As a member of the community\, you’ll also have access to additional resources and online discussions.\nThis webinar provided information on Irlen Syndrome for educators and others who work with children. Irlen Syndrome is a perceptual processing disorder\, specifically related to how the brain processes visual information. It is estimated to exist in approximately 12% of the general population and in approximately 46% of the population with reading and other visual processing difficulties. Helen Irlen explained Irlen Syndrome and provided information on the following: \n\nCharacteristics of Irlen Syndrome\nHow to identify characteristics in children at school\nHow educators can create environments that may be more comfortable and increase performance\, attention\, and concentration\nStrategies and resources for educators\n\nFor approximately 6 hours every school day\, students are asked to sit under bright florescent lights and look at white paper\, usually a book or handouts\, or a whiteboard\, or an electronic device. For many students\, this causes an array of academic difficulties. Some of the symptoms of Irlen Syndrome include: \n\nBothered by bright/fluorescent lights\, glare\nSlow or inefficient reading\, poor comprehension\nDifficulty with math computation\, reading music\, or copying\nPrint may appear distorted or move on the page\nEye strain\, fatigue\, dizziness\, anxiety\, irritability\, headaches\, mood changes\, restlessness\, difficulty staying focused\, or balance and coordination issues\n\nLearn more about Irlen Syndrome. This webinar will benefit all K-12 teachers and staff working with children\, special educators\, higher ed\, school counselors and psychologists\, and occupational therapists. \n  \nHelen Irlen is the Founder and Executive Director of the Irlen Institute. SUMMARY:52 Ways to Boost Young Children’s Brain Development
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Jill Stamm\, Ph.D.\, Co-founder of New Directions Institute for Infant Brain Development\nSponsored by Gryphon House \nWATCH THE WEBINAR RECORDING\nWithin 24 hours after the live event\, a CE certificate is emailed to live attendees who logged in online with their email address. To get your CE certificate for logging in live by phone\, or for watching the recording\, join the Early Learning Book Chats community and go to the Webinar Archives folder to take the CE quiz. As a member of the community\, you’ll also have access to additional resources and online discussions. \nFacts and reports about how a young child’s brain actually develops have been available for over 15 years and yet it has remained difficult to transfer science-based information to the people who need it the most: caregivers of young children. One of the barriers has been that few translators have found easy-to-understand\, short\, yet accurate ways to explain clear messages from neuroscience to early care providers. \nAll forms of learning involve changes in the brain. The input from a child’s daily environment\, especially the people in his/her life\, directly affects how the intricate connections in the brain are wired. By working with and caring for a child in deliberate ways\, an adult can influence the way a child’s mind grows. Responsive\, attentive care allows the brain to develop in a healthy way. The central brain structures critical for learning and memory form early and are resistant\, but not impossible\, to change. \nLearning objectives included: \n\nDiscover how paying attention to the sequence and timing of how young brains wire up can guide the activities and experiences a caregiver should provide\nRealize how varying levels of stress cause different reactions in the brain\nBecome aware of how many skills depend on pattern recognition\nBe able to explain how play is linked biologically to motivation and learning\nLearn effective arguments to explain the wisdom of the early childhood return on investment\n\n  \nDr. Jill Stamm\, cofounder of New Directions Institute for Infant Brain Development (a program of Arizona’s Children Association) and an emeritus associate clinical professor at Arizona State University\, is the author of the new book\, Boosting Brain Power: 52 Ways to Use What Science Tells Us. Her recent book\, Bright from the Start: The Simple\, Science-Backed Way to Nurture Your Child’s Developing Mind from Birth to Age 3\, has received excellent reviews from both caregivers and scientists alike. She is frequently quoted in child development articles\, and has appeared many times on television\, radio and website interviews. She served on the Governor’s Advisory Council for Science\, Technology\, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)\, and is an advisor for the series of Learning and the Brain Conferences. \nDr. Stamm is also the creator of Brain Boxes®\, a unique patented set of early learning tools. She has two adult daughters\, Kristin a neuroscientist\, and Jenny\, born prematurely with physical and developmental disabilities\, but who has flourished with her mother’s understanding of her unique brain functioning. \nWATCH THE WEBINAR RECORDING\n  \nGryphon House\, Inc. is an award-winning publisher of early childhood resources for teachers and parents.

