Traditional models of direct instruction were designed to teach a particular skill\, transferred top to bottom from teacher to student. Today\, the role of education has changed. Instead of preparing for specific careers\, it is vital to focus on making sure students are future ready. To do so\, many schools and districts are now integrating STEM and coding into their programs. But\, two key questions remain for many educators: “where to start?” and “how to bring STEM and coding into the curriculum without taking away time from other core subjects?” \nIn this edWebinar\, Dr. Azadeh Jamalian\, Head of Education Strategy at littleBits\, discusses best practices for bringing hands-on coding and STEAM into your school and review guidelines on coding to learn math\, science\, literacy\, art\, and music. Pilot and case studies examining STEM implementation in elementary and middle schools are reviewed\, and important takeaways applicable for different educational settings will be highlighted. \nTech and curriculum directors\, principals\, librarians\, and teachers for grades three to eight will benefit from watching this recorded session. SUMMARY:Support Preschoolers' Executive Function Skills with Music
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dr. Lili M. Levinowitz\, Director of Research\, Music Together Worldwide\, and Professor Emeritus\, Rowan University\nSponsored by Music Together \nWatch the Recording\n If you view the recording and would like a CE certificate\, join the Music in Early Learning community and go to the CE Quizzes link in the Community Toolbox. \nExecutive functions are some of the most important mental skills we need in order to get things done throughout our lives. Executive function skills help us control our impulses\, filter distractions\, plan and prioritize tasks\, and remember instructions. We are not born with these skills\, but every child has the potential to develop them\, beginning in early childhood. \nIn this edWebinar\, Dr. Lili M. Levinowitz\, Director of Research at Music Together Worldwide and Professor Emeritus at Rowan University\, explores the many ways in which developmentally appropriate\, participatory\, and enjoyable music and movement activities can naturally support young children’s development of important executive function skills\, including attention control\, working memory\, cognitive flexibility\, and inhibitory control. \nEducators working with toddlers\, preschoolers\, and kindergartners will benefit from watching this recorded session. Gain a deeper understanding of the importance of executive functions and how to support the development of these skills in early childhood through specific musical interactions that are fun for both children and adults. \nAbout the Presenter \nLili M. Levinowitz\, Ph.D.\, is Professor Emeritus of Music Education at Rowan University. She is the coauthor of the early childhood music and movement program\, Music Together\, and Director of Research for Music Together Worldwide. Dr. Levinowitz is considered a national authority on early childhood music and is actively involved in teaching very young children as well as graduate students. Her articles appear frequently in professional journals and popular magazines. She received her M.M. and Ph.D. from Temple University\, and her B.M. from Westminster Choir College. \n  \nJoin the Music in Early Learning community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming edWebinars\, view past edWebinars\, take a quiz to receive a CE certificate for a past edWebinar\, and access free resources. \n  \n At Music Together\, we understand the importance of music in early childhood—from birth\, in fact. Because the truth is\, most people are born with enough music aptitude to play in a symphony orchestra when they are adults\, if they choose. But first we must learn how to “speak music”—to take the musical instrument we all have\, ourselves\, developing that musical capacity from a very young age. The sounds we make\, our movements\, our rhythms—these are the building blocks of music and of early childhood learning. And that’s what Music Together is all about.
