SUMMARY:The Power of Music: Create a Positive and Focused Learning Environment through Music
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Alex Farkas\, M.A.T.\, In-School Services Curriculum Mentor\, Music Together Worldwide\nSponsored by Music Together \nWatch the Recording\nIf you attended the live session\, you’ll be emailed a CE certificate within 24 hours of the edWebinar. If you view the recording and would like a CE certificate\, join the Music in Early Learning community and go to the edWebinar Archives folder to take the CE quiz.. \nMusic can be an incredible and enjoyable tool to use with children of all ages. However\, many early childhood professionals don’t realize that the means to do this are very accessible for any educator regardless of music “talent” or experience. In this edWebinar\, Alexandra Farkas\, Music Together In-School Services Mentor\, explores how simple music activities can support children’s focus\, approaches toward learning\, transitions\, classroom management\, and the daily routine in early learning settings. Learn how easy it is to create a musically rich environment that promotes a positive learning atmosphere\, engages children of all ages\, enhances the classroom environment\, and is enjoyable for both children and adults. This recorded edWebinar will benefit educators working with toddlers\, preschoolers\, and kindergarteners. \nAbout the Presenter \nAlexandra Farkas\, M.A.T.\, has many years of experience as an early childhood music and movement specialist\, and holds a New Jersey State Teacher certification for K-12 Music. Alex has served as the general music teacher at a K-8 school and as a private voice teacher. Because the truth is\, most people are born with enough music aptitude to play in a symphony orchestra when they are adults\, if they choose. But first we must learn how to “speak music”—to take the musical instrument we all have\, ourselves\, developing that musical capacity from a very young age. The sounds we make\, our movements\, our rhythms—these are the building blocks of music and of early childhood learning. And that’s what Music Together is all about.

SUMMARY:How Games Can Be a Centerpiece for Student-Driven Learning
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Matthew Farber\, Ed.D.\, Social Studies Teacher and Game-Based Learning Author; with Steve Isaacs\, Video Game Design and Development Teacher\nHosted by Common Sense Education and Sponsored by Symantec \nWatch the Recording\nIf you attended the live session\, you’ll be emailed a CE certificate within 24 hours of the edWebinar. If you view the recording and would like a CE certificate\, join the Digital Learning & Leadership community and go to the edWebinar Archives folder to take the CE quiz. \nIf—for the most part—phonics workbooks were abandoned in favor of whole-language approaches to reading\, why are educational games still honing in on single concepts? Educational technology is often viewed as a tool to support learning\, not the focal point of instruction. But games can be different. Games can be the centerpiece of a classroom. Much like studying a novel or analyzing a film\, the systems in games can drive instruction around and about it. \nIn this edWebinar\, Matthew Farber\, Ed.D.\, social studies teacher and game-based learning author; and Steve Isaacs\, video game design and development teacher\, discuss how games can create a shared experience for students\, much like a field trip. In their game-based learning classrooms\, students study games and then have an opportunity to mod (modify\, change) as well as to design their own. In this session\, Matthew and Steve: \n\nReview concrete examples of games across the curriculum\, from humanities to STEM\nShare free game-design tools and assessment strategies\nHighlight student choice and voice\n\nEducators and librarians working across all content areas in grades 5 to 12 are encouraged watch to this recorded session. Learn how to move your students from content consumers to media creators!\n\nAbout the Presenters \nMatthew Farber\, Ed.D.\, teaches social studies at Valleyview Middle School in Denville\, New Jersey. He holds a doctorate in educational technology leadership from New Jersey City University\, where he is an adjunct instructor. He is also a part-time lecturer at Rutgers University. A student excels during small-group guided reading time\, yet as soon as they are asked to read independently\, all of their progress seems to fly out the window. It’s tempting to equate reading success with successful guided reading practice. In fact\, many of us forget that students need help navigating the transition to solo independent reading. \nIn Part 3 of this three-part series\, Author Jill Eggleton details the final secret ingredient necessary for creating the perfect balanced reading burger. You might know it as “reciprocal teaching\,” but we call it peer reading. Peer reading bridges the gap between small-group guided reading time to literacy success by allowing students to first work cooperatively with their peers to read and comprehend a text\, independent of the teacher. \nJill dives deeper into peer reading and describes: \n\nWhat peer reading is and why it works\nThe fundamental differences between solo independent reading and peer reading (group of students reading independent of the teacher)\nThe four critical parts of a successful peer reading session\nAnd much more\n\nK-5 classroom teachers\, reading specialists\, literacy coaches\, administrators\, and librarians as well as K-12 district-level elementary curriculum and instruction directors/coordinators\, elementary reading directors/coordinators\, and elementary remedial reading directors/coordinators are invited to watch this recorded session. \nThis webinar is part of the Balanced Literacy Series:\nBalanced Literacy Part 1: A Revised Recipe for Literacy Success\nBalanced Literacy Part 2: A Revised Recipe for Guided Reading\nBalanced Literacy Part 3: The Secret Ingredient in the Recipe for Literacy Success \nAbout the Presenter \nJill Eggleton is an international educational consultant in literacy with a wide variety of teaching experience spanning 30 years. If you view the recording and would like a CE certificate\, join the Using Technology for Language Instruction community and go to the edWebinar Archives folder to take the CE quiz. \nPreetom Bhattacharya from the Huntington Beach City School District\, CA\, presents the value of language-learning programs during out-of-school time. Limited time and resources during the school day reduce access to language learning that develops skills students need to engage in a global society. Educators can develop or expand after-school programs to increase students’ access to language learning. \nOur students are already part of the most globally interconnected population in human history. When students graduate\, they should be equipped with the skills to communicate and collaborate cross-culturally. K-12 language programs can help foster a generation prepared to enter the global society\, while also allowing students to reap the cognitive and academic benefits that result from language learning. \nLearning another language can help develop students’ cognitive skills\, resulting in higher achievement in other academic areas\, and help increase their standardized test scores. Bilingualism can improve students’ mental flexibility and working memories\, and give them the ability to grasp abstract concepts better than their monolingual peers. Additionally\, increasing proficiency with a new language has been shown to improve student proficiency in their primary language. \nAfter-school\, before-school\, and summer programs provide the perfect enriched learning opportunity to offer students access to language learning\, while also complementing the teaching and learning that takes place during the school day. \nWatch this edWebinar to learn: \n\nWhy using this time to implement language learning makes sense\nHow to implement an out-of-school language-learning program\nEffective strategies to increase student engagement\n\nWith well-planned access to language programs\, today’s students can become tomorrow’s world leaders\, functioning well across languages and cultures as successful members of a global society. K-12 educators are invited to watch to learn how to implement an after-school language-learning program that is fun and engaging for both students and staff. \nAbout the Presenter \nPreetom Bhattacharya serves as the coordinator of English Learners\, Title I\, and Special Programs and Services in the Huntington Beach City School District\, CA where he assists the district in compliance regulations related to state and federal accountability\, in addition to facilitating the development of the district’s Local Control Accountability Plan.
