SUMMARY:Feedback Loops with Teachers and Children: The Parallel Process in Action
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Mary-Margaret Gardiner\, CLASS Specialist; and Mamie Morrow\, CLASS Specialist\nSponsored by Teachstone \nWatch the Recording\nIf you view the recording and would like a CE certificate\, join the PD in Action community and go to the CE Quizzes link in the Community Toolbox. \nWe know that the interactions between teachers and children are critical in helping children learn and feel comfortable and confident in the classroom. These same interactions are important in other relationships you have like the relationships coaches have with teachers. \nHigh-quality feedback loops are a valuable source of “fuel” for encouraging children to engage with thinking and learning. There are many opportunities for teachers to provide feedback in the classroom. In this edWebinar\, Mary-Margaret Gardiner and Mamie Morrow\, CLASS Specialists for Teachstone\, provide concrete examples and strategies for how teachers can provide children with the kinds of experiences that will: \n\nFuel their passions\nHelp them engage at a deeper level\nEncourage them to be persistent when challenged\nKeep them coming back for more learning and inquiry\n\nFeedback doesn’t have to end in the classroom. Mary-Margaret and Mamie also highlight how feedback loops are important for administrators and coaches to provide to teachers. Hear about strategies that can be used to support teachers by scaffolding them with hints and assistance\, prompting them to think deeper\, providing good information\, and encouraging them to expand their learning. This model is called parallel process. Parallel process means engaging in the same interaction strategies we want teachers to use in classrooms with children\, only this time\, between adults. Instead of teacher-child interactions\, parallel process is about adult-adult interactions. \nThis recorded session is designed for Pre-K through Grade 3 teachers\, coaches\, and administrators. However\, those working with older students are also invited to attend. Learn how to put the parallel process into action. \nAbout the Presenters\nMary-Margaret Gardiner is a CLASS Specialist for Teachstone. She has been in the early childhood community for over 35 years\, driven by her passion to support the teachers who work with our most valuable asset\, our children. She joined Teachstone in 2010 and has been a CLASS convert since the early days before Teachstone was even started! \n  \n  \n  \n\nSince 2013\, Mamie has enjoyed her work at Teachstone as a CLASS Specialist enriching coaching and instructional skills. Her diverse background as an early childhood and elementary teacher in schools around the world helps her form meaningful connections with educators across the nation. Having worked with children in New Mexico\, Germany\, Guam\, Alaska\, Japan\, Washington DC and Florida\, she appreciates the powerful impact effective interactions have on children. \n  \n  \nJoin the PD in Action community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming edWebinars\, view past edWebinars\, take a quiz to receive a CE certificate for a past edWebinar\, and access free resources. \nAs the trusted leader in CLASS-driven measurement and professional development\, Teachstone has the proven expertise schools need to nurture better academic and social-emotional outcomes\, one classroom at a time. SUMMARY:View Beneath Their Feet: Thinking Critically About Classroom Rugs
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dr. Sandra Duncan\, Classroom Design Expert\nSponsored by Kaplan Early Learning \nWatch the Recording\nIf you view the recording and would like a CE certificate\, join the Classroom Management for Early Learning community and go to the CE Quizzes link in the Community Toolbox. \nThere are times when it is important to watch the view beneath your feet such as when walking on a muddy trail\, rocky pathway\, uneven sidewalk\, or bumpy walkway. We are careful when traversing down steep stairs\, climbing up and down a tall step ladder\, or getting in and out of a wobbly canoe. When unfamiliar with the landscape or unsure of our footing\, we watch our step because we don’t want to trip\, stumble\, or—worst case scenario—fall. What’s below our feet tells us how to act and move. An uneven walking surface sends a message to slow down and mind our step\, or\, when coming down a steep hill\, our brains send a message to our bodies to walk with care and our eyes help us to find the best way down. The view beneath our feet informs us how to navigate and move about the space. Likewise\, the view beneath children’s feet sends important messages about how to move about the classroom environment. \nWatch Classroom Design Expert Dr. Sandra Duncan in this edWebinar to learn how area rugs play a critical role in defining spaces and helping children navigate the classroom. DESCRIPTION:Presented by Jan Bryan\, Ed.D.