In this webinar\, these methods were explained and evaluated by how well and how safely they meet the need for instant lockdown security\, while still offering simplicity and speed of use\, accessibility to First Responders\, and operational longevity and reliability that all schools require during normal everyday use. \nSchools are special areas of public assembly that are often difficult to instantly secure in an emergency\, while still maintaining an intrinsically safe and code compliant environment for the building occupants. Understanding how different hardware elements must work together is critical to achieving a safe and secure environment for students\, staff and visitors alike. David Akins and Mark J. Berger\, both with Securitech Group\, Inc.\, removed the mystery surrounding the correct uses of special locking devices and also help you better assess security and life safety conditions in your school and college facility. \nTopics included: \n\n How to recognize and identify the problems presented by different types of door openings in schools.\nHow to use the recommendations of the Homeland Security Primer to Design Safe School Projects to assess their security plans.\nHow to apply the relevance of CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environment Design) principles.\n\nSchool administrators\, district superintendents\, teachers\, facility managers\, security directors\, and building architects will benefit from this webinar. \nDave Akins is the Director of Product Management for Securitech. His background in the door and hardware industry spans over four decades.  In that time\, he has worked as a locksmith\, lock manufacturer\, special-locking product developer\, national sales manager. He is a specialized door hardware consultant.  Dave is active in the New York metro area for the Red Cross\, and he is the District Emergency Coordinator for Nassau County ARES and the president of ARCECS radio. He also is active in Nassau County OEM/RACES emergency radio communications. \n  \n  \nMark Berger is the President of Securitech\, and serves as Chair of the Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association Codes Committee. SUMMARY:Harness the Power of Music to Enhance Learning
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Ellen Acuna and Alex Farkas\, Music Together In-School Services Mentors\nSponsored by Music Together \nWATCH THE WEBINAR RECORDING\nWithin 24 hours after the live event\, a CE certificate is emailed to live attendees who logged in online with their email address. To get your CE certificate for logging in live by phone\, or for watching the recording\, join the Arts & Music in Early Learning community and go to the Webinar Archives folder to take the CE quiz. As a member of the community\, you’ll also have access to additional resources and online discussions. \nMusic can be an incredible and enjoyable tool to use with children of all ages. However\, many early childhood professionals don’t realize that the means to do this are very accessible for any educator regardless of music talent or experience. In this lively webinar\, experience how easy it is to create a musically rich environment that promotes a positive learning atmosphere\, engaging children and enhancing the classroom environment. Learn how simple music activities can support children’s focus\, approaches toward learning\, transitions\, classroom management\, and the daily routine in early learning settings. \n  \nEllen Acuna has eighteen years of experience as an early childhood music and movement specialist working with children birth through age five and their parents and caregivers in a developmentally appropriate and research-based music and movement program. She has a B.A. from West Chester State College (now West Chester University) where she studied Speech Communications. In addition to being a Music Together In-School teaching mentor for other music and movement specialists\, she presents professional development workshops for music specialists and classroom teachers and has presented at national conferences. \n  \nAlexandra Farkas\, M.A.T.\, has many years of experience as an early childhood music and movement specialist\, and holds a New Jersey State Teacher certification for K-12 Music. Alex has served as the general music teacher at a K-8 school and as a private voice teacher. She currently enjoys her work as a Mentor for the In-School Services Department at Music Together\, LLC\, as well as a teacher of Music Together in both school settings and family classes. Alex is a graduate of Westminster Choir College of Rider University where she earned her Bachelor of Music in Music Education and her Master of Arts in Teaching. She is also an active performer and musician and has performed at Carnegie Hall and Avery Fisher Hall under the batons of such distinguished conductors as Pierre Boulez\, Kurt Masur\, Lorin Maazel\, and many others. \n  \nWATCH THE WEBINAR RECORDING\n  \nAt Music Together\, we understand the importance of music in early childhood—from birth\, in fact. Because the truth is\, most people are born with enough music aptitude to play in a symphony orchestra when they are adults\, if they choose. But first we must learn how to “speak music”—to take the musical instrument we all have\, ourselves\, developing that musical capacity from a very young age. The sounds we make\, our movements\, our rhythms—these are the building blocks of music and of early childhood learning. And that’s what Music Together is all about.

