaker\, fundraiser and non-profit leader. Before founding BYkids\, Holly ran the Global Film Initiative\, a foundation bringing feature films from the developing world to major cultural institutions across the country in an effort to promote cross-cultural understanding. From 1999 to 2003\, she produced Media Matters\, a monthly PBS magazine show about journalism and concurrently worked as a consultant for The After-School Corporation\, a non-profit initiative founded by George Soros that brings quality after-school programs to New York City public schools. In 1999\, Carter co-founded North Carolina’s Full Frame Festival\, which has grown to become the largest documentary film festival in the world. Before that\, Carter co-produced the award-winning documentary\, Margaret Sanger. From 1985 through 1988\, Carter was a journalist and editor in the Business Section of The New York Times\, and from 1988 through 1990\, she served as a writer and editor on the Editorial Page of The Times\, for which she received numerous awards\, including a Publisher’s Award. \n  \nSandy Goldberg is Director of Education Programs at WNET\, where she is responsible for the strategic development\, planning\, implementation\, and management of educational initiatives to provide valuable resources to educators and extend the reach of WNET programming. In that capacity she conceptualizes and directs the design\, production\, and dissemination of standards-aligned digital classroom and professional development resources. SUMMARY:7 Best Practices and Pitfalls of Professional Development
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dr. Rena Hall\, Director of Training and Professional Development\, Frog Street Press\nSponsored by Frog Street Press \nWATCH THE WEBINAR RECORDING\nEvery teacher can probably describe a boring or downright ineffective professional-development (PD) experience they’ve encountered. In fact\, one out of three professional development experiences can be categorized as ineffective. There are many challenges when trying to design a successful and engaging professional development program for continuous teacher education. \nTeachers tackle new challenges each year from advances in technology\, new instructional methods\, change in subject content etc.\, and these challenges pose the question\, “What is the most effective professional development?” The objectives of professional development and effective continuous teacher education is to help teachers reflect on their competencies\, develop and enhance those competencies\, and to keep current on the theory and practice to improve teaching and learning in the classroom. Professional development activities may include workshops\, faculty and department meetings\, state/local conferences\, credit and non-credit college courses (classroom or online)\, professional learning communities\, peer observation/coaching\, or individual study. \nWhether an administrator looking for useful tips or an educator who wants to hone his/her own skills\, the research-based hints in this presentation will help teachers avoid some of the most common problems and mistakes made in professional development training programs. This webinar will bridge best practices with the core tenets of professional development\, alerting educators to the items to practice (peaks) and to avoid (pitfalls). Dr. Hall discussed these highly transformative resources\, strategies and practices. \nJoin the Early Childhood Learning Solutions community to participate in online discussions with peers\, for invitations to upcoming webinars\, to view past webinar recordings\, to take a quiz and receive a CE certificate for a past webinar\, and for access to more resources. \n  \nDr. Rena Hall has been a leader in the educational arena for the past twenty years; she has held many positions in higher education\, nonprofit management and within the federal government. SUMMARY:Expert Leadership: Interview with Medal of Honor Recipient Jay Vargas
DESCRIPTION:Sponsored by the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation \nWATCH THE WEBINAR RECORDING \nWatch with your students! \nMedal of Honor Recipient Jay Vargas told his personal story during this special webinar presented by the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation (CMOHF). This interview is an exciting learning opportunity for students. We encourage teachers and their classes\, 5th grade and up\, to watch  Mr. Vargas recount his experiences growing up as part of an immigrant family and share his thoughts on courage and commitment. \nOf his many accomplishments as a Marine Officer\, the most widely publicized was achieved in combat. In the spring of 1968\, while serving in the Republic of Vietnam\, Vargas’ company engaged in fierce combat with the enemy at the village of Dai Do. During the battle\, he was able to free one of his platoons\, pinned down by heavy fire\, by personally destroying three enemy machine gun positions. Vargas then carried to safety his seriously wounded battalion commander and saved seven other Marines. His actions left 15 of the enemy dead and caused him to sustain wounds at three different times. He refused to leave the field of battle until his injuries compelled him to do so. It was for his actions at Dai Do that\, in a May 1970 ceremony at the White House\, President Richard M. Vargas was born in Winslow\, Arizona\, the son of immigrants\, an Italian mother and Hispanic father\, who came to the United States in 1917. His family taught him that the price of success is hard work and the cost of freedom is personal sacrifice. All four Vargas sons wore the uniform of their country in time of war: brothers Angelo and Frank at Iwo Jima and Okinawa during World War II\, Joseph in Korea\, and Jay in Vietnam. Read his full citation here. \nBefore joining the Marines\, Jay Vargas attended Northern Arizona University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. He completed a Master of Arts in Education with honors at United States International University\, and earned a Doctoral Degree from Northern Arizona University. \nHe commanded and led Marines at every level\, from Rifle Platoon to an Infantry Regiment. His final tour of duty as a Marine Officer found him on the staff of the Commander\, U.S. Naval Forces\, Pacific\, where he served as Force Marine. Nixon presented then Major Vargas with our nation’s highest decoration for military valor\, the Congressional Medal of Honor. \nIn addition to the Medal of Honor\, Colonel Vargas’s personal decorations include the Silver Star; the Purple Heart with four Gold Stars; the Combat Action Ribbon; the Meritorious Service Medal; and the Vietnamese Gallantry Cross with Silver Star and Palm. \nColonel Vargas retired from the Marine Corps in 1993. He was then appointed Secretary of the California Department of Veterans Affairs\, a position he held from 1993-98. On 9 July\, 2001\, the President of the United States appointed Vargas Veterans’ Liaison for the US Department of Veterans’ Affairs\, as which he served until 21 January\, 2009. \nJay is the recipient of the VFW’s “Veteran of the Year Award”; AMVETS “Civil Servant-of-the-Year Award”; and the Jewish War Veterans\, USA “ Citizen of the Year Award” for his dedicated service in caring for veterans. He continues to serve as a spokesperson for Triwest Healthcare’s mental health campaign\, keeping a busy schedule of speaking to active duty military and veterans. \n  \n \n  \nCathy Ehlers-Metcalf joined the Medal of Honor Character Development Program as Vice President of Education in 2015. \n  \n  \n  \nWATCH THE WEBINAR RECORDING \n  \nThe Medal of Honor Character Development Program is a free resource that teaches character through stories of the Medal of Honor recipients.