To get your CE certificate for logging in live by phone\, or for watching the recording\, join the Lessons of Personal Bravery and Self-Sacrifice community and go to the Webinar Archives folder to take the CE quiz. As a member of the community\, you’ll also have access to additional resources and online discussions. \nMedal of Honor Recipient Hiroshi “Hershey” Miyamura told his personal story during this special webinar presented by the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation (CMOHF). Mr. Miyamura recounted his heroic actions and his internment as a Prisoner Of War during the Korean War. \nHiroshi H. Miyamura enlisted in the US Army in 1945 as a young Japanese American during World War II. He volunteered to be part of the all-Nisei 100th Infantry Battalion\, a unit made up of mostly second-generation Japanese Americans from Hawaii and the mainland. Shipping out to Europe just as that war ended\, he would not see combat until his unit was called to active duty in North Korea. \nMiyamura’s harrowing story began on April 24\, 1951\, as Chinese troops moved quickly into his unit’s defensive position. As the command for retreat came\, Miyamura maintained the position with a machine gun while he covered his unit’s withdrawal. Trying to make it back to safety\, he killed 10 Chinese soldiers using grenades and hand-to-hand combat. It was then that he was captured and forced to walk with his compatriots on a long\, arduous trek through the bitter cold to the POW camp where he would spend the next 28 tortuous months. For his actions\, Hershey was awarded the Medal of Honor but it was classified as Top Secret. Hershey was finally presented the Medal of Honor on October 27\, 1953 by Dwight D. Eisenhower at the White House upon his return to the United States. \nDuring this webinar\, Mr. Miyamura discussed what the Medal of Honor means to him and how it has affected his life\, adding his unique perspective on the values celebrated by the CMOHF Character Development Program. Ron Rand\, President and CEO\, Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation\, moderated the program. \n  \nHiroshi “Hershey” Miyamura was born on October 6\, 1925 in Gallup\, New Mexico\, to Japanese immigrant parents. In January 1945\, he volunteered to be part of the Nisei 100th Infantry Battalion. \nMiyamura was formally presented his Medal of Honor by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in a White House ceremony on October 27\, 1953 for his actions on April 24-25\, 1951\, near the Imjin River in North Korea. His Medal of Honor citation reads\, “Cpl. Miyamura’s indomitable heroism and consummate devotion to duty reflect the utmost glory on himself and uphold the illustrious traditions on the military service.” Read more here. \nAfter an honorable discharge from the service\, he worked as an automobile mechanic and owned a service station\, though he now devotes some free time to fishing. Miyamura also remains very active in supporting fellow veterans\, including working with the Wounded Warrior Project and visiting local schools. \n  \nRon Rand\, President and CEO\, Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation \nA retired U.S. Air Force brigadier general\, Ron Rand has more than 40 years of leadership and corporate communications experience in positions of increasing responsibility\, including most recently as a senior vice president at Lockheed Martin Corporation. Rand also brings a strong track record of developing leadership potential in others and executing complex outreach programs and events. \n  \n  \nWATCH THE WEBINAR RECORDING\nThe Medal of Honor Character Development Program is a free resource that teaches character through stories of the Medal of Honor recipients. The CDP is a cross-curriculum supplement and complies with National/State Common Core standards. The Medal of Honor Character Development Program incorporates the ideals of courage and selfless service into the middle and high school curriculum to build character and promote responsible citizenship.  The program is FREE and includes 50+ lesson plans supported by over 100 video vignettes of the Medal of Honor Recipients themselves\, as well as videos of hometown heroes selected by the Medal of Honor Recipients as “Citizen Heroes.”