\, National Education Officer\, Renaissance\nSponsored by Renaissance \nWatch the Recording\nIf you view the recording and would like a CE certificate\, join the ELA Today community and go to the CE Quizzes link in the Community Toolbox. \nWhat’s the difference between (a) students who start and end the school year as struggling readers\, and (b) students who start out struggling but end up succeeding? \nResearch suggests one key factor is an increase in deliberate reading practice—in some cases\, as little as six additional minutes per day. This deliberate practice affects everything from the structure of students’ brains to vocabulary acquisition to future opportunities for job advancement. Or\, as educator and author Mike Schmoker puts it\, “reading changes everything.” \nIn this research-driven edWebinar Jan Bryan\, Ed.D.\, National Education Officer at Renaissance\, presents essential insights into how the right reading practice will lead to substantial gains in student growth. Topics include: \n\nThe impact of reading on the brain—and the power of deliberate practice\nVocabulary acquisition and concept development across grade levels\nEffective strategies for making time in the school day for more reading practice\nProven drivers of student reading growth you can implement in your district\n\nThis recorded presentation will benefit K12 educators and librarians as well as building\, district\, and curriculum leaders including reading and literacy specialists. Learn more about the benefits of deliberate reading practice for student growth. \nAbout the Presenter \nJan Bryan\, Ed.D. is Vice President and National Education Officer at Renaissance. SUMMARY:Character Education: Interview with Medal of Honor Recipient Gordon R. Roberts (Vietnam)
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation\nSponsored by the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation \nWatch the Recording\nListen to the Podcast \nIf you view the recording and would like a CE certificate\, join the The Medal of Honor Character Development Program community and go to the edWebinar Archives folder to take the CE quiz. \nPlan for your class to watch the on-demand recording with Medal of Honor Recipient Gordon R. Roberts. Sgt. Roberts distinguished himself while serving as a rifleman in Vietnam. Roberts’ platoon was maneuvering along a ridge to attack enemy bunkers which had pinned down an adjoining friendly company. As they approached\, they were attacked by heavy automatic weapons and grenade fire. Seeing his platoon immobilized\, Sgt. Roberts crawled rapidly toward the closest enemy bunker and charged it\, fighting through a heavy hail of fire to join the friendly company. Although continually exposed to hostile fire\, Sgt. Roberts assisted in moving wounded personnel from exposed positions to an evacuation area before returning to his unit. \nThis edWebinar\, presented by the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation\, is an inspiring learning opportunity for middle and high school students to connect directly with an American hero. Interviews with Medal of Honor Recipients are part of the Medal of Honor Character Development Program\, a free program that helps students build character and promotes responsible citizenship through a deeper understanding of stories of courage and sacrifice. Before watching the recorded edWebinar\, we encourage teachers to review Roberts’ story with their class. \nMedal of Honor Recipient Gordon R. Roberts Citation\n\nFor conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty. Sgt. Roberts distinguished himself while serving as a rifleman in Company B\, during combat operations. Sgt. Roberts’ platoon was maneuvering along a ridge to attack heavily fortified enemy bunker positions which had pinned down an adjoining friendly company. As the platoon approached the enemy positions\, it was suddenly pinned down by heavy automatic weapons and grenade fire from camouflaged enemy fortifications atop the overlooking hill. Seeing his platoon immobilized and in danger of failing in its mission\, Sgt. Roberts crawled rapidly toward the closest enemy bunker. \nWith complete disregard for his safety\, he leaped to his feet and charged the bunker\, firing as he ran. Despite the intense enemy fire directed at him\, Sgt. Roberts