SUMMARY:Cuddling\, Consciousness\, and Cognition: The Significance of Emotional Engagement on Development and Learning
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Keith L. Pentz\, National Early Childhood Specialist\, Kaplan Early Learning Company\nSponsored by Kaplan Early Learning Company \nWATCH THE WEBINAR RECORDING\nWithin 24 hours after the live event\, a CE certificate is emailed to live attendees who logged in online with their email address. To get your CE certificate for logging in live by phone\, or for watching the recording\, join the Classroom Management for Early Learning community and go to the Webinar Archives folder to take the CE quiz. As a member of the community\, you’ll also have access to additional resources and online discussions. \nEmotional engagement that stems from loving and caring interactions\, the creation of relationships\, and a stimulating environment has a direct and significant impact on a young child’s development and learning. The shaping of a mind and how the child will respond to life events is forever guided by the touches\, gazes\, caresses\, cuddling\, language\, songs\, and playful experiences during the first years of life. \nThis session is designed to provide an examination of the biopsychosocial perspective on development of very young children—primarily from birth until two years of age. Historically\, we moved from one-dimensional behavioral and genetic explanations of development and learning through the nature-nurture debates. With the advent of more research as it relates to epigenetics\, attachment\, the impact of trauma and violence\, and brain/cognitive processing abilities\, we now have a broader perspective on which to design and develop programs and practices that truly meet the needs of an infant and the very young child. \nSpecific practices—be they gazes\, touches\, interactions\, etc.—have been shown to provide exceptional responses and promote development and learning\, particularly when demonstrated in a loving\, nurturing\, and caring environment. The emotional component of any program and practice is a critical factor when engaging the very young. A developing brain and mind (consciousness) are significantly impacted by the presence or absence of love and nurture. The society of tomorrow is being held in our arms today! \n  \nKeith L. Pentz\, National Early Childhood Specialist for Kaplan Early Learning Company\, has been in the field of education for more than 35 years. Keith began his career by working in childcare with infants and toddlers\, taught elementary students as well as Kindergarten\, and then taught Pre-Kindergarten. Following his experiences in the classroom\, Keith moved on to teach at the University of Central Florida in Orlando\, Florida\, and he also was an Assistant Professor of Early Childhood Education at Gordon College in Wenham\, Massachusetts\, before beginning his career as a consultant. \n  \n \nWATCH THE WEBINAR RECORDING \n  \nKaplan Early Learning Company is a leading international provider of products and services that enhance children’s learning.

SUMMARY:The Best Kept Secret in Learning: Executive Function
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dr. Bruce Wexler\, Professor of Psychiatry at Yale University\nSponsored by C8 Sciences \nWATCH THE WEBINAR RECORDING\nWithin 24 hours after the live event\, a CE certificate is emailed to live attendees who logged in online with their email address. To get your CE certificate for logging in live by phone\, or for watching the recording\, join The Brain and Learning community and go to the Webinar Archives folder to take the CE quiz. As a member of the community\, you’ll also have access to additional resources and online discussions. \nWhenever we as educators want to increase learning\, we’ve traditionally looked at the instructional materials we provide our students or\, often\, at the quality of the instruction itself. But focusing on these things overlooks the most important factor in learning –the learner. \nSo what’s the real secret to effectively reaching the learner? It is Executive Function. \nExecutive Function has been described as being like the air traffic controller of the brain. Executive Function includes the mental processes that are keys to learning and helping us to do things like remembering instructions\, sustaining attention\, and managing multiple tasks. Children with weak Executive Function skills usually struggle in school. \nIn this webinar\, Dr. Bruce Wexler\, Professor of Psychiatry at Yale University\, explored the science behind Executive Function and how brain training can be used to strengthen these skills. He was joined by educators from Carlisle (PA) Area School District who shared their strategies for focusing on Executive Function to increase learning. \nLearn about Executive Function. This webinar will benefit anyone involved with curriculum – curriculum directors\, principals\, teachers – as well as administrators of direct intervention services (including RTI) and special education services. \n  \nBruce E. Wexler\, M.D. is professor emeritus