If you view the recording and would like a CE certificate\, join the Using Technology for Language Instruction community and go to the edWebinar Archives folder to take the CE quiz. \nPreetom Bhattacharya from the Huntington Beach City School District\, CA\, presents the value of language-learning programs during out-of-school time. Limited time and resources during the school day reduce access to language learning that develops skills students need to engage in a global society. Educators can develop or expand after-school programs to increase students’ access to language learning. \nOur students are already part of the most globally interconnected population in human history. When students graduate\, they should be equipped with the skills to communicate and collaborate cross-culturally. K-12 language programs can help foster a generation prepared to enter the global society\, while also allowing students to reap the cognitive and academic benefits that result from language learning. \nLearning another language can help develop students’ cognitive skills\, resulting in higher achievement in other academic areas\, and help increase their standardized test scores. Bilingualism can improve students’ mental flexibility and working memories\, and give them the ability to grasp abstract concepts better than their monolingual peers. Additionally\, increasing proficiency with a new language has been shown to improve student proficiency in their primary language. \nAfter-school\, before-school\, and summer programs provide the perfect enriched learning opportunity to offer students access to language learning\, while also complementing the teaching and learning that takes place during the school day. \nWatch this edWebinar to learn: \n\nWhy using this time to implement language learning makes sense\nHow to implement an out-of-school language-learning program\nEffective strategies to increase student engagement\n\nWith well-planned access to language programs\, today’s students can become tomorrow’s world leaders\, functioning well across languages and cultures as successful members of a global society. K-12 educators are invited to watch to learn how to implement an after-school language-learning program that is fun and engaging for both students and staff. \nAbout the Presenter \nPreetom Bhattacharya serves as the coordinator of English Learners\, Title I\, and Special Programs and Services in the Huntington Beach City School District\, CA where he assists the district in compliance regulations related to state and federal accountability\, in addition to facilitating the development of the district’s Local Control Accountability Plan. SUMMARY:Preventing the Summer Slide with Audiobooks
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Mary Ann Scheuer\, Teacher Librarian for Berkeley USD\, CA\nSponsored by Tales2go \nWatch the Recording\nListen to the Podcast \nIf you attended the live session\, you’ll be emailed a CE certificate within 24 hours of the edWebinar. If you view the recording and would like a CE certificate\, join the Audio-Based Learning and Collaboration community and go to the edWebinar Archives folder to take the CE quiz. \nListening to professionally narrated audiobooks is a great way to prevent the “summer slide.” Children in low-income households fall behind an average of two months in reading during the summer. Summer learning loss accounts for two-thirds of the ninth grade achievement gap in reading between students from low-income households and their higher-income peers. \nIn this edWebinar\, Mary Ann Scheuer\, Teacher Librarian at Berkeley USD\, CA\, presents research findings from a 2016 study looking at the effect of adding a listening component to literacy instruction—in school and at home. She also specifically addresses its impact on student vocabulary\, reading comprehension and motivation to read. The study also found that students listening to audiobooks without paired text attained 58% of their annual reading gain in just ten weeks\, putting them three months ahead of the control students. Mary Ann discusses these and other key findings of the research. \nBeyond the merits of the study\, Mary Ann shares the benefits\, excitement and engagement of students listening to high-interest audiobooks at or above their current reading level that she has experienced first-hand. With new digital technologies\, it’s never been easier to support students on a year-round remote basis. \nThis recorded session is designed for PreK-12 librarians as well as reading coaches\, ELL specialists/teachers\, Title I teachers and administrators\, district librarians\, and classroom teachers. \nAbout the Presenter \nMary Ann Scheuer has 20 years’ experience in California schools\, as an English teacher and a librarian. She has served as