SUMMARY:Rural Districts Taking the Digital Leap
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Ned Kirsch\, Superintendent\, Franklin West Supervisory Union\, VT; Dr. Mary Wegner\, Superintendent\, Sitka School District\, AK; and Dr. Suzanne Lacey\, Superintendent\, Talladega County Schools\, AL\nProgram Host and Moderator: Ann McMullan\, Project Director\, CoSN Empowered Superintendents Program\nSponsored by ClassLink\nThis edWebinar series is co-hosted by CoSN and edWeb.net \nWatch the Recording\nGet a CE Certificate for this edWebinar Learn more \nMore than half of school districts and about one third of public schools in the United States are in rural areas. Rural districts have unique challenges when it comes to leveraging technology for learning\, ranging from poverty and vast travel distances to a lack of affordable internet access. \nWhile leading teaching and learning in rural school districts comes with some very specific challenges\, opportunities also exist at the same time. Rural districts have unique opportunities due to their smaller size. They can be nimbler and school leaders often have more ownership of the schools. Rural districts often have strong community involvement. Teacher retention is strong. Many times\, teachers teach in the same town—or even in the same schools—where they themselves were once students. \nIn this edWebinar three rural school district superintendents examine the challenges and opportunities that are unique to rural school districts when moving forward with technology tools—both for learning and for running a school district. Real-world strategies are shared along with an overview of resources available to support the work of school leaders in rural school districts. \nThis recorded session is of special value for school superintendents\, K-12 school and district leaders\, and aspiring leaders. \nAbout the Presenters \nNed Kirsch was the superintendent of schools of Franklin West Supervisory Union (FWSU) serving the Vermont towns of Georgia\, Fairfax and Fletcher. It feels as though parents and educators are swimming against a rising tide of negative energy\, searching for hope and the tools to empower ourselves and the children in our lives to make a positive impact on the world. Service is one simple answer: a way to spread positivity and kindness\, to foster compassion\, empathy\, open-mindedness and generosity in developing children. \nThis is not just wishful thinking; volunteering is not just a nice thing to do. Research has shown that engaging in community service in childhood and\, more specifically\, volunteering as a family\, has a meaningful\, long-term impact on kids. Natalie Silverstein’s work as a volunteer coordinator and passionate advocate for family service inspired her to write Simple Acts: The Busy Family’s Guide to Giving Back. Teaching young children to be socially conscious\, community-oriented\, and eager to volunteer seems like a daunting task\, especially in the midst of so many competing priorities. Simple Acts brings parents and educators practical\, easy-to-do ideas to involve the whole family in volunteering and helping others in the community. \nIn this edWebinar\, Natalie reviews: \n\nThe proven value of service in raising compassionate children\nHow to choose community service options\nIdeas for integrating volunteering and service into already-busy schedules\nWays to help children experience the deep satisfaction of helping others\n\nThis recorded edWebinar will be of interest to preK-8 teachers\, librarians\, school and district leaders\, and after-school coordinators. \n  \nAbout the Presenter \nNatalie Silverstein\, MPH is an author and the New York coordinator of Doing Good Together. SUMMARY:Digital Collection Development
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Michelle Luhtala\, Library Department Chair\, New Canaan High School\, CT; and Mesa Heise\, Director of Digital Services\, Mackin Educational Resources \nSponsored by Mackin Educational Resources \nWatch the Recording\nGet a CE Certificate for this edWebinar Learn more \nPurchasing digital educational content is tricky business. The big trade publishers can change licensing agreements in ways that impact schools because K-12 is not their priority market. Textbook publishing\, which seemed simple and profitable in the print format is far more complex for eTexts. The term “eBook” calls to mind an alphabet soup of delivery formats (EPUB\, MOBI\, AZW\, IBA\, PDF\, and more). Purchasing as we have traditionally known it is replaced by a wide array of “leasing” models where a dropped contract can result in collection depletion. Managing a digital collection requires attention to detail. The screen reading vs. print reading debate rages on. \nIn the meantime\, software developers scramble to innovate e-reading for education with varying degrees of success. A decade ago\, the eBook market was labeled as the wild west of publishing\, and while much has changed\, volatility has not. In this edWebinar\, watch Michelle Luhtala\, Library Department Chair at New Canaan High School in Connecticut\, and Mesa Heise\, Director of Digital Services at Mackin Educational Resources\, for a discussion about effective digital collection development in K-12 schools. \nThis recorded presentation will be of interest to K-12 librarians\, teachers\, and administrators. \nAbout the Presenters \nMichelle Luhtala is the Library Department Chair at New Canaan High School in Connecticut and was one of five school librarians named as a “Mover and Shaker” by Library Journal in 2015. She is the winner of the 2011 “I Love My Librarian” Award and the Library Association’s 2010 Outstanding Librarian Award. The New Canaan High School Library won AASL’s National School Library Program of the year in 2010. Follow her on Twitter @mluhtala. \n  \nMesa Heise\, Mackin’s Director of Digital Services\, brings a wealth of experience to the company and the customers it serves. Her expert infusion into this family-owned business is evidenced by the deep knowledge and dedicated passion she shares every day with school administrators\, librarians\, media specialists and teachers. An experienced and vivacious presence\, Mesa serves as Mackin’s chief public speaker. Throughout the year\, she travels the country\, attending national and local conferences\, educating the public on the virtues of Mackin and their multiple award-winning\, free digital resource management system\, MackinVIA. Her contributions to Mackin go beyond public education. Mesa has been instrumental in the design of the user interface and functionality of MackinVIA and the eBook reader. It is through her persistent efforts and tireless energy that Mackin has remained at the forefront of the print and digital realm within PK- 12 education. \nJoin the Emerging Tech for Schools and Libraries community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming edWebinars\, and view recordings of previous programs to earn CE certificates. \n\n Mackin is one of the top providers of library and classroom materials for grades PK-12.