of psychiatry and senior research scientist at Yale School of Medicine and director of the Neurocognitive Research Laboratory at the Connecticut Mental Health Center. In 35 years of neuroscience research he has advanced the understanding of brain plasticity and been an international leader in developing computer-presented brain exercises to treat cognitive deficits in people with psychiatric illnesses. His patent-pending innovations led to the development of the ACTIVATE™ cognition cross-training program for children and adults. Dr. Wexler graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University\, studied psychiatry at Anna Freud’s Hampstead Clinic and Neurology at the Institute of Neurology\, Queen’s Square\, London. He received his Doctor of Medicine from Albert Einstein College of Medicine and training in psychiatry at Yale. He has received multiple highly prestigious research grants from the National Institute of Health\, National Science Foundation and private foundations\, including a Career Scientist Award and a grant for “paradigm changing medical research” from the Director of the NIH. Professor Wexler has published more than 100 scientific papers and articles. His book\, Brain and Culture: Neurobiology\, Ideology\, and Social Change (MIT Press)\, has received international attention. Dr. Wexler has given invited and keynote lectures throughout North America as well as in South America\, Europe and Asia. He was the 2013 recipient of the Kempf Award from the American Psychiatric Association for outstanding research and mentoring. \n  \nWATCH THE WEBINAR RECORDING\n  \n C8 Sciences develops a neuroscience-based cognition assessment and development products that have the potential to solve some of the most significant problems in childhood education and in our ageing population.  C8 Sciences is the only company to offer integrated computer and physical exercises – “cognition cross-training.”  Our products are based on proprietary research developed at Yale University by Dr. Bruce Wexler\, and our technology is so impressive that Dr. Wexler and Yale were awarded a prestigious $4M Director’s Office Grant by the National Institutes of Health to study the use of ACTIVATE™ (formerly known as C8Kids) for treating ADHD\, a grant reserved only for research programs that have the potential for a paradigm change in US healthcare.

SUMMARY:Connecting Young Children and Nature: How to Educate and Enchant
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dr. Ruth Wilson\, Professor Emerita\, Bowling Green State University\nSponsored by Gryphon House \nWATCH THE WEBINAR RECORDING\nWithin 24 hours after the live event\, a CE certificate is emailed to live attendees who logged in online with their email address. To get your CE certificate for logging in live by phone\, or for watching the recording\, join the Early Learning Book Chats community and go to the Webinar Archives folder to take the CE quiz. As a member of the community\, you’ll also have access to additional resources and online discussions. \nThis presentation focused on the idea that young children need frequent positive experiences with nature for their holistic development and for becoming environmentally literate individuals. Discover the understanding that connecting young children with nature should be about fostering a sense of wonder rather than on the teaching of facts. Yet\, the ideas introduced demonstrate how different academic areas — including science\, math\, literacy\, and the arts – can be promoted through developmentally appropriate nature-related activities. Ideas were also offered on how to use nature to support the social and emotional development of young children and how connections with nature promote such desired dispositions as empathy\, caring\, and curiosity. Learn how strengthening the connections between children and nature can contribute to a more peaceful and sustainable world. \nThe primary objectives of this presentation are for teachers to: \n\nBecome more aware of the many benefits of connecting children with nature\nDevelop an understanding of how nature can be used as an integrating context for learning\nDevelop an appreciation of the role of wonder or enchantment in the lives of young children\nBecome familiar with a variety of nature-related activities which can be used with young children to promote both education and enchantment\n\n  \nDr. Ruth Wilson worked for over 30 years as an educator and now devotes her time to writing and consulting. The focus of her work is on connecting young children with nature. She’s written several books on this topic including Nature and Young Children published by Routledge and\, most recently\, Learning is in Bloom published by Gryphon House. \nRuth’s consulting projects have included work with Sesame Street\, California’s Education and Environment Initiative\, Schlitz Audubon Nature Center in Milwaukee\, and Brookfield Zoo near Chicago. Several years ago\, she was honored with a lifetime achievement award by the National Arbor Day Foundation for her work in early childhood environmental education.