silenced the 2-man bunker. Without hesitation\, Sgt. Roberts continued his l-man assault on a second bunker. As he neared the second bunker\, a burst of enemy fire knocked his rifle from his hands. Sgt. Roberts picked up a rifle dropped by a comrade and continued his assault\, silencing the bunker. He continued his charge against a third bunker and destroyed it with well-thrown hand grenades. \nAlthough Sgt. Roberts was now cut off from his platoon\, he continued his assault against a fourth enemy emplacement. He fought through a heavy hail of fire to join elements of the adjoining company which had been pinned down by the enemy fire. Although continually exposed to hostile fire\, he assisted in moving wounded personnel from exposed positions on the hilltop to an evacuation area before returning to his unit. By his gallant and selfless actions\, Sgt. Roberts contributed directly to saving the lives of his comrades and served as an inspiration to his fellow soldiers in the defeat of the enemy force. Sgt. Roberts’ extraordinary heroism in action at the risk of his life were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself\, his unit\, and the U.S. Army. \nHost and Interviewer \nCathy Ehlers Metcalf joined the Medal of Honor Character Development Program as Vice President of Education in 2015 after serving as a Regional Curriculum Trainer. Cathy taught college-level writing for over 33 years in Southern California. Cathy’s father was a World War II Medal of Honor Recipient. Those experiences gave Cathy a great respect for both the Medal of Honor and a passion for service to our Nation’s Veterans. \n  \n  \nJoin The Medal of Honor Character Development Program community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming edWebinars\, view past edWebinars\, take a quiz to receive a CE certificate for a past edWebinar\, and access free resources. \n  \nThe Medal of Honor Character Development Program is a free resource that teaches character through stories of the Medal of Honor recipients. The CDP is a cross-curriculum supplement and complies with National/State Common Core standards. The Medal of Honor Character Development Program incorporates the ideals of courage and selfless service into the middle and high school curriculum to build character and promote responsible citizenship.  The program is FREE and includes 50+ lesson plans supported by over 100 video vignettes of the Medal of Honor Recipients themselves\, as well as videos of hometown heroes selected by the Medal of Honor Recipients as “Citizen Heroes.” \n \n \n \nListen to the Podcast\nWe’re happy to make podcasts available for selected panel discussions and interviews.\nIf you would like a CE certificate for this presentation\, watch the edWebinar recording and take the CE quiz. \nDownload here

SUMMARY:Fraction Challenges for Your Classroom and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Zachary Wissner-Gross\, PhD\, Product Manager\, Amplify Education\nSponsored by Amplify Fractions \nWatch the Recording\nIf you attend the live session\, you’ll be emailed a CE certificate within 24 hours of the webinar. If you view the recording and would like a CE certificate\, join the Adaptive Math Learning community and go to the edWebinar Archives folder to take the CE quiz. \nWhile standards relating to fractions typically conclude by fifth or sixth grade\, fractions themselves continue to show up everywhere in more advanced mathematics. In this edWebinar\, Zachary Wissner-Gross\, PhD\, Product Manager at Amplify Education\, will explore a variety of more advanced fractions-related concepts that make for great lessons in middle school\, high school\, or beyond. \nWe’ll begin by thinking through some alternatives to fractions. After all\, fractions are really just a convention we’ve settled on for writing and thinking about rational numbers—there’s more than one way to describe values between whole numbers. (It will become apparent why some of these ways aren’t as popular as fractions!) \nFrom there\, we’ll visualize fractional operations from addition through exponentiation\, prove that certain numbers are irrational\, sum geometric series of fractions\, and explore the dimensionality of fractals. You are guaranteed to see fractions in at least one new and exciting way to bring back to your classroom. \nThis session will benefit middle school math teachers as well as upper elementary educators looking for a fractions challenge. There will be time to get your questions answered after the presentation. \nSpecial Invitation: All edWebinar participants are invited to try Amplify Fractions for free through June 30\, 2018.