an elementary teacher librarian in Berkeley USD since 2013\, creating a new role in this district. As an English teacher\, Mary Ann wrote a school-wide grant to fund audiobooks and regularly used these in her teaching. Now as a librarian\, she has led the way providing streaming access to audiobooks for all elementary students across her school district. She is currently doing action-research to determine the impact of audiobooks on struggling readers. Mary Ann regularly reviews books at her blog\, Great Kid Books. She also contributes to School Library Journal\, Kirkus Reviews and the Association of Children’s Librarians of Northern California. SUMMARY:Discovery Learning for Infants and Toddlers: Treasure Basket Explorations
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Laura Wilhelm\, Ed.D.\, Associate Professor\, Early Childhood Education\, Oklahoma City University\nSponsored by Gryphon House \nWatch the Recording\nIf you attend the live session\, you’ll be emailed a CE certificate within 24 hours of the edWebinar. If you view the recording and would like a CE certificate\, join the Early Learning Book Chats community and go to the edWebinar Archives folder to take the CE quiz. \nPeople who work with older children may view infants and toddlers in terms of what they cannot do yet. Treasure baskets are a supplement to regularly planned curriculum activities that showcase the amazing capabilities of children between 6 and 36 months. These baskets employ heuristic learning which presents opportunities for the child to discover through five (and more) senses. “Heuristic\,” a new term for many of us\, comes from the same root as “eureka\,” which emphasizes discovery learning. These activities highlight how much longer very young children will attend to something when they are intrigued by it. \nIn this edWebinar\, Dr. Laura Wilhelm shares: \n\nHow and why to design treasure baskets with everyday household and natural objects at little or no cost\nWhy plastic mass-manufactured toys are less appealing with their similar temperature and textures\, bright colors\, and sometimes overpowering lights and sounds\nTeachers’ ideas about the best ways to incorporate heuristic activities within existing curriculum for 6- to 36-month-old children\n\nChildcare providers\, directors\, home visitors\, and mentors who work with infants and toddlers will benefit from this edWebinar. Whether you are a new or veteran childcare provider\, you will walk away from this session ready to become an expert at an individual child’s interests and abilities! \n\nAbout the Presenter \nDr. Laura Wilhelm is an associate professor at Oklahoma City University. SUMMARY:Emotional Intelligence in ELA and Social Studies: Integrating Social-Emotional Learning into the Curriculum in Ways that Satisfy State Standards
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Jonathan C. Erwin\, M.A.\, Independent Educational Consultant\, Senior Faculty Member of the William Glasser Institute\, and Instructor for the Bureau of Education and Research\nSponsored by Free Spirit Publishing \nWatch the Recording\nIf you attended the live session\, you’ll be emailed a CE certificate within 24 hours of the edWebinar. If you view the recording and would like a CE certificate\, join the Social-Emotional Learning\, Positive Behavior\, and Student Achievement community and go to the edWebinar Archives folder to take the CE quiz. \nNearly every educator can think of a student who has the intellectual ability to succeed in school but fails or falls behind because of a lack of social-emotional skills. These students may not be able to focus\, listen\, control impulses\, self-motivate\, or self-regulate\, which naturally prevents them from learning and performing to their full potential. However\, students become totally engaged when they are learning about their favorite subject—themselves. And one of the greatest benefits of integrating social-emotional learning (SEL) with ELA and social studies is that it is student-centered. \nIn this edWebinar\, Jonathan Erwin\, M.A.\, provides a research-based rationale for teaching SEL\, shares lessons that teach specific SEL skills\, and shows how you can use SEL content to satisfy state standards. Leverage Erwin’s 30-plus years in education to learn how SEL can be an excellent vehicle for satisfying the requirements of your state’s ELA standards in addition to improving students’ attitudes and behaviors. This webinar will benefit ELA and social studies teachers grades 3-12\, counselors\, social workers\, and youth empowerment leaders. \nAbout the Presenter \nJonathan C. Erwin\, M.A.\, has been a middle and high school English teacher\, professional development specialist\, college professor\, and director of a federally funded character education program.
