SUMMARY:Art as a Persuasive Language
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Cheri Sterman\, Crayola Education Director\, and Melissa Hayes\, Art Education Specialist\, Acton\, MA\nSponsored by Crayola \nWATCH THE WEBINAR RECORDING\nIf you attended the live session\, you’ll be emailed a CE certificate within 24 hours of the webinar. If you view the recording and would like a CE certificate\, join the Champion Creativity community and go to the Webinar Archives folder to take the CE quiz. \nArt conveys meaning. Human brains are wired to notice and respond to visual stimuli. Whether we are aware of it or not\, everything we see influences our thinking\, feeling\, and ultimately the decisions we make. Art is a very persuasive language that can be used to influence behaviors and attitudes. In fact\, advertising uses art/text to influence us and our students. Helping students analyze the reasons behind an ad and how it is trying to influence them is a critical thinking experience that helps them be better decision-makers. In this webinar\, Crayola Education Director Cheri Sterman and Art Education Specialist Melissa Hayes explain how to use art-integration as a teaching strategy that aligns with subjects across the curriculum. This approach encourages students to explore historical and societal contexts and understand the power of crisp word messages that accompany images they “read” as they decode advertising’s intent\, intended audience\, and voice. \nLearning outcomes of this webinar include: \n• Practical ideas on how to teach the literacy skill of reading art to understand how visuals convey meaning\n• A rhetorical composition framework (intent\, intended audience\, voice\, and genre) that helps students compose and decode art and writing\n• An understanding of how we are persuaded by images and use these insights to help students reach their own conclusions and become better decision-makers \nThis recorded webinar will benefit K-8 classroom teachers\, art teachers\, literacy specialists and librarians\, principals\, and early childhood educators and family engagement specialists. \nSpecial Invitation: As special recognition\, the educators who share a piece of artwork that they or their students created based on the power of art to persuade others will receive a complimentary gift from Crayola. Fifty members of the Champion Creativity community who upload the art to the discussion forum\, “Art as a Persuasive Language\,” will receive 24 boxes of 6 ct. Crayola Glitter Markers. The discussion forum is only accessible to members of the Champion Creativity community and the deadline to upload an example of art that was created in a parent meeting is April 3\, 2017. While we’d love to see your art wherever you live\, shipping this gift is only applicable for members in the U.S. and Canada. \nAbout the Presenters\nCheri Sterman\, Director of Education for Crayola\, helps ignite educators’ creative confidence and establish creative collaborations within schools and communities. She leverages insights from having worked with educators across the country\, hearing their passion for innovative teaching strategies that awaken students’ voices. Her approach is to ask essential questions\, spark personal epiphanies through hands-on experiences that make thinking visible\, and provide reflective prompts. Cheri knows that the best solutions live within educators\, and so coaches them in planning their own next steps. Cheri uses an iterative process that helps educators create\, present\, respond\, and connect—making their voices visible. She authored the Art Builds 21st Century Learning series available on Crayola.com and articles in the annual Champion Creatively Alive Children: Principal magazine\, helping schools build creative capacity and engage families in this process. \nMelissa Hayes is an extraordinary art educator—as proclaimed by her colleagues\, who recently elected her as President of the Massachusetts Art Education Association\, and by her elementary students\, who adore her! She’s been teaching K-6 art at Luther Conant Elementary School for the past 13 years\, with a deep passion for building students’ visual literacy and critical thinking skills. Her classes rely on studio techniques\, discussion\, and student reflections to spark innovative thinking and inquiry. She urges students to question themselves and others as they make meaning from artistic experiences. Melissa has presented professional development sessions within her district and at numerous state and national conferences. In 2015 her school was awarded a Champion Creatively Alive Children grant from Crayola. \n  \nJoin the Champion Creativity community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming webinars\, view past webinars\, take a quiz to receive a CE certificate for a past webinar\, and access free resources. \nWATCH THE WEBINAR RECORDING\n \n  \nArt-infused education builds 21st Century skills. SUMMARY:Renegade Leadership: A Simple Framework for Meaningful Change
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dr. Brad Gustafson\, Principal\, Greenwood Elementary School\, MN\nSponsored by NAESP \nWATCH THE WEBINAR RECORDING\nIf you attended the live session\, you’ll be emailed a CE certificate within 24 hours of the webinar. The first years in the principalship can be some of the most exciting and difficult years in education.  It’s imperative that new school leaders focus on what really matters during these foundational leadership years. Innovation is something that really matters\, but it can be lost in the frenetic pace and steep learning curve of the principalship…until now. This virtual book talk provides a surprisingly simple framework for applying innovation to the great work already being done in schools. This is NOT a discussion about change for the sake of change. Renegade Leadership promises to empower principals with the tools and how-to support to create meaningful change in their schools. \nAbout the Presenter \nDr. Brad Gustafson\, Principal of Greenwood Elementary School\, is Minnesota’s 2016 National Distinguished Principal and a 2015 Digital Innovation in Learning Award (DILA) winner. His school was awarded a 2015 Local Government Innovation (LGI) Award from the University of Minnesota’s Humphrey School of Public Affairs.  He earned his Doctoral degree at Bethel University where his research focused on innovation and professional development.  Brad co-hosts the “UnearthED” program on the Bam Radio Network.  His blog\, Adjusting Course\, has been named a “Must Read” K-12 blog by EdTech magazine the past couple years\, and was also recognized with an Editor’s Choice Content Award by Smartbrief Education.  In addition to blogging\, Brad recently co-authored Renegade Leadership: Creating Innovative Schools for Digital-Age Students.  You can connect with him on Twitter @GustafsonBrad or find more information on his blog at www.BradGustafson.com \nJoin the NAESP Virtual Book Talks for Early Career School Principals community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming webinars\, view past webinars\, take a quiz to receive a CE certificate for a past webinar\, and access free resources. \nWATCH THE WEBINAR RECORDING\nThe National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP)\, founded in 1921\, is a professional organization serving elementary and middle school principals and other education leaders throughout the United States\, Canada\, and overseas.

Not all are “A” students. Some perform exceedingly well in a single curriculum area but appear to be average in others. Some gifted students establish a perplexing pattern of doing well or doing nothing. Some are reluctant\, even resistant\, learners refusing to play the school game. \nIn this webinar Dr. Diane Heacox\, Ed.D. explores well-documented research on underlying causes of low performance and create distinctions between non-producers\, selective producers\, and underachievers among the gifted populations. Teachers often struggle to reach students who actively or passively resist engagement in learning. This session identifies behaviors that distinguish students who are having motivational issues. Dr. Heacox considers which behaviors are necessary for success in the classroom and how to remove barriers to learning\, giving students more opportunities for autonomy. Viewers will be guided through a process for diagnosing specific performance issues and Dr. Heacox will suggest specific and targeted courses of action. \nThis recorded webinar will benefit elementary and secondary classroom teachers\, gifted education resource teachers\, facilitators\, coordinators\, curriculum instruction assessment leaders\, counselors\, AP\, IB\, accelerated or honors course teachers\, gifted education cluster teachers\, principals\, and school leaders. \nAbout the Presenter \nDr. Diane Heacox is a national and international consultant and professional development trainer focusing on strategies to increase learning success for all students. SUMMARY:Teachers’ Skills in the Digital Age and Personalized PD for Teachers
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Lynn Gershman\, Educator\, 2gnō.me\nSponsored by 2gnō.me \nWe’re sorry but the recording for this edWebinar is no longer available. \nThis webinar is about re-imagining professional development for teachers. In most districts\, PD is based on a one-size-fits-all model of teaching without differentiation\, little teacher input\, and little choice. Basically\, it is the opposite of how we try to teach students and is the most ineffective way to teach anyone\, let alone adults. \nLynn Gershman\, Educator-in-Residence at 2gnō.me\, presents on what makes a successful PD process and the roadblocks to planning such a process\, and share examples of overcoming these roadblocks with awareness and personalization. This recorded webinar will be of particular interest to teachers\, administrators\, district leadership\, instructional technologists\, and PD providers. \nAbout the Presenter \nLynn Gershman has spent 15 years in the secondary classroom honing her practice and working to influence change on a larger scale. Her objective is to reform education in the U.S. through the use of technology. She believes that technology alone will not change the face of education\, but when teachers are willing to examine and augment their practice with technology\, it will revolutionize the way teachers teach and the way students learn. \n  \n  \nJoin the New Models for Professional Learning community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming webinars\, view past webinars\, take a quiz to receive a CE certificate for a past webinar\, and access free resources. \nWith 2gnō.me (“to know me”)\, teachers and school administrators get soft skills intelligence about critical classroom competencies such as collaboration\, content knowledge\, communication\, risk-taking and many more. This unique approach establishes a baseline of skill strengths and gaps\, enhances self-awareness\, and helps address skill gaps with tailored professional development to every teacher—at scale\, with data to back it up. 2gnō.me received the Gold Award at the 2016 Re-Imagine Education competition.

Fake media is a hot topic in\, ahem\, the media. But it is also a hot topic in education. In November 2016\, the Stanford History Education Group (SHEG) published Evaluating Information: The Cornerstone of Civic Online Reasoning\, a study that revealed concerning results. Because students increasingly turn to online news to meet their research needs\, it is more important than ever for educators to help them separate truth from fiction. In this session\, USA Today Reporter Greg Toppo joins Michelle Luhtala\, Library Department Chair\, New Canaan High School\, CT\, to discuss shifting trends in the news business and what teachers can do to help their learners sift through the information pool to find trustworthy journalism. \nThis webinar is part of a two-part series:\nMedia Literacy: A Crash Course in 60 Minutes\nTeaching Digital Literacy. \n \n  \nMichelle Luhtala is the Library Department Chair at New Canaan High School in Connecticut and was one of five school librarians named as a “Mover and Shaker” by Library Journal in 2015. The paper’s series prompted the Washington\, D.C.\, inspector general to investigate high erasure rates in D.C. schools. Toppo was a 2010 Spencer fellow at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism and is the author of the book The Game Believes In You: How Digital Play Can Make Our Kids Smarter (April 2015). His first job was with the Santa Fe New Mexican\, a 50\,000-circulation daily. You want them to seek out challenges\, ask for help\, resist distractions\, and see mistakes as chances to try again. In other words\, you want kids to be self-regulated learners. Self-regulation for learning (SRL) is the ability to effectively balance affect (how you feel)\, behaviors (what you do)\, and cognition (how you think) to pursue worthy academic goals. Teaching students to balance these three elements builds motivation\, resilience\, and college and career readiness. \nIn this webinar\, Dr. Richard Cash\, Ed.D. discusses doable\, evidence-based practices to help students engage in learning\, build confidence\, set and manage goals\, develop habits of thinking\, do effective home study\, and reflect on their learning. Dr. Cash will share real stories of students who achieved success through SRL skills; he’ll also provide a framework for both classroom practices and school-wide implementation. Discover how schools have used this whole-child approach to assisting students in gaining greater social/emotional well-being\, developing scholarly behaviors\, and acquiring valuable thinking tools to be successful in school and beyond. \nThis recorded webinar will benefit K-12 teachers\, counselors\, administrators\, social workers\, and special and gifted education professionals. \nAbout the Presenter \nDr. Richard M.
